We loved this old jail, which now is a wonderful hotel nearby Helsinki center. Friendly staff, beautiful rooms (Superior) and a special overall feeling. You can still see the history everywhere. Very good breakfast! Easy parking in front of the hotel (21e) for 24 h. Also easy to use public transportation to arrive. We will go back for sure!

Wife and I were here for 4 nights in June. We arrived at Helsinki central station from St. Petersburg. The hotel was easy to reach from the central station. Basically just take Tram 4/4T and the stop was right at the entrance of the hotel. Our check in process was wonderful. The lady that helped us was friendly and super welcoming. She went down all the right cookie cutter list of questions. She thanked us for our elite status and continued loyalty. She told us about the welcome gift without us asking. and we got a brief on the history of the hotel, received our keys and were on our way to the room. Our room was comfortable but small even in European standard. There were no instructions on anything in the room. Usually the room comes with at least a booklet on what to dial for reception, room service...etc. But there was none. I basically found out how to reach reception from the emergency escape route card posted behind the door. In tiny prints it says: dial 9 for front desk if you need help with emergencies. The safe in the room did not work, and after telling the front desk, they tried to fix it but couldn't. they offered to switch our room, but it wasn't a big deal so we declined. For the next 4 nights, the safe was never fixed. WiFi worked great in the room with VPN. Since we were so far north, the sun never really set during summer. and the curtains in the room does not black out anything, which forced us to use our eye masks. We ate a lot of supermarket bought salads for dinner, but there isn't space in the hotel or the room to lounge and eat for 2 people. Bathroom amenities isn't all that great. The spout for the conditioner was broken. The shower door isn't connected all the way, so after taking the shower the whole area around it will be wet. We do love the location. It was located in the residential area with a super convinient 4/4T tram that took us into town. We downloaded the HSL app on our phones and it was easy to use and we bought tickets that way for all public transports. The hotel is a 3 minute walk to the Viking Line ferry to Tallinn. We hopped onto the 10:30am boat to Tallinn and hop back onto the boat at 6PM had a great 5+ hours day trip to Tallinn from Helsinki. There was a great coffee shop called Johan & Nystrom which we basically gone to almost daily about 8 minutes walk from the hotel. The main Helsinki cathedral was about a 15 minute walk from the hotel if you don't want to take the tram. Overall it was a unique hotel converted from an old jail cells. But we will most likely not be back because of how small and inefficient (they don't utilized the small space very well) the rooms were.

Dear frankl490, Thank you for your review. First of all I am happy to hear that the location, this beautiful area of Katajanokka and especially our service here in our extraordinary hotel was good. I am sorry to hear that the room itself didn't meet your expectations. The rooms have been made by combining former historical prison cells. I am sorry to hear the problems faced in the room, as the safe etc weren't properly fixed, as those should have been. I hope you would be able to retunr one day in order to have a better experience, as it's nice to note that you had a great time in our great city of Helsinki. With kind regards, Sami Joutsenvuo Chief Concierge Hotel Katajanokka

We booked the Hotel Katajanokka because we were looking for something different and we were not disappointed. While it’s not far from the main area of the city it is a little removed from the tourist hotspots so not busy or crowded at all. The hotel features a great courtyard to enjoy the afternoon sun and a drink from the courtyard bar, perfect! The room was larger than we expected (having experienced in other European hotels) with a large bathroom. Everything you expect from a modern hotel but this one has an interesting history, make sure you check out the original cells in the basement.

I stayed at Hotel Katajanokka during a recent visit to Helsinki. As you've probably read it's a converted prison and they've done a fabulous job keeping the features that make it recognisable as a prison but making it look beautiful. The location is great, in a quiet neighbourhood that is a fairly comfortable walk into the middle of the city or grab the tram which stops right outside the hotel. Rooms are spacious, great bathrooms, quit and comfy beds for a good night's sleep. Staff are warm and friendly. Overall I was very impressed and would thoroughly recommend.

Dear FrankRizz0, Thank you for your kind review. I am veryhappy to hear that you liked the way the old prison has been converted into a modern boutique hotel. The design was done together with the national board of antiquities. The idea was to honor the history while being a good hotel. I am happy you liked it. It's great that you had a nice and enjoyable stay overall. Welcome again! With kind regards, Sami Joutsenvuo Chief Concierge Hotel Katajanokka
