This was the one blight on our magical 2.5 month trip around Iceland, a difficult situation made very much worse by an uncaring and greedy hotel manager. This will be a fairly long review and I apologize but I want you to have helpful and balanced information.  I was really looking forward to my stay at Hotel Kria. After 2 months of traveling around Iceland, I decided to splurge on a hotel for $250/night, for a total of 8 nights, more than I paid at any of the 13 other hotels we've stayed in Iceland. I assumed that would mean it would be extra great with a few amenities... But in fact, aside from the restaurant, this hotel has no amenities whatsoever. No laundry, no gym, etc. I requested to use a needle and thread and they don't even have that! (I have stayed in 13 other properties in Iceland and almost all have supplied kits in the rooms, wish I'd grabbed one). I frequently asked myself what warranted charging more than almost everywhere else in the area, as it is truly a budget hotel with a nice restaurant. The WiFi did not work in our room in the mornings or evenings, the vast majority of the time no networks were available to connect. (It worked fine in the lobby and hallway and one time in the room in the afternoon; I suspect it works when no no one else in the building is using it) It was truly unusable and we depended on tethering our laptops to our phones to get anything done. The sink in our room didn't drain for 3+ minutes after washing hands and that was a pain when getting ready for bed or for the day. I was told it would be fixed but it wasn't, nor was the repair of the bathroom fan which didn't work. When I looked at Tripadvisor I noticed the price for the room is now $140/night and that is much closer to an appropriate price for a place like this. We ate here for dinner one night and had the Arctic char and the lamb and both were great, though breakfast is truly quite bad. Probably the worst or second worst of the places we've stayed on this trip. This is in no way a reflection of the staff's commitment to service the guests, nor their constant hardworking efforts. It is a failure of management to have the facility adequately staffed. At any given time, the buffet was out of all the major things at once: coffee, cups, spoons, eggs, etc. The eggs all appeared to have been overcooked a few days before and the bacon was basically raw. After the third day I couldn't bear to eat anything but toast. The staff here is really the only good thing about this hotel, notably the incredibly hard-working Romanian man at breakfast, and Alaina and Leo at reception were all particularly helpful. So I was completely dismayed by the treatment of the manager. Here's what happened... After the first night, my husband and I each had trouble sleeping because the beds were so uncomfortable. Now, every person is different and has different bed preferences, but my husband likes a soft bed and I like a firm one, so it was very odd that both of us were in actual pain from the beds. I asked if there was some sort of mat available to put on the bed but of course, no, they don't have that. After the second night, we woke in even greater pain and I asked to speak with the manager about maybe checking out early, as of course the #1 function of a hotel is to sleep, and how could we possibly go 8 nights without sleep. I was told I had to wait until the next day to speak with the manager, and so we did. Well, to be honest, I wish I had video of the encounter with the manager, as no owner would want this woman working for them in any sort of customer service role. I went into the situation completely calm, as I assumed the manager would care about our comfort and recognize that 8 nights is an unusually long booking, so let's part ways in a way where everyone is happy. I truly can't tell you the last time I was treated so condescendingly. She 100% did not care about any of the problems we were having, and only insisted all the problems were only our own. She even insisted that the internet worked fine and actually laughed at us multiple times and rolled her eyes when I showed her the internet speed test results. She said at first that she would require us to pay for 2 additional nights in order for her to refund us for 3. I said that was unacceptable, we've already paid for an additional day (because we had to wait a day to speak with her), plus we're paying an extra $100 on top of the going rate! After this awful conversation she finally said that it would be up to Orbitz, who I had booked through, and that if they said it was ok to refund us then it was ok by her. So I phoned Orbitz and they said it was no problem on their end, they just had to confirm with her -- but then she changed her tune and said we had to pay for one additional night. At this point, our beautiful sunny day in Vik was spoiled and we agreed to take the loss.  So I just can't recommend you stay here. Maybe you'd find the bed fine and maybe you don't eat breakfast and don't wash your hands and don't own an internet device so none of my issues would pertain to you. But I can tell you that should you have any issue whatsoever, this manager will not care one bit. Her short-term profit will be worth more to her than caring about the wellbeing of friendly, respectful guests who had already paid more than fairly.  After leaving, we checked into Hotel Vik (called Hotel Vik i Myrdal on some sites) and I highly recommend it. It is more reasonably priced and a superior hotel with a better breakfast. PS One review here mentions a sauna, but it must have been put on the wrong hotel's page, as there is no sauna at this hotel.

Brilliant, if not slightly small, rooms, lovely hotel and staff. Fantastic breakfast. Happy hour makes drinks very cheap and affordable for Iceland. Within walking distance from black sand beach, didn’t have dinner there so unsure on that.

Booked Hotel Kria for 2 nights on our anniversary trip to Iceland and days before our arrival they sent us an email stating that their WiFi is down and they were moving our hotel. “It’s an upgrade” they reassured us, but when I asked what the upgrade was the agent was unable to elaborate and told me to look at photos which looked unimpressive. Upon our arrival we were given a Mountain View room which we had booked except that the hotel Vik where they lived us us next to the mountain so basically looking at a rockface out of our window the entire day. The TV in the room is smaller than ours at home and there are no extra amenities. Definitely doesn’t look or feel like an upgrade. They need to stick to what they contractually promise! Would not recommend it and if I ever come back I will probably book an Airbnb .

Dear gypsy1946, First and foremost, thank you for having chosen the Hotel Kria as your place of residence. Your input has been very carefully reviewed and would like to sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused due to the unfortunate incident you experienced. An IT maintenance had to be scheduled on the date of your arrival and unfortunately we were obligated to relocate all bookings to the closest hotel of the same category. A relocation is very rarely happening and i wanted to promise you this was a necessary move and an isolated incident as we really love to welcome our guests. Please rest assured that it is our primary concern to live up to our guests' high expectations and needs. We are truly sorry if this did not happen in your case. All actions will be taken in order to prevent something similar from recurring in future. We really wish you could have had the same positive experience as the majority of our guests do and hope that you could reconsider you decision and stay with us again so you can experience the hospitality you should have. Sincerely, Leonidas Michailidis Front Office Manager

My husband and I visited Vik in the month of August 2021 to celebrate our Marriage Anniversary ..loved our stay at Vik. We were very tired as we were driving a very long way from Seydisfjordur to Vik for about 8hours non stop.We arrived late night restaurant was closed and we were starving. Alexandra the girl at the bar was exceptionally sweet and so charming she really made the night so relaxed after making a nice drink for us and giving us peanuts and snacks to subside our craving for food...Totally loved the staff...they were friendly and very sweet!
