Bonheur is one of the oldest guesthouses in Valletta dating back to 1946. It is an elegant Maltese house of character boasting many beautiful features - traditional Maltese balconies, sea views, thick walls and original flooring. This friendly family owned guesthouse is flanked by Hastings Gardens and is situated in the historic city centre. It's only 5 minutes' walk from Valletta's beautiful historic buildings, museums, restaurants, shopping centre and national bus terminus.

The Bonheur Guesthouse is my ‘Home from Home’ in Malta and l have stayed there 3 times!
Be prepared for a traditional Maltese house that is spotlessly clean and the bedrooms are cleaned every day.
Rosa and George couldn’t be more kind and helpful and will try to accommodate your every need. Breakfast is included and consists of tea or coffee, orange juice, cereal, toast, eggs and a Maltese cake - what more could one want!
The Bonheur is unique in Valletta, if not the whole of Malta - old fashioned charm in an ever changing, homogenised, world. Long May it last!

What a great find! Amazing location and Rose Marie and her husband were so incredibly kind and helpful. There's a shower and sink in the room, never had any issues with waiting for the shared toilet. Every morning they made a breakfast of cereals, toast, eggs, coffee and juice. Bed was comfortable with nice soft bedding. Amazing location, no more than a 5 minute walk to the heart of Valletta. An incredible value, highly encourage you to book here!!

Even before I arrived Rosa was on hand to answer all my questions!
She and George are lovely people, who have run this guesthouse for 50 years, although the building is 150 years old - with many original features.
My bedroom was huge and had a great shower. It's a little cold in winter but Rosa provides a heater for the room. Also, the shared bathroom wasn't an issue when I was there.
The bed was so warm and comfy I could hardly get out it for breakfast in the morning! The breakfast is a lovely touch and also provides the opportunity to chat with Rosa and George in the morning.
If you need any information about your time in Malta, or ideas for trips they are eager to help. I had a late flight home and Rosa kindly told me I could keep the key to the room and check out later.
The guesthouse is in a great location and near all the places of interest in Valetta - whilst being quiet. Overall, its good value for money.
Thanks again Rosa and George ❤️

This must be the nastiest hotel/guesthouse in Valletta, if not Malta. The room was grubby and cramped, and there was a smell of drains and mould. A puddle of water in the communal toilet, which I reported, was not cleaned up until the end of my stay. Breakfast was unappetising, with the worst coffee I've ever tasted. The proprietor constantly chased for payment, with a clear preference for cash. An awful experience. Never again!

Dear Dr_Caligari, We thank you for taking the time to write a review, it is greatly appreciated. For fairness sake we would like to point out that you had booked with us for one week and paid a deposit for the first three nights. We are baffled, if the situation was as bad as you say, how come you didn't leave after the first three nights but instead extended your stay to 14 nights! As you very well aware we have a daily cleaner that does whatever needs to be done, sheets and towels are changed regularly. We offer an extended continental breakfast and you were in a room with a new shower and balcony to the front. It is very sad that the fact that we could not offer you more than a 10% discount on cash payment on our 40 Euro a day price (price includes VAT, Free WiFi, Free heater and breakfast) triggered all this anger. Kind regards, Rosa & George

Excellent old fashioned guesthouse at the heart of Valetta. Owners are friendly and accommodating, providing a tasty breakfast every day.
They are very informative and provided us with directions to great restaurants and many attractions around Malta and Gozo.

The house is magnificent, typically Maltese and located a little away from the noisy center.
Rosa and Georges are adorable owners, taking great care of us. Rosa speaks several languages and has many exciting stories to tell. The breakfast is nice and sufficient.
Our room was spacious and comfortable, with a pedestal fan. We were right next to the toilets, so very convenient.
The only downside was the heat, because if we opened the window, we were very popular with mosquitoes. Despite the mosquito repellent socket that Rosa and Georges lent us.

My wife and I stayed here for 5 nights in May of 2012. I think they have 6 rooms, we stayed in room #6. For background, I go camping quite a bit and can tolerate a lot of things, especially when I travel. The basic necessities for me are a clean room/sheets and a decent shower.
Pros:
-Friendly owner and her mother, very nice!
-Cheap (40E)
-Shower gets cleaned daily (I think) and bed gets made daily
-Noise quiets down at night
Cons:
-It's a bit run down. Looks better from the outside. The room didn't look clean (although it may have been) with stains on the floor and shower. The rug looked like it had never been vacuumed, kind of gross. The quilt on the bed had holes in it and I just felt a little dirty the whole time (which is rare for me).
-2 separate twin beds that were pushed together and made up separately. Very saggy but slept alright.
-Noisy at night from the outside street, but usually quieted down around 11pm.
-Toilet only down the hall, wash basin in room.
-Low pressure shower in the room that never really made me feel clean.
-Breakfast (bread/jam/coffee) served in a somewhat depressing bar downstairs.
It was unfortunate as we never really wanted to hang out in our room at all, it was strictly a place to sleep.
The other rooms may have been better, I don't know. A fresh coat of paint and scrubbing of floors would make a huge difference.
Without question, if I were to return to Malta (which we really enjoyed) I would definitely pay a little more to stay at a nicer place!

Dear Guests, I thank you for taking the time to write your comments regarding your stay with us. We look forward to hearing from our guests and whatever feedback they can give us to help improve our offering. Although I am sorry that your stay didn’t go as planned, for fairness sake I feel I need to clarify certain points you have made regarding our rooms and their upkeep. More, than ever before, it is impossible in this day and age, to get away with letting out dirty and shoddy rooms .We have never been accused of such and take great pride in the fact that we do thoroughly clean the rooms every single day, as cleanliness is one of our foremost priorities. Indeed, we have very recently upgraded most of our rooms with new furniture and accessories, and I can assure you and all of our readers that there are no holes in any of our bed covers and blankets. Regarding the stains on the tiles, Bonheur is situated in an authentic 150 year old Maltese house of character so some stains are normal and result from aging. We have opted to stick to the beautiful original features of the house to keep its character because new tiles would have lost much of its charm. The fact that toilets are outside the room is clearly noted on the website and our email exchange so I am surprised that this should have been pointed out as a negative from your end. It would be greatly appreciated if all our guests would inform us immediately if there is any aspect of their stay which causes discomfort. This would give us the opportunity to clarify or make amends immediately if required. As a small family run guest house we pride ourselves on our flexibility and are happy to oblige wherever possible. For example we would gladly have made up your twin beds as a single if you had so requested. I can assure you that we always do our utmost to help our guests before and during their stay with us and try to make their visit as comfortable and as relaxed as possible. Kindest regards. Rose-Marie Guillaumier Owner

We stayed at the Bonheur Guest House for 10 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It is ideally located to explore beautiful Valletta and a short level walk to the bus station to reach the rest of the island. It's in a quiet spot too, but so close to everything. We stayed in a large room which gave us plenty of space to spread out. It was so nice to stay in a traditional house with many interesting features. There are only a few rooms here, so the shared toilets are not shared by many! By far the best part of our stay here were the hosts. The family were so welcoming. They were genuinely interested in us, gave us good advice on where to go and it was a real pleasure to get to know them. We would definitely stay here again.

We're told that there are only 2 traditional guesthouses left in Valletta - most have been turned into boutique hotels. The Bonheur is not a boutique hotel. If you want sophisticated decor and state of the art plumbing go somewhere else. But if you want to experience Maltese hospitality - a warm welcome (even at midnight!), unaffected friendliness and the feeling that nothing is too much trouble in looking after guests, this is your place. Rosa and George are just unforgettable. We wished we had stayed for more than 5 nights. On a practical level, the building could not be more conveniently situated - only 10 minutes walk to the bus station and the main sites of Valletta but the street is quiet and in our room at the back we heard nothing except the distant sound of church bells. It is also only a couple of minutes from Hastings Gardens with its superb views over the city. Our room was spacious, the beds were comfortable and we enjoyed an excellent breakfast with a different traditional Maltese pastry every morning. We couldn't recommend it too highly and are more than grateful to Rosa and George for adding such a delightful dimension to our all too brief holiday..
