We rented a car at the Heraklion airport to drive a little over an hour to Rethymno. Upon our arrival the manager explained to us that no breakfast would be served but that all the breakfast items would be in our apartment for self service. Also the room cleaning schedule was reduced and we were not allowed to be in the apartment -not even on the balcony- whilst the cleaning took place.
We were so pleasantly surprised with our "Executive Suite" (1 bedroom). It was bright and spacious, perfectly laid out with a gorgeous balcony. The view was just stunning, we couldn't get enough of those sunsets. The pool looked nice too but we didn't use it. Sun chairs were always available. Obviously the hotel was half full at the best.
Although it is close to a main road any noise from it was drowned out by the sound of the waves. We are not beach people but we watched some go into the water right across from the street. To go to a real beach you would need a car. On the other side it was just a short walk to the charming city center with plenty of shops and restaurants.
We didn't like that we had to make our own breakfast as my husband likes his fried eggs, bacon and so on. We always cleaned up the cooking mess ourselves because we were not sure if the cleaning ladies would take care of it. There was a dishwasher but not enough dishes to fill it and it seemed to be a waste to run it just about empty. It was nice though to have the option to prepare a lunch or a dinner once in a while for ourselves.
The staff was very friendly and catered for us very well. We would have loved to stay longer than the 2 weeks we had booked. This is a place where one could spend months on end!

We have recently returned from 2 weeks at the Macaris Suites & Spa. We had a fabulous holiday and our executive suite with 2 bedrooms was even better than expected. There were lots of nice little touches, like insect screens on the sliding doors and electric shutters to keep the room dark. The kitchen was very well equipped for this type of apartment, with a proper job, oven, dishwasher and fridge freezer. The sofa bed was comfortable for our 15-year-old son and we had a great bathroom with a huge spa shower cubicle and a second separate toilet and sink. It was thoroughly cleaned every day to a good standard. The terrace was huge and had some shaded areas and some sunny areas and the full sea view was stunning. The pool area is quite small and did sometimes get busy, but mostly we were able to get sun beds even although we were a party of 5.
The location is slightly odd as it is in more of a residential/commercial area (which we knew), but we actually liked this. Rethymno is a bustling city as well as a tourist resort and we enjoyed seeing that side of the city and shopping with the locals. The old town is about 15 minutes walk, but it’s pretty flat and we felt very safe walking back late at night. The town beach is a bit further (another 5-10 minutes) but you could get a bus or taxi. Shop around for sun beds, the cheapest we found was 3.5 euro for a bed and they don’t seem to charge for umbrellas.
There are 2 decent supermarkets within 500m of Macaris in the direction of the town and prices are reasonably similar to the UK. The closest one is smaller but it seemed to be open at all hours of the day and night. Turning left out of Macaris, away from town, there is an area about 10 minutes walk away with boutique hotels and some fantastic restaurants which seem to be used more by the locals. We visited Prima Plora twice, it has a very upmarket feel and is right on the seafront. The food was excellent (especially the sushi) and it felt very reasonably priced for the quality of the food.
The staff at Macaris deserve a special mention. Manolis on reception was really kind and very helpful and the staff at breakfast and the pool bar were very friendly and gave us recommendations for some good places to eat and visit.

Fabulous hotel ,restaurant was not open due to covid but the fridge in our rooms were stocked up with food and bottles of water we actually didn't want for anything if you needed some replacement just had to ask at reception and it was done .
Rooms were stocked with clean towels and bedding for you to change when needed .
Pool area lovely clean .
It is about a 15,minute walk from the harbour but taxis were available for 5,euros.
We hired a car which I think if you want to get about is the better option.
Highly recommend

My partner and I stayed in Macaris Suite and Spa for 10 nights and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Rethmynon. The hotel is located in more of a commercial area but is an easy walk to the old town. A taxi is 5euro to the old port either and they come within minutes. The hotel rooms are extremely spacious and finished to a high standard. The balcony was what made the room, it was probably the largest balcony we've ever had in a hotel and looked out at the sea. You could spend an entire day relaxing on the balcony! The rooms were cleaned daily and were kept spotless. The pool is perfect and was never hard to get a sun bed. All of the staff were so friendly and efficient. Highly recommend this hotel and we will definitely be back.

We stayed in a superior 2 bedroom. It was a beautiful apartment - modern clean, with a huge balcony and a sea view. The cleaners did an excellent job and cleaned every day. The breakfast was very good. Maybe too much cream for someone trying to watch their weight - fried mushrooms in cream, and I could be wrong but the porrige tasted suspiciously creamy 🙂. The pool area is lovely. The pool is a bit small if you're a serious swimmer but the sea across the road is great for swimming. Without a doubt the best restaurants in rethymno are also across the road. It took us a few days to even notice them as they are not visible from the road and don't all have a web presence but the setting is stunning - overlooking the sea and the menus are very high end. If you are interested in a spa treatment you need to book well in advance
The staff are very friendly and helpful. We loved our stay at macaris suites and would definitely recommend.

Cannot fault …From front desk ..to all staff and especially the maids who kept the rooms spotless . We ate In restaurant a few times something we don’t usually do but due an immobility problem from pulling knee , the food is excellent and not much dearer than the tavernas .
It’s a 15 min walk into old town , beware the slippery flag stones … I wasn’t the only person to come a cropper from the hotel … wear decent shoes not flip flops .
Beach is 30 min walk … sun beds are €10 per set ….
Thankyou to all staff for a superb stay and if we are ever back in the area we will come back and stay 🥰

Fabulous suite hotel suitable for families and couples alike. The whole complex is spotlessly clean and well maintained from top to bottom. The staff make this place particularly special, they are all professional, very friendly and can’t do enough for you. The spa is fabulous, one of the best I’ve visited (and I’ve visited a lot!), the indoor pool is small but has a ‘swimming machine’ so you can swim against the current. Again the staff are amazing and the spa treatments are cheap compared to UK rates. The outdoor pool area is beautifully relaxing with comfy loungers.
We had a two bedroom executive suite on the top floor which was MASSIVE and very comfortable.
I only have two small criticisms, the hairdryer in the bathroom is dreadful, a large box on the wall with a vacuum style umbilical similar to a public pool dryer. Secondly, there is no on site mini market despite what it says on the website but there is a very good mini market only 500m away.
The complex is in a slightly dowdy part of town and a 20 min walk to the vibrant centre but it was safe enough.

We stayed at the hotel for twelve days and enjoyed it very much. The staff at the reception, in the restaurant and pool bar was dedicated, friendly and easy to talk with. The apartment was spacious with a beautiful view and the cleaning was superb. We had breakfast included and appreciated the high-quality buffet and a variety of hot and cold drinks to choose from. We highly recommend Macaris Suites and Spa.

We were moved to here by our holiday company 2 weeks before flying after our original hotel was deemed unsatisfactory. Wow! What a wonderful place to stay. You won’t be disappointed. The hotel is immaculate, the suites very spacious and comfortable with everything you could want and more. Spectacular sea views from all balconies. The facilities are amazing from poolside, spa, bars and very good food options. The staff are so helpful, friendly and nothing is too much trouble from reception staff to bar staff and housekeepers. So family friendly. Great location about 15-20 min stroll into Rethymno old town. This is definitely on our list to come back to. Thank you Macaris Team 🥰

We lived in a executive 1 room apartment on the 7 floor. Beautiful wiew to the sea, great bed, nice bed, and most of all: the most nice staff everywhere . Outstanding service . I forgot a dress and they just send it to me without charging me:)
If you have rented a car you can park for free just outside the hotel.
I recommend this hotel if you want a super place to stay in Rethymnon

SAS asked a question Feb 2023
Cromarty, United Kingdom
Do you pay taxes to stay at the hotel

I travelled in April so I dont know what the sun bed situation would be in June. The sea is right across the road, you will see it on any level if you are at the front of the hotel. Perhaps there is more balcony space for the higher price? Yes it is walkable into town, probably 15 or 20 minutes depending on whether you have small kids or older people with you. Though I would say there is a bus stop on the same side as the hotel which is v. convenient and the bus comes every 15 minutes. While there is a path you have to constantly look out for cars/bikes pulling out of garages, petrol stations and side roads, not a very easy walk if you have kids, fine if just adults. Have a lovely time, the staff in the hotel are very gentle and lovely people. Cretans are friendly and helpful. Bon Voyage
