Bonheur is one of the oldest guesthouses in Valletta dating back to 1946. It is an elegant Maltese house of character boasting many beautiful features - traditional Maltese balconies, sea views, thick walls and original flooring. This friendly family owned guesthouse is flanked by Hastings Gardens and is situated in the historic city centre. It's only 5 minutes' walk from Valletta's beautiful historic buildings, museums, restaurants, shopping centre and national bus terminus.
What a great find! Amazing location and Rose Marie and her husband were so incredibly kind and helpful. There's a shower and sink in the room, never had any issues with waiting for the shared toilet. Every morning they made a breakfast of cereals, toast, eggs, coffee and juice. Bed was comfortable with nice soft bedding. Amazing location, no more than a 5 minute walk to the heart of Valletta. An incredible value, highly encourage you to book here!!

This must be the nastiest hotel/guesthouse in Valletta, if not Malta. The room was grubby and cramped, and there was a smell of drains and mould. A puddle of water in the communal toilet, which I reported, was not cleaned up until the end of my stay. Breakfast was unappetising, with the worst coffee I've ever tasted. The proprietor constantly chased for payment, with a clear preference for cash. An awful experience. Never again!

Dear Dr_Caligari, We thank you for taking the time to write a review, it is greatly appreciated. For fairness sake we would like to point out that you had booked with us for one week and paid a deposit for the first three nights. We are baffled, if the situation was as bad as you say, how come you didn't leave after the first three nights but instead extended your stay to 14 nights! As you very well aware we have a daily cleaner that does whatever needs to be done, sheets and towels are changed regularly. We offer an extended continental breakfast and you were in a room with a new shower and balcony to the front. It is very sad that the fact that we could not offer you more than a 10% discount on cash payment on our 40 Euro a day price (price includes VAT, Free WiFi, Free heater and breakfast) triggered all this anger. Kind regards, Rosa & George

This is really a wonderful accomodation in a cozy Maltese house. It is near a garden where you have a great view on the old town. The room is large and confortable. A good breakfast is served in a characteristic hall. Absolutely recommended

It gives us great pleasure to read that you enjoyed staying with us because George and I always strive to make our guests feel comfortable and at home. I stayed 7 nights during December and enjoyed the guesthouse’s ambience, quiet surroundings, and safe neighborhood. It’s an old noble’s house with high ceilings and antique-style decor. Rosa and George are kind people who enjoy hosting and offering travel advice It is conveniently located within walking distance to many attractions and the bus station. Also, I took a shuttle from the airport to nearby Osborne Hotel for only 5 Euros. Prior to arrival, I had difficulty with the room deposit from my home area, however we worked out sending the money to Valletta's Western Union office where Rosa could pick up cash. These old buildings are more accomodating for summer weather, so It was cold at night with only one portable heater although extra blankets provided warmth. My one improvement suggestion is shower grab bars because it was slippery getting in and out.…

Dear Punihele808, George and I really appreciate your comments about your stay with us at our guesthouse. We really love what we are doing and when our guests are such lovely people as you are, it helps to make our job even more pleasant and interesting. I thank you for your suggestion to add shower grab bars. We already have three rooms with them installed, I didn't know that you had a problem because I would have changed your room immediately. However, George bought some more and now all the rooms have grab bars. We are very happy that you found our location very convenient to your needs and hope to have the pleasure of hosting you again some other time in the near future, until then we send you our warmest wishes and thanks for taking the trouble of reviewing your stay with us. Kind regards, Rosa & George

Excellent location in Valletta very close to the Cathedral, museums and the ferries to both the Three Cities and Silema. The hosts Rosa and George were very friendly and full of helpful advice which made our stay much more relaxing as we felt able to ask a lot of questions without feeling we were being a nuisance. Our room was spacious and the beds very comfortable. It's "old fashioned" in a very pleasant way and excellent value for money. If you seek corporate blandness this isn't for you. If you would like a more traditional Maltese experience then you would enjoy staying here.

Dear Ms Trevella, I thank you for taking the time to share your experience; it was such a pleasure to read that you have enjoyed your stay with us as we always try to do our best to make everyone feel comfortable and relaxed in our house. Nobody is ever a nuisance when asking questions about our beautiful Malta because many times we guide but at other times we learn from our guests about interesting places that we didn’t even know existed. Again I thank you for your recommendation and I look forward to welcoming you and your husband again in Malta and at the Bonheur some other time in the future. Best Regards Rosa & George

Bonheur Guesthouse was the cheapest B&B type accommodations I found in the Valletta area. You get what you pay for. Location was very good. The furniture seemed to be adequate flea market stuff. The rooms are large, high ceilings, with a shower and a basin clearly ad hoc. My beds, I stayed in two different rooms, were springy–no problem for me, no backache resulting. There wasn’t a heating/AC unit for the rooms, but the temperature seemed to be a steady 70-72 F/21 C during my Oct/Nov stays. WiFi/Internet service very good. While the bar/dinning room and common spaces have some nice decorative touches, the walls, ceilings, and floors the Bonheur are tired. Best rooms with balcony are on the street side, but they are also the furthest from the shared toilet (with no basin). Noise not an issue. Rose and George are pleasant hosts. Rose was passionate about the journalist who had recently been murdered. They are dutiful to feed the cats and usually manage to keep them out of the house. Yes, I recommend the place.…

Dear Bill E, I thank you for taking the time to review our guesthouse and to recommend us. It is greatly appreciated. Just for fairness sake I would like to point out that even though we do not have any ACs, we supply free of charge, fans in summer and heaters in winter. As regards to no basins in the common toilets, you are right we will address this as soon as possible. We didn’t think about it before as each room has its own basin. The guesthouse is situated in an old Maltese house of character and it needs constant care with the flaking paint. The floors are the original beautiful Maltese tiles and much of the character of the house will be lost if we had to change them into modern ones. Both George and I thank you for staying with us and hope to have the pleasure of hosting you in the future should you visit our lovely islands again. Kind regards, Rosa

Together with my girlfriend I stayed at Bonheur Guest House for a week and had a great time. The guesthouse is at a perfect location (at the edge of Valletta), close to the bus terminal from where you can reach the whole island, close to many restaurants and sights, but in a calm and quiet area. The guesthouse itself is very charming and has large rooms with a balcony (at least our room had). The best of all however, were the hosts (Rose-Marie and George). They were very friendly and helpful, always trying to make our stay as comfortable as possible and helping us with any questions we had.

The Bonheur got me out of a tricky situation after Booking.com bumped me out of an apartment 2 weeks before l was due to travel and Rosa and George couldn't have been kinder in saving the situation. The guest house, for that's what it is, is full of Old World charm, which may not suit everyone, but the hotel is in a quiet location, near the Hasting Gardens beyond the Osbourne Hotel. Plenty of nice restaurants around, a small pub opposite and an easy walk to most of Valletta's attractions. The room is semi-en suite with a shower and basin and a toilet at end of the corridor. Yes, it could do with a refurbishment and slightly more up-market beds, but this is part of its charm. Rosa and George couldn't have been more friendly and helpful with suggestions of what to do and see.

The guesthouse is full of history which George and Rosa, our friendly hosts, ably brought to life. They made us feel at home and suggested several interesting things for us to do. Each day breakfast included a different traditional Maltese cake. We would return here without hesitation.

We're told that there are only 2 traditional guesthouses left in Valletta - most have been turned into boutique hotels. The Bonheur is not a boutique hotel. If you want sophisticated decor and state of the art plumbing go somewhere else. But if you want to experience Maltese hospitality - a warm welcome (even at midnight!), unaffected friendliness and the feeling that nothing is too much trouble in looking after guests, this is your place. Rosa and George are just unforgettable. We wished we had stayed for more than 5 nights. On a practical level, the building could not be more conveniently situated - only 10 minutes walk to the bus station and the main sites of Valletta but the street is quiet and in our room at the back we heard nothing except the distant sound of church bells. It is also only a couple of minutes from Hastings Gardens with its superb views over the city. Our room was spacious, the beds were comfortable and we enjoyed an excellent breakfast with a different traditional Maltese pastry every morning. We couldn't recommend it too highly and are more than grateful to Rosa and George for adding such a delightful dimension to our all too brief holiday..…
