Located a short drive outside of Vík, so the rooms were very quiet and we had an excellent sleep. The breakfast included with our suite was fantastic, with a huge assortment of food and drinks. Rooms were very clean, staff were helpful, and we even had a dancing cranefly on the window to entertain us. lol Would absolutely stay here again. :D

Stayed here for 2 nights with my partner over New Years Eve and have to say our stay here from start to finish was nothing short of fabulous! We picked this hotel mainly because of its location as we were visiting Jökulsárlón the following day. We wanted somewhere roughly in between there and the airport. Although both are still a fair drive from the hotel, the scenery en route is absolutely stunning.

We weren’t sure what to expect for our stay after reading some mixed reviews, but upon arrival we were able to park easily in the spacious car park and check in was so quick and easy. We were told we had been upgraded to a suite, and wow, what a lovely room it was! We were in a new (or newly done?) building with our room looking out towards the restaurant (and mountains which we didn’t notice until we left in partial light). The room had everything and more than we needed, including a huge comfortable bed, sofa and easy chairs, and a large bathroom/wet room.
We decided we must use the outdoor hot tub & sauna whilst staying here, so popped in before dinner - which was lovely, but a little bracing with a chilly wind blowing. There’s a little changing room there with free towels to use which is great too.

Being New Years Eve and after a very long day of travel we decided to eat the buffet dinner in the hotel restaurant, again wasn’t sure what to expect but the food was delicious and the choice was great! There’s a complete mixture of foods, including traditional Icelandic dishes like fish stew - yummy! Didn’t find it too expensive either as you’re pretty much getting a 3 course dinner including water and tea/coffee. The hotel also put on a fireworks display during the evening, so we were able to watch these whilst we ate - was such a lovely atmosphere! We really enjoyed our dinner there, so decided to return on our second night too. We also had the breakfast buffet both mornings, which again was great with lots of choice. Can’t fault it!
All in all we had a fabulous stay here, the room was wonderful, the food was great and the views around the hotel are spectacular! I would highly recommend a stay here, we would definitely visit again!

On arrival we were checked in quickly by polite and helpful staff. The organisation of the hotel is a bit unusual, the building where the reception is located is new and stylish, but houses the reception, bar and restaurant, the bedrooms are actually in separate buildings around and opposite the reception building, which we found a bit odd as when it rained or snowed it was a bit a annoying to cross from our building to the reception building in the mornings for breakfast, just a minor niggle though. We were given a room in their newly completed building, it was big, clean and stylish. I've seen some of the rooms in their older buildings and they are a lot smaller and look a bit dated, so if possible ask for a room in the new block when you check in. The bed was really high off the ground and comfortable. The room had two armchairs, coffee table, TV, hairdryer, toiletries, kettle with tea and coffee, thumbs up! Bathroom was also big and clean, however the shower was a bit strange in that there was no shower curtain or barrier so water would go everywhere. Breakfast buffet was amazing with loads of hot and cold options, loved it. The hotel is about 10 mins drive outside Vik so is totally dark at night so it's good for spotting Northern lights - ask the reception staff for the best spots to wait! We were lucky to see them during our stay there. Would I recommend this hotel? A definite yes!

whether you are Icelandic or foreigner you have to spend few days here in this amazing hotel. The rooms are big and cosy.
There are only 10 rooms in each house so you feel like you are almost alone no disturbing naighbour above you. There are many small units which makes it so different from other places. it offers everything a hot tub and a Sauna a wonderful Restaurant. The rooms and the whole aria is very comfortable for wheelchairs they have special rooms in each unit.
The location is on the road 214 to Þakgil which you must see, have a picknic in the cave and walk some of the hiking paths there and splash in the river. The drive in to Þakgil has a lot of twist and turns and surprises around each corner you will love it.
Reynisfjara is close by and a must see too but please be careful there. All around you find a interesting places and a lot to discover.

We vwere booked in here for 2 nights as part of an organised tour. The hotel is lovely with spacious clean rooms which are very cosy even in cold weather. Lovely scenery round about. We had breakfast included in our package which is just as well as there are no other cafes or restaurants anywhere nearby - unless you have a car. The breakfast is ususal buffet fare but was really nice and plenty to choose from including fresh fruit.
If you have an evening meal the menu is very restricted and pretty expensive. The buffet (which we had one night) was over £31 per person but in saying that the food was plentiful and delicious. The second night we opted for a share of a pizza as we had eaten too much the night before. To be honest there wasn't a lot else to choose from.
The hotel does have a sauna and an open air hot tub which looked inviting but we just didn't have the time to use them.

As we arrived at the hotel we were feeling a little underwhelmed. The exterior looked like older traditional Icelandic buildings.

We were part of a small tour and our tour guide went to get our room keys so he could drive us to our building as the rooms are spread out across several buildings.

We were in room 47 and when we entered our building we were impressed with the decor.
The room was light and airy and we found there was plenty of space.

We really liked the decor and felt the bathroom was well decorated.

We had a view looking out over to the ocean and were very happy with the room.

We had to ask at reception for an extra pillow as we were only provided with one but the bed was comfortable and cosy.

The lighting was not great but we liked it and found it relaxing for the evening.

We ate at the hotel restaurant on both nights and enjoyed tue buffet at a cost of 6200 or each. We also had a bottle of wine to share and our bill was around £107 each night depending on our choice of wine.

The food as lovely but the food was not kept hot enough and unfortunately did get cold quite quickly.

There was plenty to choose from and the staff we friendly and welcoming.

We had read a few reviews about hearing other guests, we didn’t.

The breakfast in the mornings was scrambled egg, bacon, beans.

There was also breads, pastries, waffles, porridge and fresh fruits and cereals there was plenty of choice.

Overall we really liked this hotel and it felt more relaxing and in keeping with its surroundings.

Nice hotel with large rooms. Bit disappointing to note the room was not cleaned properly. Tea coffee tray had biscuit pieces which was not cleaned. The surrounding and locality are superb. Access to rooms from reception and restaurant is very difficult through outside environment. Therefore in winter time this is not easy.

Hotel Katla is a wonderful hotel. My fiancé and I were on an Iceland roadtrip last week during Christmas in 2022. We were supposed to drive out to the Glacier Lagoon but the weather turned and the roads were closed past Vik. We tried our luck to stop at the Hotel Katla since I had stayed there 6 years prior and knew the Hotel Katla was amazing.

We were lucky enough to get one of the last rooms available since the weather had been bad all Christmas weekend. The front desk attendant was SO kind, accommodating, and friendly despite being under a ton of stress from stranded tourists. He helped us make sure our room was ready, clean, and available. And he helped us make sure the roads were safe the next day before we left.

The Hotel Katla was extremely accommodating in terms of extending our check-out time until the roads reopened the day after we checked in and was willing to let us stay another night at the same rate as the night before if we couldn't leave.

The restaurant served delicious foods and opened for lunch on the day the roads were closed to make sure all hotel guests were able to eat if they chose to.

The hotel manager was friendly and welcoming, as were the bartenders and waitresses. The housekeepers were also very kind.

We look forward to returning to the Hotel Katla in good weather conditions. It is a wonderful hotel, with great service and amenities, in a fabulous location.

My husband, adult 24 year old son, and I landed at the Keflavik Airport around 6:30 am, and were headed to the Vestrahorn area. We wanted to get to Vik, and was able to safely drive and stay here for our first night in Iceland. The rooms were quite comfortable, they have a great restaurant, and buffet breakfast to assist in our heading out for the 2nd day of Iceland adventure. The front desk was extremely helpful as we arrived early, but they were able to process a room in a timely fashion. Our building had a very nice open room, and we played cribbage in the evening. Don't hesitate..a great place to stay!

There were 10 in our group that were on a Collette Tour to see the Northern Lights in Iceland who spent 3 nights at Hotel Katla. Breakfast was wonderful. Rooms were very nice with comfortable beds. Location was great to get to and from many local places to visit especially because we had a storm come through with wind so high it was dangerous to go very far. The Lava show in Vik was great.

Is there a laundry facility in the hotel or nearby laundromat?
Answer from Andrew A
Lambertville, New Jersey10 contributions3 helpful votes
We didn't need to do any laundry at that point in our trip, so didn't inquire as to whether Hotel Katla offered that amenity. I do know that laundromats are few and far between in Iceland (there are a couple in Reykjavik), so except for one load of laundry that we had done during our stay at Hotel Ranga in Hella, we washed underwear and socks in the bathroom sink of our rooms and dried the clothes on the radiators. Worked pretty well.
