This place is beyond anything I ever imagined. The road to get here was a little scary but we managed to arrive without a flat tire or cracked windshield. Camping here was the highlight of our 9 days in Iceland. The views are unreal. I regret only spending one night here. I would recommend this place to everyone. FYI - no wifi here.
Very nice campsite, very clean bathroom with enough showers and toilets. They look pretty new. The cocking are is in a beautiful cave with a nice fireplace. Use headlights as the cave has no light. But a lot of candles. Very peaceful environment even the road has some adventurous parts:).
This simply is the most beautiful Campsite we've camped at during our holiday in Iceland. The road to it was amazing also. It's a gravel road that takes you between some of the most mossy/grassy hills in the southern part of the country. Few people say a 4x4 would be needed, we did it with an Dacia Dokker van though. If you plan to stay at a campsite near Vik, this is the place you definitely need to go see. The showers were fine, toilet's too. If it's a rainy day, you can choose to cook in a small cave filled with tables and candles. Total costs for two adults with one camper was ISK 4000 and worth every penny.
The drive to Þakgil is half the fun! 20 kms of undulating, winding, gravel road leads to this beautiful camping site nestled in a valley, surrounded by mountains. The site is typical grass field camping with all the amenities - and the "dining cave" is an interesting feature!
Please do not stay if you are not a nature lover and respectful with nature or humans, this is a place to enjoy scenery and be quiet. Groups of people who speak loud shout as they are together is such a shame. Again if you need nature and noise stay out of this unique place.
