The hotel is in a beautiful location and could be wonderful but was let down by so many things. NOT the standard we expect from Macdonald Hotels. The staff although friendly appear poorly trained and there aren't enough of them. Advertised and expected facilities were not available. The temperature was 26 degrees but there was no bar service for the outside tables. Guests carried drinks down stairs and through 2 fire doors to access fresh air. Tables were not cleared until after 10pm so the terrace was full of dirty glasses. Swimming was not really an option for residents. We were not allowed to book in advance and on the day of arrival there was no availability. The only possibility for the next two days was 6.30 am. Getting up for our 6.30 swims did give us the advantage of arriving at breakfast before the queues got out of hand. The promised bathrobes in our deluxe bedroom were not available (Covid was given as the explanation?! We were planning to use them to avoid crowded changing rooms...) The food was very tasty but rather unimaginative and the menu didn't embrace any local or Scottish produce (eg French marmalade at breakfast and a very limited selection of malts) The location is spectacular. No information is provided to guests about local attractions or indeed about the grounds and how to exit the surrounding golf course! We did manage to successfully navigate a walking route to the wonderful Cardrona Forest Park which is adjacent to the hotel.

Myself and 3 friends stayed at the hotel for a 2 night spa break. Went for a swim at 2pm and hoped room would be ready for us coming out at 3. Unfortunately, we were told due to staff shortages the room wasn't ready, however given the glorious weather and absolutely stunning scenery were more than happy to have a couple of drinks in spikes bar. Had a facial with Aleisha which was blissful and was delighted with the results. Went for dinner at 7 and despite some previous poor reviews we're pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food, also the speed of our order. Same could be said for the service at breakfast. Staff are definitely rushed off their feet but all still very pleasant. Think some people need to remember we are still coming out of an horendous pandemic that no one couldve predicted would have such a devastating affect for so long and cut the staff some slack and just enjoy the fact we are able to get a break again in such beautiful surroundings. Cant wait to return.

We booked to stay with a 9 month old baby and required a cot bed. We were given a single bed which the baby clearly would roll off, asked reception at 2.30pm for a cot, didn't arrive by 5.30pm so we asked again. Finally at around 6.30 a cot bed that collapsed on itself (kept a video to show how ridiculous bed was), without a mattress arrived. (also had a large square bit of metal sticking out the middle of the section the child is meant to sleep on, not to mention it was filthy and covered in stour). This bed was totally unfit to be used. Complained to reception , the girl was trying to help but explained they didn't know if they had one but were trying to source it from elsewhere (I.e externally-from another hotel). By 7.30, we've got an exhausted baby but we finally get a travel cot that doesn't collapse and thankfully its clean. Issue now is there's no mattress and we've to use a duvet as a mattress. NHS advice is that duvets for under 1s can result in cot deaths,2nd time in a few hours we've been given something that could seriously harm. We speak to reception again and by 8.30 they come down with a mattress but no sheet to fit. (Defense of the reception staff: they did bring a single sheet that we could safely use) What was meant to be a relaxing overnight is now a stress fest, we had our bags packed at 8.30 to head home because we didn't think we could be supplied with something safe for the baby. If you're planning on coming here with infants, I'd think again. To be honest I wouldn't stay unless you're pretty relaxed about sids risk. There's a real lack of staff here and the people they have are undertrained. (Must say the staff on reception are friendly and do what they can under difficult circumstances) Hotel management: you need to provide basic facilities for infants to sleep. Not only that but you need to train your staff on what is safe for a child to sleep on. A safe cot with a mattress, its not an unreasonable request.

I’ve held back reviewing waiting to see if things had improved. Sadly it appears not. We arrived to a non made up room with the excuse that the linen hadn’t arrived yet that day. It appears that it still going on. Are they not paying their bills? Dinner service was a joke with young servers wandering about like headless chickens not knowing which table to serve. Breakfast took ages. Room not as bad as others have said. My wife wrote a complaint letter and we were offered a free overnight….are they joking?

I recently had a 4 day stay at the hotel with 2 rounds of golf booked in. We were extremely lucky with the weather and it was glorious all weekend. We had driven all the way up from Portsmouth and had been looking forward to it for a while. The setting of the hotel and golf course is amazing. We were surrounded by hills and great scenery which is what you would probably have seen from the photos on the website. However the photos of the course and hotel don’t seem to be very recent at all. The hotel is extremely dated and needs some serious refurbishment. The key system is very old and they only have one key per room with the main part of the key needed to turn the electrics on in the room. The staff are all very friendly and helpful however they are no where near enough of them. The hotel seem to have got greedy with the bookings and have crammed everyone in without sufficient staff or training. Lunch wasn’t able to be served in the restaurant one day due to the evening being fully booked. This was extremely disappointing. The food was good, however the portions were small and it felt like the hotel were rationing the food due to not having enough. They had also ran out of 3/5 of the bottles of white wine they have on their list with the staff not knowing which was which. It was very clear what the priority of the hotel was and it wasn’t the customers! Moving on to the ‘championship’ golf course, which looks incredible in pictures. There are posters around the hotel with the latest ranking of the golf monthly magazine top 100 golf courses in the UK - 71. The first thing to say is that the greens are absolutely horrendous and the worst I have ever played on. There is absolutely no mention of the poor condition when you book and really they shouldn’t be charging anyone at all! It looks like they haven’t watered the greens for about 3 months. They are completely brown, scorched and rock hard. One of my putts actually rolled next to the hole and then started rolling back ending up off the green. They are unplayable. This again points to the greed of the hotel. Besides the greens, the course is extremely difficult. The rough has not been cut in years and you will lose a lot of balls. You should not play this course unless you are a single figure handicap. Due to the state of the greens it is really not worth playing and will be a waste of money. The hotel and golf course have plenty of potential but unfortunately have not lived up to it at all and needs some serious investment. What a shame about
