Having not been to Greece for such a long time, we took the plunge and booked a last-minute holiday to Skiathos and stayed at Filokalia in Achladies.
Owned and run by Alkis and his brother, this is very much a family affair. The pool bar is managed superbly by Shellina, an English lady who makes the most fabulous food from her extensive menu with very competitive prices.
By day there is a beautiful pool to enjoy and many other comfortable sitting areas. The gardens are kept nicely manicured and the friendly room girls ensure that rooms are sparkly clean. By evening the bar area fills with guests returning from their lazy day in or busy day out, background music playing, an extensive drinks and cocktail menu and the occasional Greek dance by Alkis! Food is available until late.
The apartments are in the small area of Achladies, in a ‘normal’ season has a number of bars and restaurants. Bus stop 10 is at the bottom of the short lane and the bus will take you as far as Koukounaries one way or Skiathos Town the other way. Very cheap fares and a most scenic coastal road, it’s a great way to get around to the many beaches. Of course, taxis are also available and the staff here will order one for you and even make restaurant reservations for you, many are personally recommended.
We will not hesitate to return here, in fact our planned 2 week stay has already been extended by another 10 days! I think we’ve found our very favourite Greek home from home on this beautiful island.

Another fantastic holiday here at the Filokalia apartments. These apartments are family owned. Great care is taken to look after the apartments and grounds. Everyone is so helpful and friendly.
Shellina runs the pool bar/ restaurant by day, and works very hard all day to look after everybody’s needs. Meals are always prepared with ‘love’ … a great choice of simple English food from pizzas, English breakfasts, freshly made salads. By night the bar is open for residents until the last one leaves basically.
The pool area has a good number of sun beds and lots of chairs / tables with plenty shade. Holiday makers are welcomed back year after year.
I took my mum who is 86 years, so I requested a low level room with only a few steps to negotiate. Many rooms require walking up rather a steep slope or flights of steps, so it is important to request a low room if necessary. Everything will be done to accommodate.
Achladies is a lovely location. The apartments are a short easy walk away from a beautiful sandy beach where there are a small number of bars / restaurants. The water taxi leaves Achladies for Skiathos town on a regular basis.
We always hire quads or a jeep, however the bus is only down the road which takes you to any of the beaches on the south side of the island, and town.
This is a great apartment and location to take children. Pack very little ! It’s very casual.
It’s my favourite place and I’m going back in a few weeks time …. I can’t wait.
Thank you to everyone at Filokalia for making us so welcome time after time …. See you very soon !

Spent two weeks in September at these lovely apartments. Really well situated off the main road with just a short walk to the bus stops and the local beach. Very quiet location with a nice pool and clean rooms. The pool bar is run by a lovely lady called Shellina who can't do enough to make your stay enjoyable. The breakfasts and lunches are very reasonably priced and delicious. In the evening the owner Alkis takes over and he too is a very good host and makes you very welcome. Would highly recommend but would perhaps suggest not for anyone with walking difficulties.

I booked a last minute weeks holiday at Filokalia, we stayed in one of the studios which was basic but spotless clean & was adequately equipped for 2 people, The setting of Filokalia is very picturesque, it is only a 5-10 minute walk to the lovely beach & a short walk to the bus stop where a regular bus service operates.
An added bonus at Filokalia is Shelena who is like ‘wonder woman’ she knows all the guests & provides a personal service, also regular visits from the owner Demi & her gorgeous little boys makes it feel like 1 big happy family.
We would definitely stay here again

I cannot recommend these apartments enough. This is our second visit, and we'll definitely be visiting next year!
The apartments are really well looked after. Everyone who works there is passionate about their work, from the owners, cleaners, gardeners, and Shellina; who is an amazing host!
Shellina looks after everybody, everyday, around the pool area, preparing breakfasts and snacks. She even remembered from last year, that our son really liked her homemade coleslaw with his burger!
The apartments themselves are exceptionally clean and comfortable.
The pool area also, and there are plenty sunshades.
We love Shellina, and we love these apartments. Achladies is a lovely resort with a lovely sandy beach. I have just booked for my Son, daughter in law, and grandson of 4 years to visit next May 2021. Book NOW I would say!!

What a wonderfully friendly location to stay. Fantastic help and kind service from everyone. Apartments are very good and well looked after. Food is very good and bar offers a great variety of drinks. Many holidaymakers have been many times before the atmosphere and location is so good. Close to bus stop 10. Excellent value.

Judging by the reviews this place has some big fans, trouble is you have to pay extra to use them! The 10 euros a day charge for the aircon was just one of a number of problems with the apartments. They are not really apartments, more like hotel rooms with a barely adequate microwave size oven/hob. There was also no TV and non-existent WiFi in the room. Some of the apartments are quite inaccessible with residents saying how difficult it was to drag cases to their rooms. The location is good, a shortish walk to the bus stop and beach. All in all, it’s ok, friendly enough but not quite as marvellous as the reviews would have you believe!

What we liked:
Well organised and aesthetically pleasing development, comprehensively finished to good standard architecturally amongst a lovely garden.
Welcoming and helpful staff.
10 mins to beach and 5 to regular bus route
Pleasant room, pretty balcony, good shower and kitchenette.

What would have improved our experience:
Less noise from domestic staff from 7.30 ish onwards.
Not finding the smoke alarm in our room had no battery and bore a sticker 'Replace by Mar 2016'.
A less dangerous road. You need to cross the main coastal road regularly for beach, buses, bars, restaurants. The road from Filokalia junctions with this road on the apex of a long sweeping bend, which through traffic takes at some speed. Vehicles bear down on you very rapidly. My suggestion is to treat this road with considerable caution, and that it is best not mixed with alcohol. Some form of moderate traffic calming here can only benefit the local tourism industry in the long run.

We stayed at these apartments as part of an Island Hopping Experience with Olympic Holidays. The room was lovely, as is the pool and bar area. Staff were friendly & nothing was too much trouble. The food & drinks are very reasonably priced, which is handy because it is set back from the main road, which doesn't have too much ny way of amenities. However, there is a superb bus link throughout Skiathos.

What a lovely pretty hotel. Very friendly, helpful staff. Lovely breakfasts cooked by Shellina. Nice pool area in beautifully kept gardens. Bus stop to Skiathos town a short walk down the lane or take the water taxi from Achlides beach. Rooms basic but very clean with all necessary amenities. Don't take notice of the 2 stars, it's definitely worth more. Would recommend Filokalia.

Thank you for your response. In the mean-time I have actually booked the Xanthi Studios in Kolios, but thank you anyway.

In my opinion you don't need a car. Skiathos has basically only got one proper road going west to east, all other 'roads' are basically rough tracks or single track roads. Buses and taxis are very good and cheap.

The beach at achilides is very good for kids usually calm and not steeply shelving. Bus is at the bottom of the road and there are loads of good beaches on the island
