Travelers' Choice
The Altstadthotel Wolf in the Heart of Salzburg The oldest parts of the building date back to around 1429, the first documentary mention of this town house. After a wide variety of owners, the building came into the possession of the current owner's family in 1899, when Erentraut Rottensteiner's grandparents bought the house for 24.000.- Gulden. The hotel started out as an inn and tavern, and has since been continually restored and modernized, while always carefully maintaining the historical fabric of the heritage-listed building. A lift and modern bathrooms were added, and each room individually and comfortably furnished to create a very special atmosphere to make you feel at home.

This was my first visit to the Altstadhotel Wolf, and I hope it will not be the last. In the past, I have stayed at another historic hotel in Salzburg, which although lovely, has always been very noisy, as the location is near the Getreidegasse. One of the things I liked most about this hotel was that it is incredibly well situated in the old town, and close to the Mozartplatz, but just a tiny bit further from the main action so that it is very quiet. Saltzburg's old town is small, and very walkable, and one can easily transverse it in probably less than 20 minutes, if you don't stop to gaze into the many gorgeous store windows admiring the beautiful clothing, antiques, books, and decorated eggs. When I arrived in the early afternoon, I was greeted by a lovely member of staff, who told me that my room had been upgraded. I was given the key to room number 38, and took the small elevator up to the third floor. No. 38 is a nicely sized double room overlooking the back garden. My favorite piece of furniture was the colorfully decorated armoir, which gave the room a distinctly Austrian feel. It seemed like everything in the room had been carefully planned, and I especially enjoyed the small sofa, which was perfect for reading in the evening. The bathroom was also well equipped, and I could not have been more comfortable. A very generous buffet breakfast was laid on tables covered with linen tablecloths. Each plate looked like a work of art. The young lady who supervised the dining room could not have been nicer. I took a table by the window, and could see the horse drawn carriages drive by as I ate my delicious breakfast. I also enjoyed the napkin rings that sported a small wooden carving of a wolf. The value for the accomodation was great, and I look forward to staying here again.

We stayed here for a couple of nights and really enjoyed the experience. Martin took exceptional care of us and when we decided to treat ourselves to a quiet cheese and wine dinner one evening he made sure that we were comfortable and even put on music. The staff is friendly and courteous and helpful and the place is clean and very well located and of course, comfortable.
