Between the tiny fishing village of Plaka and the increasingly chic port of Elounda on the island of Crete, Blue Palace looks out across its own private beach towards the incomparable view of Spinalonga Island, a National Monument of Greece. The setting is one of virtually unspoilt, wild grandeur, because Blue Palace is so perfectly assimilated into its surroundings. How often is it that you find yourself swimming in crystal clear waters and gazing at an island, only a few hundred meters away, which is a National Monument? Cobalt waters and uninterrupted views of the UNESCO-nominated Spinalonga Island make this setting the most captivating. Unmistakably Greek, the fresh rooms and suites reflect a relaxed yet refined island aesthetic with natural materials, eclectic pieces of Greek art, a color palette drawn from the surrounding environment, and a detail seasoned with historical detail.

Upon finding ourselves on a flight to Heraklion, we decided to book at Blue Palace for a 5 night stay. Check-in was quite efficient, but it was when we enquired about an upgraded room that things changed somewhat. When I asked about the price, I was assured that the upgrade would be complimentary. After we reviewed the room, I was informed that this was a mistake and there would be a substantial fee for the upgraded room. We were assured this would be worth it due to the dedicated space on the beach, lunch vouchers, and the like. I'll put it down to a language barrier, but these benefits were also over-represented. Admittedly, when I took this up with the manager, they reduced the upgrade fee somewhat. Beyond that, the resort was quite lovely. Our room was lovely, and the (properly) private pool was a nice touch. The standout, I would say, are the restaurants. We took all our meals at the resort. In all cases, food and service was excellent. There is also a wide variety of different cuisines to choose from - traditional, Italian, Asian, etc. If you can, try them all. The more upmarket breakfast restaurant is also very good. Furthermore, sunset drinks alongside the pool are a must. We enjoyed our stay here after we got over the initial challenges. In the future, I would book for a premier room as the standard rooms are quite ordinary.

My favourite place in the world…. We stayed at the Blue Palace every August for 15 beautiful years. I celebrated big birthdays here with dear friends. For me the most beautiful hotel. Flights booked for 2025 I eagerly awaited the release of rooms to the booking system. And here comes the BUT….. the hotel as it was…. Is no more 🥲 The main hotel, on the right of the entry road, is being refurbished, sold to a new group will open again in 2025. The hotel on the left of the road will be The Blue Palace “boutique” hotel. I am sure that it will be lovely, but the features so adored are in the “refurbished” side. The prices…. I won’t quote them here are off the radar…:more like 7 star Dubai. And for a 16 time returning loyal guest, the price quoted was eye watering! Initially I thought it was a weekly rate, not a per room per night rate, and this was for a valued guest. So very very sadly… the Blue Palace, for me, is no more🥲

We stayed here four years ago and were very pleased with the hotel location (close to Plaka and Elounda), our room (a sea view with pool), the food arrangements (buffet breakfasts and evening meals included in our half board package) and the general ambience (set on a hillside with glorious views of Spinalonga and Mirrabello Bay). Good enough reasons to revisit. On our return in October 2023, we, once again, had a sea view room with a pool, but in a different part of the hotel grounds. The view from the room was stunning with Spinalonga right in front of us. We watched the boats delivering visitors to the island many times whilst we were having our coffee on our terrace. However, one significant thing had changed. The evening meals were no longer buffet style. Now you had to book to eat at one of the several themed restaurants onsite. This might seem like an improvement in quality but, as we were half board, we could only choose from a restricted menu unless we wanted to pay a supplement (quite often a costly one for certain dishes). The other change was the use of a digitised menu on an app which you had to install on your mobile or tablet. (although, if you hadn’t downloaded it you would be presented with a hotel tablet with the app installed). On the day of our arrival I had problems installing the app, probably because the wifi in our room was, at best, very poor and my phone was using local 4G signal most of the time. The wifi would drop out frequently and on many occasions we had to log back into the system. This meant I was using my roaming allowance which had cost implications for me. This normally would not be to much of an inconvenience but you had to use the app to reserve your table at all of the onsite restaurants. I eventually installed the app which happened whilst we were in one of the restaurants where the wifi signal was much stronger. We did mention this at Reception and we were basically fobbed off with the receptionist saying we needed to do certain things to our phones to make them work properly. This has never happened an any other hotel we have stayed at, and when we were in a strong signal area of the hotel our phones worked normally In all of our other dealings with the receptionists they were very attentive and helpful. This was especially the case when we wanted our boarding passes printed because the guests’ computer printer was out of order at the time. Our dining experience was pretty mixed. The Buffet breakfast was excellent with a large choice of hot and cold food enough to please all tastes and appetites. When it comes to the restaurants however, it was a mixed bag. We ate at the Blue Door (Traditional Greek) restaurant three times, Asia Deep Blue (Asian/fusion) and Isola (Italian) twice. Generally, the portion sizes were very large (a couple of times too large for us). Not all the food was to our taste, with one example being served “herb” ice cream in the Asian/Fusion restaurant without any information on the menu that it was not normal flavoured ice cream. But, we still come back to the fact that the majority of food choices we would normally have made carried a supplement. We were not prepared for this and it spoilt our stay, food being an important part of our holidays. I must say the lamb chops served to me in the Blue Door restaurant were great (and supplement free). Another disappointment was the lack of any entertainment. On our previous visit on one evening there were a group of Greek Dancers who provided very good and amusing entertainment. They performed in the Buffet Restaurant (probably the only area big enough for them to dance). We were informed by the Concierge that the entertainment finished in September. If the food arrangements remain the as they currently are it is unlikely we will return. This is a shame because the hotel has a lot of other things going for it, especially the location.

Ive been returning to this establishment every 2-3 years since my first visit 10 years ago. Top location with stunning views of sunrise , all rooms see to Spinaloga which is so beautiful to look at all hours of day. Great service from staff and very good restaurants within the hotel. Stafff can help on suggesting local restaurants in the nearby villages for a more traditional cretan hospitality. You must spend some time at the spa !

Where do I begin? When staying at The Blue Palace, you are in lap of luxury and comfort. We enjoyed a beautiful suite with a private infinity pool overlooking the water and Spinalonga. The beds were luxurious and the rest of the suite was beautifully appointed. The mini bar was anything but mini! It was stocked to the brim. The service was impeccable and the food off the charts.

Had a wonderful trip to Blue Palace. All the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, the food was gorgeous, the location stunning and the facilities were great (multiple pools, numerous sun beds, spa, water sports centre, multiple restaurants and bars). Special shout out to Petros and the team at Creta's Happy Divers. A super professional and friendly team that looked after every bit of the dive so all you had to do was turn up! For someone who hadn't dived for a while I was made to feel comfortable and at ease.

This resort is absolutely beautiful. We had a small room with a small balcony. We wished we could have had a room with a pool. The view was beautiful of the sea and some of the resort. The breakfast was plentiful. The resort was beautiful with several pools and a private beach. The staff was cordial. The doorman always helped. We would stay here again.

Beautiful hotel which we never tire of. We have stayed here 8 times over 12 years and it still has the magic. The staff who seem to be there year after year are fantastic. In the restaurants the staff always remember past customers which is a sign of well trained staff. We eat at all the restaurants and haven’t had a bad meal. Our favourites are Asia Blue and Blue door. Rena , Harris and all the staff in blue door are always lovely , friendly and efficient. Such a simple menu but always very good quality. We love to see them every year. All the beach employees are incredibly efficient and good natures. My only negative comment is really to do with ‘progress’ you never Really get to know the reception staff because everything is done on an app now ie booking restaurants , checking in . Pre Covid the hotel was far more friendly and personal. Many thanks to everyone and we hope to visit again soon although there were whisperings around the hotel that all was changing and that the hotel won’t be the same in the future.

This was our sixth visit to the Blue Palace as we have loved all our previous stays at the hotel. We paid a premium to stay here as we wanted a holiday somewhere special to mark some important life events and recover from the loss of some very special people in our lives. Very little had changed, which was reassuring. The standards of service are still very high. Everyone who works at the hotel is professional yet still warm and friendly. The standard of cleanliness at the hotel is very high and housekeeping is fantastic. Our Superior Bungalow room, whilst in a slightly different location to the ones we had occupied previously, was exactly the same with a fabulous view of Spinalonga. We did notice that some parts of the hotel are starting to show their age. Nothing too obvious, just little things like the odd wobbly cobble and wonky fixtures and fittings. My husband was quite taken aback by the men's toilets in the Arsenli. He reported toilet cubicles not locking and one of the door handles fell off. These things aside, we still enjoyed the hotel facilities just as much as we had in our previous visits. The spa is fabulous and I had one of the best facials ever. The atmosphere in the Arsenli picked up when the DJ was in residence. The most disappointing aspect of our visit this time was the food. If we had only eaten breakfast and not visited any of the hotel's restaurants we would most likely have given the hotel a 5 star rating. Breakfast is fantastic. The choice of food is immense. They have gone all out to try to cater to as many tastes and dietary requirements as possible. We were also pleased to learn that breakfast service had been extended to 11am, so we could enjoy a lie in and a lazy brunch. Unfortunately, our experience of two of the hotel's restaurants did not impress. I was very ill after a meal at Asia Deep Blue. We dined at this restaurant multiple times when we first stayed at the hotel in 2010. Back then the food was amazing and one of our favourites was the Tempura Prawns. On our return visits to the hotel this beautiful restaurant seemed to have fallen out of favour with hotel guests and was deserted, so it was lovely to see it full of life again, so much so we could only get an 8.30pm booking. We felt very rushed and we were instructed to choose from the menu on the app. Personally we hate this as it cheapens the whole dining experience. The Tempura Prawns were not the same standard as we remembered. They looked very uniform in appearance and the batter was not light and crispy. We suspected they'd been bought in. Our Teriyaki Salmon was a generous portion size and tasted OK. The wine wasn't our favourite and it was very strong. We were in and out of the restaurant within 45 minutes! Unfortunately something did not agree with me and I was unwell during the night whilst my husband also felt a bit 'off'. We also had an extremely disappointing experience at Anthos which I have reviewed separately. If ever we were to return to the Blue Palace, we would most likely dine out for all our meals unless they do something remarkable to the quality of the food in the restaurants, especially as this was the most expensive holiday we have ever had. It's important to bear in mind that the hotel is built into the side of a hill, so it can get very, very windy. We couldn't help feeling that despite its location, the Blue Palace had lost a little bit of its specialness. If they could just get the restaurants back on track this would help restore its lustre. Despite all of this, the Blue Palace is still a stunning place to stay in Crete. They have the best location, amazing views and exceptional service.
