On arrival at the hotel we ushered straight back out to have our bags sprayed with cold water (the chap doing this wasn't outside but inside chatting) we were advised to wear masks in accordance in with Greek Regulations in the Reception area which of course were already in place but was surprised to see two very much older residents sat in the reception area without masks......
The Room was big and spacious and comfortably accommodated us all but was very dark, dated and in need of a revamp.
Breakfast was served in a dark & too warm breakfast room on the first floor which is very disappointing considering the hotel has the most fantastic rooftop terrace on offer but int the evenings only , the usual Greek breakfast offerings but brought to you by the only waiter who is doing his best under the circumstances but we felt very rushed and under pressure to get on with it and get out.
Its such a shame as we are regular visitors to Corfu Town and were very much looking forward to staying at the Cavalieri we have visited so many times but we won't rush back i'm afraid.
This is historic hotel is perfectly situated to enjoy all that Corfu Town has to offer.
Shortly before our stay, I had read various Reviews online to know what to expect.
Many of the reviews indicated that the Hotel was in need of a renovation,
Once We arrived, we certainly could understand the negative comments.
The Hotel may be Historical in its own right, however guests should not be expected to excuse it’s outdated condition.
The carpets in the rooms are decades old, the beds and mattresses are worn out. The furnishings are tattered, worn, cheaply made and not in anyway to be confused with cherished antiques.
We first entered our Room which smelled old and like cigarette smoke.
The bathrooms have pedestal sinks, which absolutely offer no storage for toiletries. There are No hooks for hanging wet towels or robes. We literally moved a small shelving unit from the bedroom into the bathroom so that we could have a place to store make up, toiletries etc
Our toilet was installed at an awkward angle because it barely fit in the bathroom.
The weather was hot the whole time we were in Corfu and the Air Conditioning broke down after a few days and was unoperational for the remainder of our stay.
The TV provided the very basic package of Channels, which only one was offered in English.
The breakfast that was included was exactly the same for a week. There were two cheap, household toasters that worked very inefficient. These toasters had to sometimes service a room full of guests; often causing a back log of people waiting to use the toaster.
You would think that a Hotel would have a commercial sized toaster?
There was no ice buckets provided in the rooms, no ice machines available. The guests would have to request ice, then be instructed to bring their glasses to have a staff member fill them with a few ice cubes.
The were minimal electrical outlets and no USB ports to charge your devices.
This Hotel is in desperate need of a Renovation and efficiency updates to provide their guests with a satisfactory experience.
I have stayed in old historical hotels before, but this hotel uses their historical label as an excuse not to renovate, refresh or update with todays standards of comfort and efficiencies.
The Hotel Cavalieri has so much potential, however I would not recommend this hotel until much needed improvements are made.
2) The only positive thing about this hotel is the view from its roof bar. But, at least when I went to it, I was nearly rejected by the waiter as I just wanted to make photos.
The waiter, who was very impolite to me, as far as I understood, pretended the Covid protocol, to prevent me to do photos. But I was wearing a mask and the 2 times I went up for photos, the roof top was nearly empty (with just 2 tables accupied which of course I avoided). Of course the probable real reason was that I did not come on the roof bar to spend my money there !
We chose to have dinner on the roof terrace for the view, which again is spectacular. We found our waiter, Nikos, to be charming and attentive and the food to be good and certainly value for money. The service was relaxed, judging by other reviews if you want a quick bite to eat this is probably not the place, but, if you want to spend a couple of hours enjoying good food and drink in a great location then do visit.
Again struggling to understand some of the other reviews of the breakfast. We found it to be of a very good standard with lots of choice.
As others have mentioned, a lovely old building in a great location and we had a stunning view of the sea and old fortress. Very dated and no real communal areas on the ground floor, and no bar.
The dining room for breakfast is small and nothing special. Breakfast a huge disappointment, cooked breakfast looked like it had been sat for hours, no fresh fruits to have with yoghurts. Only tinned peaches or tinned fruit salad, so disappointing. Hot drinks also not freshly made, had to press a button on a machine.
As for the rooms, if we hadn’t had the lovely view I would have asked the travel company to move us. Very dated decor, awful carpet and the bathrooms very shabby with badly repaired grouting and chipped fittings.
I had expected proper air conditioning in a 4 star hotel but there was just a unit by the bedroom door that didn’t seem to work and it was hard to sleep.
Such a shame, whoever owns the hotel needs to invest in a major refurbishment as it should be a stunning, popular hotel in that location. They should also look at the staffing as they were not warm or welcoming.
