The Byzantine Hotel is just inside the gate opposite the public garden. There’s a sign and it’s not hard to find. However, the door had a sign saying to call Nickos and a phone number. Fortunately there was a young guy who spoke a bit of English who gave us a key (never even asked our names or to see... More

This gorgeous hotel is tucked away in the old quarter and serves the best Cretan breakfast ever, in their photogenic court yard. Easy access to Thursday markets and evening entertainment in the square. Thanks for the wonderful hospitality.

We always end our holiday by staying in Rethymnon for a few days , and of course always stay here . I would have said that you cannot improve on perfection but the ever busy Nikos has repainted the whole hotel , retiled bathrooms and installed new plumbing . Came back one afternoon and sat in the courtyard reading a... More

We stayed as a group of friends and were really glad we booked this hotel. Its location is absolutely perfect, quiet street in the Rethymno old town, bus stop just a few steps from the house. The owner, Nicos, was very nice and offered us a cup of coffee or melon anytime we went by. He also tried hard to... More

This is a top up on previous reviews .First , I incorrectly described this as a Venetian building .I was wrong , it is older than that and in fact was once a Byzantine guard house, how cool is that ?Second , facilities have improved with a fridge and flat screen TV in every room now .Also , the owner... We stayed only for one night in Rethymnon but felt very lucky to have chosen such an elegant and beautifully restored hotel. Quite lovely. Centrally located on the edge of the Old Town but far enough away so there wasn't too much noise. Breakfast was continental and very sweet. Polite and friendly hosts and would definitely stay again.

Tried to contact this hotel four times via e-mail at info@hotelbyzantine.com with zero response. Unable to get answers to the questions we had (about single beds versus double beds) and hotel website totally vague (not specifying bedding and also not mentioning if breakfast is included in rate displayed or not), therefore we will choose another more responsive hotel. Wasted time... More

This building is a renovated Venetian house and a work in progress by the owner .Since our last visit he has tidied up and opened a patio on the third floor .I am sitting there now.To my right is the main town car park , 50 yards away but no sound reaches us here .To my left is a disused... More

I cannot add anything more to the great reviews already written. This is a old mansion , lovingly restored by Mr. Niccos. If you have the time, spend some time talking to Mr. Niccos. He is a good man, loves interesting conversation, and a wonderful, delightful host. Driving Direction: If you are driving from Hania or Herakalion, I would suggest... More
