Most of the rooms are in the Meierhof building, while the castle has only a handful of suites. The rooms in Meierhof are quite small and spartan. I had a single room with a small window. It reminded me of my stay years ago in a dorm at Oxford University. The room lacked even a kettle to boil water for tea or coffee. The breakfast, which is served in the castle, is good, though.

Where to start?? First of all, the setting of the hotel complex is rather pleasant and the business is cashing in on the association with ‘The Sound of Music’. The rooms within the palace must be of a better standard than those located in the ‘Meierhof’ building where I had the misfortune of staying for one night. The block gives off prison block vibes, old tatty carpets, battered walls and little to no decoration, giving it very stark and unwelcoming vibes. When I checked into my room I discovered that the floors were absolutely filthy with one particular area in front of the bed standing out with hairs and dirt stuck to the floor. I immediately reported this to the person behind the reception desk who was mildly disinterested and sent someone up to let me deal with this by myself. A cleaner and building maintenance person turned up and couldn’t really see the problem (the extremely low standards of cleanliness and upkeep of the building are evident everywhere) and the cleaner proceeded to quickly mop the floor from the bed out of the room and then said ‘ok??’. At this point I just needed to get on with my day but when I returned to my room later that night I inspected everything a bit closer and found the entire floor absolutely filthy with accumulated dirt and smears everywhere. The bathroom floor was particularly disgusting. I put my shoes on to move around the room. The room furnishings were in acceptable condition bar the stained and marked walls and torn curtains. The next morning after I took a shower I used to bath mat to give the floor a quick mop with my foot after I got dressed and was not astounded to find the mat absolutely stained with filth and dirt. I went for breakfast in the adjacent palace which was great. Very nice setting and great service but this did not make up for the condition of the room. Upon checkout I spoke to a different receptionist and showed them the photos I took. They were very apologetic and went to speak to the manager who was within sight with their back turned to us but would not come out to deal with the situation themselves but let the receptionist take the flack. I was offered a 25euro discount on the 175euro room rate which I accepted as I wasn’t looking for a freebie but I can safely say that I will never ever be back.

We visited Salzburg and had to stay at this hotel for a few nights as my wife is a huge fan of the "Sound of Music" movie. The grounds, view and buildings are beautiful and we had a great time. We went in September and I would note to people that the room did NOT have air conditioning. However, the temperature was ok during that time but just something to consider. The breakfast buffet was wonderful and was in the Schloss Leopoldskron beside the hotel building (the rooms are in a different building). The service was excellent at the hotel and the views are amazing. They have bicycles you can borrow for a ride around the lake or across to see other areas, so definitely check that out. The hotel is not near much, so if you plan on eating or visiting Salzburg, you'll need transportation. We had a rental car and found parking garages in the city during our trip. Would recommend to other fans as you need to be a guest to explore the grounds.

This is a stunning Castle in a beautiful situation. Guests stay in an abbey next door where the rooms are modern, clean and comfortable. The highlight of the stay is the breakfast set in one of the Castles glorious rooms. The atmosphere is so unique and I can truly say the best indoor breakfast location we’ve ever experienced. The breakfast buffet was of the highest quality and a sheer joy to partake in.

We stayed in the Marlene Dietrich suite and it was incredible. Beautifully furnished with incredible view. We had complimentary fruit, sparkling wine, Christmas cookies. Bed and pillows were comfortable, linens crisp. It was farther from attractions, but we walked everywhere. Breakfast is not to be missed. It’s a lovely hotel.

We had a fantastic experience at Schloss Leopoldskron. We chose to stay there because of the link with the Sound of Music. We were not disappointed! We stayed in one of the townhouses in the Meierhof Building. The townhouse was elegant and provided lots of room to spread out, with a combination dining room/living room, a foyer area, 1/2 bath and a fully furnished kitchen downstairs. Upstairs were two good-sized bedrooms and a full bathroom. Breakfast was included and was served over in the castle - the building that served as the set for all of the outside scenes shot along the lake for the Sound of Music. Though the villa could use some attention, it was beautiful! You could clearly see the inspiration it also provided for some of the interior sets created for SoM. There is also a small cafe near the reception, but it’s pretty basic. Ok for snacks and we had a delightful bottle of Chardonnay there our last night at the Schloss. The staff at the reception desk were consistently super helpful and friendly. Also at breakfast - the woman who seemed to be the head of staff at breakfast got to know us and went out of her way to be gracious each morning. All in all, we had an outstanding experience and would absolutely return!

We had a fabulous stay at the Schloss. It is a great place to stay and not just because it was a filming location for The Sound of Music (although that was pretty cool too!). We stayed in the Meierhof building next to the Schloss (i.e. not actually staying in the Schloss) but trust me when I say this was absolutely fine. The rooms were pleasant and the staff service was great. The overall atmosphere is peaceful, calm and beautiful. The views of the mountain and lake are epic. A great part of this hotel is that this area is for customers only - i.e. not open to the public, so there are few people around. Breakfast in the Schloss is included and was incredible. The buffet was delicious, the interior exquisite and luxurious and the views were stunning. You can also explore some of the Schloss interior which was beautiful. Such a great stay, would love to come back and highly recommend!

We came by Uber at 1 PM, Sept 13. The room was ready and staff was polite. The room not as good as I expected, room dark could have used a few brighter lights but you are here for the atmosphere, the palace and scenery. Comfortable beds, large new clean shower should have safety rail and mat to prevent falls. Remember no AC. You are a bit far from the old town. We were able to walk ~25 minutes. We took a sound of music tour from Bobs tours on a small minivan and felt special when they made a stop by the palace across the lake not allowed on the grounds. Wow! Breakfast was awesome in the palace. Eggs, bacon, cheeses danish, yum. Very Very good breakfast service. You are allowed to roam the grounds and palace while you stay here. You feel like a bit of royalty while staying here.

What a dump. I have stayed in a wide variety of places in my life from a tent in the military to a hostel to the JW. This place reminds me of a low end dorm. That wouldn’t bother me so much if I wasn’t paying the rate I normally would pay for a very nice 4 star hotel. I can overlook no air conditioning, since they are kind enough to give us a fan. But the smell, the dirty looking shared ironing board in the hallway, no food anywhere except for a leftover wrap and a couple cucumber sandwiches, two very flat pillows on our platform bed that is squeezed into our tiny room, etc. Again, I’ve traveled to Europe multiple times, and I am accustomed to these types of accommodations, but NOT for this price or star rating. We called to see if we could check out after one night instead of staying here two nights, but they won’t let us so we are trapped here. So, take my advice- DON’T stay here unless you want to set yourself up for major disappointment.

This was a ludicrous stay. On our one night here, there was a party that went on until 3 in the morning (3am). We weren’t informed this would be taking place when we booked and reception was completely dismissive when we inquired about what was going on and whether there could be any effort to address it. It began early in the evening. We figured it would knockoff around 10pm maybe. Nope. On and on and on. And you wanted to leave our window open in the evening since it gets too warm in the room if it’s closed because of the lack of climate control. They were blasting music and yelling out behind the building until very late. No one did anything to get people inside or manage the noise. Just preposterous. What a terrible stay and inconsiderate establishment.

Response from Carina Kammel, General Manager at Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron
Responded Sep 25, 2023
Dear Andreas, as I was already replying to your wife, I would like to respond to your review, as well. During your stay, we had the pleasure of witnessing a world premiere on the occasion of Max Reinhardt's 150th birthday. Max Reinhardt was a theater and film director and former owner of our Schloss Leopoldskron. Under the direction of a well-known theater and movie director, some performances, such as "Jedermann" or "Die Fledermaus" were staged in our Schloss Leopoldskron. It was a great celebration of which we are very proud of and there will be more such high-profile events to follow. Nevertheless, I would like to formally apologize for not informing you about our event, when you arrived and thus disturbing your night's rest. For that reason, we have given you an immediate contribution and we hope with that we were able to convey a sign of recognition. I apologize for any inconveniences this experience has caused but we hope to get another chance to show you a different side of our Schloss Leopoldskron experience. Please feel free to contact me directly for any further information. With kindest regards, Carina Kammel General Manager, Hospitality
