All of the positives that we read in reviews of Sonja's "Casa Matiki" were absolutely correct - fantastic 'slow food' breakfasts in a beautiful kitchen/dining area, a great location for day tripping throughout Istria, lots of really valuable recommendations of where to visit and where to eat, and some really lovable dogs and cat. I'll also agree that Sonja is about as charming a woman as you will meet, and is a large part of what makes this such a special place to stay; you are treated like family here. My wife and I had only planned to stay for one night (maybe two), but it was so perfect for us, and for seeing Istria, that we ended up staying six nights! We had a room in the main house, with a small kitchenette, a table, and a comfortable couch. There were also various sized apartments in three adjacent buildings. Our room was large, very clean, the shower worked well, and the bed was comfortable. The facility is about a mile or so out of town, adjacent to a country road but with very minimal traffic during the night. The car park is secured. We loved Istria, but have to say that staying at Casa Matiki was a large part of making those six days so memorable. We hope to return to Istria again in the future, and the choice for accommodations will be an easy one - one call to Sonja to book our room again. Thank you Sonja, for making our stay such a relaxing and fun time!

My husband and I were only going to spend one night at Casa Matiki and ended up spending 6 nights !!! That is all because of Sonja, our incredible hostess, whom we now consider a friend. Casa Matiki became our unexpected home away from home in Istria, Croatia and we could not have been happier. We deliberately chose a location in the middle of Istria so that we could access any part of Istria within a 1\2 hour drive yet be far away from hordes of tourists. Sonja created the most amazing breakfasts every morning including the yummiest homemade cakes I have ever had anywhere. Truly! The sumptuous breakfasts also included delicious crepes , homemade jams and buns, meats, cheese, yoghurt and lots more. It was an unbelievable way to start the day. Even though we had our own apartment, I would NOT miss out on one of Sonja's world-class breakfasts. Sonja could not have done enough for us from making invaluable sightseeing and restaurant recommendations to making arrangements to see a dentist on an emergency basis. Nothing was too much trouble. Sonja totally understood the kinds of things we wanted to do and always steered us in the right direction. Sonja has the most patient demeanour, nothing was a problem even when we inadvertently locked her out late one night! Some of my fondest memories of Casa Matiki were the long conversations that we had with Sonja. Unfortunately I had to do some work while travelling and having the secure wifi was a blessing. It was also a treat to have company while I was working as Jazz, Sonja's delightful cat, always slept on my lap as I worked away late at night or early in the morning! You have never been to a place like Casa Matiki before. You feel like you are visiting a favourite aunt who wants nothing more than to make you the happiest you could possibly be while staying with her. I rate Casa Matiki a 20 on a scale of 1 to 10. We hope to go back and visit our newest friend sometime soon.

Dear luv2travel Thank you so much for taking your time to write such a detailed extensive review. You were special guests , because you had just booked to stay with us only one night , but I am especially glad that you stay the whole week with your positive energy. there was a common feeling we found in our conversations about life situations that only women know, so we became friends very quickly. I am sorry that I am a little late with the answer , but you know that I am on my own. I just wanted to take time and write an answer when I can be calm and dedicated to you . I hope and I will be very glad if I can welcome you at Casa Matiki again. We are waiting for you and your husband . Sonja

Last week I spent there only one night just to see Sonja and her home. First time I was there more than ten years ago and since then I visit Sonja at least once per year. Why? I feel like in house of our dreams, breakfast prepared with love, thousand of details, Sonja’s realized new ideas each year. I just enjoy there.

Welcoming kitchen/dining area with the burning wood stove is the heart of this lovely establishment. Sadly, we stayed one night only, but left only after experiencing one off the best breakfasts ever. Freshly baked breads, cakes and abundance of top quality local produce were all equally delicious. Sonja, the owner, is charming and dedicated host. This was our second visit and we shall definitely be back.

In Sonja´s Casa di Matiki we experienced the authentic Istrian way of live! The morning started with one of the best breakfast ever, with fresh bread, locally produced cheese, salami and a series of home-made jam for screening the best one  (I liked the peach-lavendel combination best). The highlight was the omelette (frittata) spiced with salvia and made with eggs from her own hens that live happily in her garden. Not to forget the warm ricotta cheese-cake which recipe Sonja brought probably from Italy when she was living there. All accompanied by two of her dogs and ours that got along each other very well. Casa di Matiki is located just 20 minutes drive east from Rovinj, so it´s a very good retreat if the guest wants to explore also other parts of the west coast (Limski Kanal and Porec) or Istria´s rural capital Pazin. From Casa di Matiki we also visited the medieval village Svetvincenat with it´s Grimani castle, only a few minutes away. Sonja is a very warm-hearted host who enjoys to give best advises for all the attractions in the surrounding. In the morning she also showed us her donkeys located a few hundred meters away on a separated field. This was a really great experience, specially since donkeys are a kind of symbol for Dalmatia and they are one of my favourite animals. Best place to stay !
