This review is long overdue, but we stayed here for 2 weeks in early 2015...It was fantastic! Gerry had connections to a 30' boat with a guide (who built the boat) and his wife. We fished, slept in hammocks on board, relaxed, and enjoyed meals cooked onboard including freshly caught ceviche! The Hostel itself was also fantastic...Kitchin, basic pool, walking distance to town, it was great! Gerry showed us around town and even spent some time with us back in Manaus for a day!

Spent 1 week with Gerry in his nice hostel. Located near the airport just a couple of meters he was awaiting me with the barbecue grill already on. Spent most time in the pool having cold beer and Caipirinha, The rooms are clean, in the morning you will enjoy the birds giving their concert. Met some guys staying there for weeks, understandable at the rate of US$ 10 per night. Fligths are every Saturday from Manaus, paid US$ 120 return. Don't miss Sundays and holiday party at the huge beach in front of Barcelos.

First of all let me say that I had a longer stay in the hostel, so I’ve seen not only my own experience, but also the experience of other guests who came for shorter periods. The hostel is basic, but a clean and comfortable place where you can enjoy your time between jungle trips - reading a book in a hammock or drinking cold beer in the swimming pool. The location of Barcelos is in the middle of a vast wilderness off the beaten track – perfect starting point for Amazon exploration. The owner Gerry is super-enthusiastic about the jungle and super-friendly guy, who will make sure you have the best possible time. After I’ve spent time in Brasil and especially Amazon, where too many people see you as a walking wallet and only care about your gringo dollars, it’s very fresh experience to meet someone who puts in the first place the contact with his guests and the quality of his hospitality and his tours. He has a network of local guides and he is knowledgeable of places to visit and things to do. The moment you arrive in the hostel Gerry will give you instantly multiple ideas for activities in the very same day, and he’ll help you plan for the rest of your stay. He can help organize the best possible tours to suit your interests and your time. I’ve seen him create amazing action-packed 2 or 3 day programs for people in a rush, as well as extensive and complete tours of a week or more for people with more time on their hands. Whether your main interest is fishing, wildlife spotting, tasting jungle food, swimming and relaxing on a beach, photography or the crafts and traditions of the local communities, Gerry is the guy who can make it all happen. Hostel Barcelos is a place I’ll visit again – because of the various jungle experiences I’ve had there and because of Gerry.

I was really lucky to come across Gerry and his hostel whilst looking for a place to base an adventure from in the Amazon. He provides safe, clean, basic, good value accommodation (with a pool) close to the airport, in Barcelos. If you are looking to plan a trip in the Amazon and are completely disgusted by the thought of paying thousands of pounds to a big company, Gerry, is a man who can really help you out. Gerry speaks a number of languages including Portuguese, has great rapport with the locals, likes a bit of adventure and knows the score about town in Barcelos. If you are down to earth and up for a bit of a laugh, you will get on well with Gerry and I'm sure he will help you out (as he did with me) with tips and advice. I will definitely be back to the hostel, big thanks to Gerry for assisting us with an epic adventure!

Gerry's "Hostel Barcelos" really does rate as excellent. It is a pleasant but unexceptional small detached house with a swimming pool in the back yard and, beyond that, a block of three en-suite bedrooms and a kitchen. Its real asset though, is Gerry himself. The consumate host, he makes a determined effort to understand his guests' needs and then fulfil them. It is about 100 metres from the airport terminal, although this doesn't matter noise-wise as there are only about half a dozen aircraft movements a week. If you are coming from the river port, it is about 15-20 minutes' walk or five minutes by cab. Just ask to be taken to the red house (casa vermelha) opposite the airport. We turned up at nearly midnight, a day before he expected us, and he immediately showed his consideration for the other guests by sitting us down for a drink and a chat in an area where our conversations wouldn't disturb anyone. The place is self-catering, although all the time we were there, meals were a communal affair, prepared and eaten by Gerry and the guests. There is a large barbeque which is lit and available on demand, and we enjoyed several good parties there, where guests at the hostel mixed with neighbours and with the handful of ex-pats living in the town. There is no set list of activities provided by the hostel. Gerry will discuss your interests and suggest outings based on them. These can range from a trip to the beach (which, like most things here, involves a boat ride) to three or four day jungle treks and sojourns with indigenous people in their villages. Equally, no-one will think it odd if you prefer to chill out by the pool and drink caipirinhas all day. It is a fifteen minute walk to the town centre, but Gerry has a selection of bicycles which can be borrowed. You can get pretty much anywhere in town by bike in a little over five minutes. In fact our only criticism was not of something over which Gerry has any control. Just be warned - don't expect more than the most basic of slow internet access even in the town's "internet cafe". Just about adequate for collecting emails, but no more.
