After visiting many years ago it was a pleasure to come back and enjoy the amazing views and wonderful hospitality from Sara et al. Highly recommend. Great location high up up giving a stunning birds eye view of the harbour without being down too close to the late night noise around there. Plenty of showers and seating . Pete

We stopped at the Hotel Breidafjordur, just down the hill, without a reservation, at the end of August. They had room there, but suggested the hostel they also own, which is the Sjonarholl. It is run by the proprietor's daughter Sara, with help from Smari and Tim, and they couldn't have been more welcoming and accomodating. We stayed in a private room with a double bed, which came with linens (we've seen reviews where people had to pay extra for the linens; maybe this is the case in the dormitory portion). The room was small but big enough for two people and two suitcases. It had a table and two chairs; no closet. This is a guest house, not a hotel, and we could have made use of the beautiful kitchen and living area and outdoor patio, but we weren't there long enough. Having a community kitchen and living area is a perfect way to meet other travellers. Stykkisholmur is a beautiful little harbor town where, with a geothermal pool, several restaurants and a ferry to islands in the bay, one could spend a few days. Smari gave us a great recommendation for our trip back to Reykjavik: bypass the tunnel from Borganes and go around the stunning Borgarfjordur. Hostel Sjonarholl is very clean and well maintained, and we would stay there again in a heartbeat.…

We go to this hostel every spring, in May, as we go to Iceland from Ireland to research brent geese. The owners are super friendly and accessible, and the daughter, Sarah, has just returned from England with her boyfriend/partner to upgrade and refurbish any of the minor problems there may have been in the past. We like the totally relaxed environment at the hostel. The facilities currently are basic, but very adequate, and the beds are comfortable.

We stayed one night here. The location was good and convenient for us. The hostel has some nice views and it was fairly clean; this is where the positives ended really. Firstly bedding isn't included in the cost of booking so we had to pay €22 extra when we arrived for two of us. This wasn't made clear when I booked online (the confirmation email does show linen not included but only at the very bottom). In my opinion the owners should ensure that this is more obvious as including this extra cost the room was really poor value and we would have booked somewhere else if we'd been aware of the total cost. The beds were particularly uncomfortable and ridiculously squeaky. The walls are all super thin so you can hear what's going on throughout the hostel. The shower I used had to be held as there was no fixture on the wall. Also there's really limited parking outside - it was quiet when we were there and it was already full. Overall this was the worst value place we stayed in a 2 week trip to Iceland. If you can I'd recommend spending a bit more and staying somewhere else…

We were there in July (2 adults and 2 small kids) in a quadriple room on the 1st floor. The room was so narrow that with the luggages open on the floor it was not possible to move. Our door's lock did not work, even after they gave us a new key we could not lock it. Overall overpriced and poorly maintained. There was a terrace but it needs repairing and cleaning.

Had a great overnight stay here. Would love to have spent longer in this beautiful little town. The owners are great people and the location is perfect. Lots to do in the area check out Flatey Island if you get a chance, or take the shellfish tour. Cheers guys

One night in this cute hostel next to the harbour. The hostel is a little bit old but cosy. The staff is very friendly. There is a kitchen with all you need to cook and a nice dining room in a veranda.

I was there with only one family. The walls are thin, but this wasn't a problem when almost no one is there. For the price, you can't expect more than this. The room and bathrooms were clean, the people were friendly, the location is close to the harbour. Only minus is that I woke up with a sore back the next morning. When flipping the mattress I found I had slept on a 1 inch high 4x4 plastic case laying between the mattress and it's cover all night. Bit weird this wasn't noticed by staff when changing the beds...

For a Hostel, the experience was not that bad. Our room was just off the kitchen/common area, and we could hear Everything that was going on outside our room. If you do stay, room 14 is located in the common area (what?) and room 4 and 5 are going to have the best views of the harbor. The price is not bad, but I am sure there are a lot more places that offer comparable rates for better lodging.
