Hotel Katla by Keahotels is celebrated for its stunning location near Vik and the natural beauty that surrounds it, making it a firm favorite among visitors. While opinions on value vary, with the restaurant's pricing being a point of contention for some, the hotel's cleanliness is consistently lauded, with guests enjoying spotlessly maintained rooms. The service is generally commended for being friendly, despite occasional lapses in the restaurant.
The hotel exudes a cozy and modern vibe, with the added luxury of hot tubs and beautiful sea views in select rooms. However, the amenities and room comfort receive mixed reviews, with some guests suggesting improvements.

Detailed Reviews
The hotel is easy to find off Route One and has lovely views. This hotel would be a good base from which to explore the Vik region. The rooms are clean and have high ceilings which contribute to a sense of spaciousness. You can easily park relatively close to your room which makes it easy to unload luggage. As was our experience in most Icelandic hotels the shower is terrific. The shower provided a wonderful volume of water at a very strong pressure. The dinning area had plenty of tables so one was always available. The food was good, but a bit on the pricey side. The breakfast buffet had a good variety of well-prepared foods. The front desk staff was polite and helpful. We would stay here again.

The hotel is spread over several single-storey buildings, distributed in an area around the central body of the restaurant. The rooms, with the sloping roof, although basic, are pleasant and clean. The best location is those with a sea view.
In the structure there is a small house with a sauna and a small outdoor tub with hot water.
The included breakfast is quite good, with a variety of foods, sweet and savory, although mainly cold, such as cured meats, cheeses and herring. The waffle machine was appreciated. The room used is very large and well-kept and the staff is very courteous and attentive.
Possibility to park the car for free near your accommodation.

At our 3. We stayed at Hotel Katla for Icelandic trips, even if it is not one of the cheapest accommodations. We had a room on the ground floor of the new building and were especially surprised by the size of the room and bathroom. Both are huge by Icelandic standards. The rooms were very clean and were cleaned on request even during the stay. Only when you sat in one of the deep armchairs could you see the dust hanging from the underside of the bed.
We especially liked the breakfast. I'm sure everyone will find something to their taste. The freshly baked bread was really delicious. Actually, we were just missing a scrambled egg, but we got well fed even without that. The young people from the service were really brisk. There wasn't used dishes standing around for long.
The hotel also offers a small ala card selection for dinner. In our opinion, however, you should rather treat yourself to the around 52 euros (without drinks) expensive buffet.
For us, the hotel was also a good choice because of the location. 4 km to Vik, 180 km to the geyser and 200 km to the glacial lagoon ... all fine.

An unusual hotel set up with several buildings that your room may be in. We had a room set much further back from the main reception area where breakfast was served. The days we stayed the parking lot was iced over and downpours of rain that doesn't make anyone want to walk to breakfast and back. It also means any snacks or food are a walk away at night. The room being set away from the reception left you feeling very remote. I can't comment on any staff interaction since, I never had any interactions. The breakfast area was huge with plenty of seating and space to move, but oddly very limited menu items to pick from. I would stay again due to convenient location, comfy room, but I would only stay if I knew my room was in the main building. This hotel set up with remote buildings is something I've never considered having to think about, so buyer beware if you stay on a cold and rainy day.

This place is a little odd. Rooms are scattered throughout the property and in separate buildings. Our building was old and the room was dated and dark. The hallway beyond our room was completely dark until one family checked in and turned the hallway lights on themselves. Our curtains were falling off the hooks. The bathroom was laid out in an awkward manner with towels and a small shelf behind the door. No where else to put your stuff and no hooks.
You must walk outside to access the dining room. Breakfast buffet was great as was the dinner buffet. Displayed beautifully and tasted good. However, if you want to order ala carte for dinner, expect to be ignored. Very slow service and once your dinner is delivered, no one will make eye contact. Too bad for me - I wanted to try the Creme Brulé and ice cream.
Gym is old and creepy (again, another building). Hot tub was big and behind a fence to block the wind.
Because of the layout of the property, we would not recommend this location for the Northern Lights. Everyone is driving around trying to find their building and the headlights were very distracting.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed our breakfast and dinner buffets. However, we apologize for the slow service and the lack of attentiveness, this is certainly not the standard we aim for. Regarding Norther Lights, we have to disagree as we believe we have a perfect base for Northern Lights observation. You only need to take a couple of steps away from the parking lot to avoid artificial light and enjoy the stunning natural display. We hope you might give us another chance in the future. Kind regards, Hotel Katla

Reminiscent of a youth hostel in terms of looks & feels.
OK in itself, ok restaurant (you don't go to Iceland for culinary delights), drafty bar and so on, but ok. But that room…..so small and the bathroom the same. In our room there was a wall socket directly opposite the shower, a good meter away... probably to make showering extra exciting. No 0.5m of space on either side of the bed, no bedside tables and light switch next to your (too thin) pillow in the headboard. You can easily follow the conversation of your neighbors... in other words, the dividing walls are nice and thin. On my next visit to Iceland I would happily skip this hotel.

Because of the price, over 250 euros per night the double, including breakfast, we settled for standard rooms. They are clean but really very small, the bathroom is very small, it is difficult to get into it and when you take a shower you will wet everything.
Breakfast, on the other hand, is above average.
Overall, it's fine if you're passing through.

Very nice, quiet location near Vik. We stayed there for 4 nights and had chosen and booked the hotel in advance of the 1-week Christmas holiday - based on the planned travel route. We received a free Christmas upgrade to a particularly large room with a beautiful view upon arrival, so the rating naturally refers to that. The service staff were friendly and competent, the meals (breakfast and evening buffet, alternatively a la carte) were also very good, the only slightly problematic issue was sometimes a bit of a crowd at the evening buffet due to the large number of mostly Chinese and Indian guests, some of whom had severe colds, which was a bit of a concern in the current infection situation with flu and corona. However, this is not the hotel's responsibility, a staggered dining operation could possibly be helpful, but there were no special hygiene regulations. We used the leisure area (open-air pool) with attached fitness room once. Everything was clean and adequately maintained. Overall a very positive experience, we would be happy to come back.

Our stay here at Hotel Kayla was very nice. The rooms are comfortable and modern, the restaurant and bar were a highlight, and the included breakfast buffet in the morning was delicious! Jakub at the bar was friendly and provided top service while taking time to chat with us. Our dinner was fabulous as we shared the lamb shank and arctic char. The breakfast buffet in the morning also included friendly staff members walking around ensuring all was well. The selection at the breakfast buffet was amazing and everything we tried was delicious. I especially enjoyed the Icelandic rye bread with meat and cheese and their waffles with so many topping options. Also, it was only about 5 min outside of Vik and 40min or less to all the big waterfalls, glaciers, and the black beach. If ever I’m in Vik again, I will be staying at Hotel Katla again.

I'm so pleased with my stay at Katla Hotel. The staff was incredibly welcoming and attentive, ensuring that my every need was met. My room was both modern and spotlessly clean, with a comfy bed and cozy atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing night's sleep. The breakfast was simply outstanding, featuring a wide selection of delicious local and international dishes. The location was ideal for exploring the city's sights, making my trip all the more memorable. Katla Hotel truly exceeded my expectations, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a wonderful and worry-free stay. I can't wait to return!

We didn't need to do any laundry at that point in our trip, so didn't inquire as to whether Hotel Katla offered that amenity. I do know that laundromats are few and far between in Iceland (there are a couple in Reykjavik), so except for one load of laundry that we had done during our stay at Hotel Ranga in Hella, we washed underwear and socks in the bathroom sink of our rooms and dried the clothes on the radiators. Worked pretty well.
They are recessed. I did not have any problems using my adapter.
Yes per person . As with any eatery there are cheaper / more expensive options. Drinks certainly drives up the price.
Our room didn’t have a microwave. I didn’t see one readily available by the breakfast buffet either.
