Ta’ Matmura is a typical 300 year old Gozitan farmhouse full of unique character features situated in the hamlet of Birbuba just outside the village of Gharb. We have one Superior 'King suite', one deluxe bedroom with 'King' sized bed and two double bedrooms (one of which can have either a double bed or twin single beds) all with en-suite facilities, air conditioning and free Wi-Fi. Three bedrooms are on the upper terrace overlooking the pool and our superior bedroom suite is located on the ground floor, also on the ground floor is the guest dinning room where we serve a varied breakfast each day between 8 am and 9 am. Ta' Matmura is ideally located to explore the wonderful island of Gozo, from beautiful scenic walks to sandy beaches and fascinating villages plus the old world charm of the narrow streets in the capital Rabat and the spectacular Citadella with the cathedral and museums.

I'd read all the five star reviews so perhaps expectations were higher than they should have been, but even so, staying at this place was a thoroughly depressing experience for my girlfriend and me. I'll try to keep it brief but the devil is in the detail here. The headline undesirable event was that the aircon wouldn't work when we got back at 1a.m. so we barely slept all night. But these things happen, and I wouldn't give the place two stars if just for that. But it was the build-up to, and astonishing aftermath of, that unfortunate event that really spoiled things. From the beginning, then: 1. Our room was decorated in a typical 1990s lazy tasteless English B&B sort of way. Random assorted plastic coat-hangers from Peacocks and Primark; Readers Digest books on a cheap pine shelf; charity shop pictures; flimsy plastic bedside lights. You know the sort of thing. But whatever - many people wouldn't notice or care, and we could easily have ignored that. 2. The door to our room opened onto a first floor outdoor terrace. It had an inside curtain down to the floor - because the door was mainly glass. The husband gave us very particular instructions to *tie the curtain RIGHT back* before leaving the room because otherwise the curtain "gets caught". Kind of annoying, because sunlight would stream in and heat up the room while we were out, and we were told not to have the aircon on unless we were in the room. Also, my girlfriend sleeps longer than me, so if I went outdoors at 8am leaving her sleeping, she'd have the light streaming in. Anyway, I quickly discovered that the curtain would *not* in fact "get caught" if you shut the door slowly and carefully. I was in the process of doing this at 7pm when the husband appeared on the terrace and practically shouted at me in his faint Liverpudlian accent, "EXCUSE ME! What did I tell you about tying the curtain back?!" Now call me old-fashioned, but I don't really want to be spoken to like that by a B&B owner when I'm paying them £80 a night, you know? (But again, I still had a fairly open mind about the place even after this - he calmed down pretty quickly when I profusely apologised and promised to observe his Golden Rule in future). 3. Car hire. I rang up after booking the place and asked for any car hire tips. He said very clearly, "No problem we'll sort that out for you - we'll have a car waiting for you on Saturday". When we arrived there was no car. (And no apology). The car guy, their mate, was on his way. We had to wait for him to pick us up and drive us *back* into Victoria to sort out the car. If we'd have known this we'd have just sorted it out ourselves beforehand. 4. Swimming pool. Only allowed to use it between 10am and 7pm (I think 7 - might have been 8). So no morning or evening swimming. No bathroom towels by the pool. No pool towels provided. Not a huge deal, but there's a slightly unfriendly sign, and you just get the sense they'd basically really rather you didn't. 5. MIND-BENDING RUDENESS after the aircon failed. I told him in the morning when I went to breakfast (which is only served between 8 and 9 by the way). I was totally calm and polite about it. The wife was making breakfast beside him. They were both silent. No apology. He just said "All I can do is take a look at it". Hm. Then, when I was eating breakfast I overheard the wife in the adjacent kitchen moaning about the fact we came back at 1.a.m.! Bear in mind they knew we were going to the nearby fireworks and procession, and we had a key, and he said when we were leaving "make sure you take the key because we might be in bed by the time you get back". There was NO suggestion of a curfew. After breakfast I spoke to my girlfriend about what to do. The guy wanted to take the aircon unit apart. But who knows if he'd be able to fix it, or how long that would take. They'd been slightly rude and annoying, the aircon wasn't working, the room was basically a bit depressing, and we just couldn't face four more nights. So we said "thanks, but we're going to find somewhere else". He then tried to charge us full price. Ok, we were leaving him in the lurch for the other three nights, but frankly, so what? The aircon broke and we had one of the worst night's sleeps of our lives, and we were on our summer holiday. Neither of them had even slightly apologised. So I'm calmly talking to him and saying, "Is it really fair to charge full price?" and he's (to be fair, also calmly) saying "Yes it is" when his wife walks by and literally shouts at me "We couldn't go to bed til you got back and you didn't get in til one o'clock in the morning!" I mean...WTF?! I said, astonished, "Ah, yes, I overheard you saying something about that while I was having breakfast - I wondered if it was aimed at me." And she turned her puce-red face round at me and shouted "WELL, IT WAS!" and stormed off. I gave him 50 euros and we got the hell out of there. Now. The husband's perhaps a bit stressed out (can't think why...) but he seemed like a basically decent guy most of the time. But the wife has all the charm of a school dinner lady resentful at not having fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a traffic warden. I don't want to be too harsh here. The aircon failure was obviously unforeseen, and the other stuff was all, on its own, fairly minor. But the overall impression is REALLY not what you want on holiday. Or at least not what we wanted. These two are from England, on Gozo for four years, presumably since taking earlyish retirement of some kind. They love diving. Gozo's great in many ways (not least for diving), but I expect they're going slightly mad from island fever. I would be. Maybe we weren't their cup of tea. Who knows. But I can't in all conscience fail to give this place a pretty serious thumbs-down.

Well you can't please everyone - certainly not this person, which is OK but I just wish people would get the details correct. I haven't the time to go through each and every comment here, but this one is typical of his overall review, the car hire, well I checked the emails and this is the correct version of events, and no mention of "we'll have a car waiting for you on Saturday" Mark Croft Sat, Jul 20, 9:36 AM Hi Adam, Have spoken to the car hire people and we can sort this once you arrive here later today. See you soon. Adam King Sat, Jul 20, 10:19 AM Great stuff. Thanks a lot. See you a few hours. ....unfortunately the rest follows a similar pattern, and as I said you can't please everyone, but it seems we please most of our guests from the reviews received so far, so we will just leave it there.

Property's Favorite Review
We stayed for 6 nights in this idyllic property which has been lovingly restored retaining period features but incorporating modern luxuries such as air con and beautiful bathrooms. The hosts Mark and Jackie do everything and their attention to detail and high standards are reflected in the magnificent end result. Our room and en-suite were tastefully furnished with a lot of local items. We found the pool and communal areas were always immaculate something that can only be achieved by the owners living on site. Breakfast is served downstairs in a spacious room with a cooked variation each day, fresh fruit, fresh orange juice, toast and excellent local jams. Having stayed away frequently in hot countries buying and transporting quantities of drinking water has always been an inconvenience never mind the environmental issues but Mark and Jackie have a solution . We were issued with an insulated water bottle each with unlimited access to a water cooler from which the bottles could be filled - there was also a continuous supply of hot water for the tea and coffee provided. Location wise Gharb is a quiet large village with several restaurants and Matmura is located on the edge in a peaceful area within walking distance of an hourly bus service to The capital Victoria from which the rest of the transport system radiates over the island. Mark arranged a hire car for part of our stay which allowed us to access some of the smaller remote locations. However in my opinion what really sets this property on a higher level is not what I have already mentioned but the people behind it. Mark and Jackie our expats who have fallen in love with Gozo who seem to have an encyclopedic knowledge of it and can communicate it in an inspiring way. We found their recommendations of places to visit and restaurants etc spot on which really added to our Gozo experience. Before visiting any location Mark would bring up relevant photos from his vast personal library on a screen at breakfast. Don’t waste time searching for a location or accommodation on Gozo just come here you won’t be disappointed!

Mark & Jackie were great hosts and we would recommend Ta' Matmura to all. Breakfast was healthy and filling with a different cooked option each day. We really enjoyed our chats over breakfast about the Gozo culture, lifestyle & also recommendations for places to visit / eat. Property was lovely, we sat out and had our tea one night on the balcony overlooking the pool. Room was a decent size with new bathroom. The property is a few minutes walk to the nearest bus stop & the bus comes hourly, so just need to have the timetable. The thermal bottles available to use whilst there kept us refreshed & hydrated on days out and a great idea to avoid buying plastic water bottles. We really enjoyed our time with you, thank you for being so welcoming!

A very special place with a beautiful Courtyard surrounding the swimming pool and some resident Sparrows that provided great entertainment and laughter. Our room was beautifully done out with all the facilities and comfort we needed. Full time access to the breakfast room with its tea and Coffee making facilities, fridge and cold water meant our room remained uncluttered and free of ants! Mark and Jackie we simply wonderful and looked after us so well we were reluctant to head home. Their breakfasts were first class and we had the chance to chat with the other guests around the breakfast table. Gozo is a beautiful Island with lots of hidden coves and lovely walks as well as a bustling and interesting small capital town of Victoria. Ta' Matmura Farmhouse is perfectly placed in the Northwest of the Island and we would thoroughly recommend a stay here - quite magical.
