This was our third visit to Elounda Mare, this time we had a room with a private pool which was just wonderful. It was so relaxing, the staff were so helpful, friendly and made us feel completely at home. George the Bar Manager is so charming, in fact he's so friendly that we felt we wanted to have a drink most evenings before we dined. We ate in the hotel a couple of the times and the food was fantastic. We loved it. Can't wait to return.

Everything else was absolutely fabulous. By far the best service I have ever received at a hotel, and I've traveled a lot. Totally top tier kindness! The employees are incredibly warm and helpful. Whatever you ask for they will find a way to make happen. You can totally stay there the whole time, but we took a few day trips outside of Elounda (you’ll either need to rent a car or a taxi in order to do this). But if you want to stay at the resort, the hotel is great because there are three different hotels underneath the same ownership, and your hotel can make your reservation for other hotels restaurants because it's all under the same system. So it's fun because when you go to dinner to one of the other hotels, you feel like you're going somewhere else but it's really just a short shuttle ride away. We did not stay in a pool room but our room was right in front of the pool so it was like perfect for us as we still got the pool aspect! You must plan your trip to be there on a Monday night to experience Cretan night. It was so much fun!!! ENJOY! Elounda Mare truly is a magical place.

The room which was in fact a small suite was very comfortable with a good sitting room, very comfortable bed and two bathrooms and a large balcony facing the sea. It was just perfect. I cannot recommend it highly enough; staff were extremely efficient and best of all, smiley and friendly. The reception desk is manned by very helpful people who speak good English and cannot do enough to help. The restaurant is the best hotel restaurant we have ever encountered (with the exception of the Nare in Cornwall, England). There are in fact 2 very good ones. Pool is sea water and wonderful.

we have had a great stay, but our shower absolutely is horrible! I have complained since the day we got here and nothing was ever done! We are in our late 50’s or early 60’s and you need a step ladder to get in the shower and then the shower head is in the middle if the side not pointing to one end or other, therefore water goes everywhere. First night my wife of 60+ years was on hand and knees cwiping up the floor! So sad, we are on our vacation and this should not happen! Complained and 6 days later we are in same room and leaving tomorrow. I have complained every day since we have been here! I will never put my self or my wife thru this again!

Response from Ilias Kokotos, Ιδιοκτήτης at Elounda Mare Relais & Chateaux hotel
Responded Oct 4, 2022
Dear Mr & Mrs T, Thank you very much for staying with us and for taking the time to review, as well as for your very good partial marks. As discussed during your departure, we need to clarify the issue: This is not a shower but a bathtub with incorporated shower, because the bathroom in the rooms of the 4th floor (large terrace with sunbeds, highly demanded by countless loyal guests) is not large enough to have both a bathtub and a separate shower cubicle. Practically all our other rooms, suites and bungalows or villas have a separate shower. The bathtub, an Airbath, has a glass panel that keeps the water from splashing when taking a shower, although some attention is required for this. The bathroom is paneled with beautiful marble and is in perfect condition, even if not brand new or very large. Your comments about not having a separate shower came to my attention during your stay. However, this did not come as a request for a necessary room change that was nevertheless almost impossible due to the very high occupancy of the hotel. For your future stay, and for every potential guest, we would be more than happy to provide a room with separate shower if this is requested in advance. We are sorry that the lack of a separate shower made your otherwise great holiday less satisfactory, and we hope to welcome you back soon for a second perfect one! With our best wishes, Harry Maranghides

Our seventh stay in seven years. The hotel never disappoints. A fifty minute drive from Heraklion airport, located on the coast at Elounda, with fabulous views across Mirabello Bay. Set on a lovely estate which is immaculately maintained, with a good choice of accommodation, including the main hotel building, bungalows and villas. The hotel also enjoys its own small, sandy beach. There are a number of restaurants to choose from, all of which are excellent. Elounda itself is a twenty minute, downhill walk, very pleasant in the cooler evenings. Plaka, a delightful fishing village with fantastic views of the famous Spinalonga island, is a 10 minute drive away. The hotel is set up in a way which is not too modern, with traditional Greek/Cretan furnishings helping to create a wonderful authentic and relaxed ambience. At the risk of sounding clichéd, above all else it is the staff that make a stay so enjoyable and memorable. All of them, including those behind the scenes, are committed to providing a warm and friendly, as well as efficient, service. Special mention to the tireless Marina in The Deck, Yacht Club and Old Mill and Giorgos who runs the hotel bar with good humour and great stories. We very much hope to return in 2023. Highly recommended.

Little left to say after my previous reviews ,it’s very pretty with staggering views at lunch from the yacht club where we went almost daily , prawn sanganaki particularly Good , At the beach bar where Anna had left and been replaced by eirini , equally nice person where at 12.30 each day we indulged ourselves with a few glasses of rose Champagne ,accompanied by some delicious canapés To mention here this is the only hotel giving free canapés with champagne ,that we have ever visited and we have stayed at many hotels An addition to the dining offer was il borro an Italian in the sister hotel the peninsular With a most delightful evening setting , cozily lit ,terrific bar , and the best food To be specific , mushroom risotto with truffles - plenty - , perfectly cooked fish be it daurade or any other , that is crispy skin , juicy fish , hot vegetables . We loved this restaurant and after our first visit we went every evening when it was closed on our last evening we went to Elies , their Greek restaurant , under the trees Where we had also very enjoyable food . Great staff in both places , Babis rushing around serving the wine expertly , and a chap whose name I probably have wrong , keissel ,and any of the other staff A really delightful place . We had the Minoan royalty room , own pool , largish garden where we had those perfect breakfasts on white table cloths under the shade of the olive tree This room was quite modern with lights in the shower smart bathroom and plenty of wardrobe space - with enough hangers !, This year we have stayed at the splendido , the residencia Majorca , cobblers cove in Barbados , Colombe d ‘or St. Paul de Vence , this hotel was sufficiently different From all of them and it must be said with better food than the splendido or the residencia , although they are both magnificent hotels . A passing word for George in the bar to whom after a night out it was nice to return to for a night cap and a chat .

I stayed at this lovely hotel for the first time recently. I was on holiday with a friend and really wanted a peaceful and tranquil hotel where I would be able to rest. I could not have made a better choice. It was rather like stepping back in time. Very caring staff who always seemed to go the extra mile to make sure my friend and I had everything we needed to enjoy our holiday. Great value for money, we couldn't fault it and a room with a view that I will miss. I hope to return one day.

Charming family owned and run hotel with great attention to detail. Wonderful views and gardens. Comfortable and well maintained room and public areas. Very good breakfast with lots of variety and proper tea with boiling water, loose leaf tea and a teapot! Dinner in the Yacht Club and Old Mill restaurants was good but would be better with more variety and daily specials. The staff and personal approach make this hotel stand out.

We often opt for the Relais & Chateaux family of hotels as they always have a special feel about them, and you get that with Elounda Mare for sure. The staff were exceptional and nothing was too much of problem – always with smiles. It’s a pretty hotel with lots of little paths and places to sit, but there were some downsides: Bathrooms are dated, looks like 1980s as you walk in, but the water pressure is great and everything works just fine, and the products are lovely too so not a huge issue. (a light in the shower would be nice!) Pool is salt water and cold – great looking pool, pity it’s not fresh water and heated. The sea was warmer when we there and few people were using the pool, I presume because it was so cold. Food was a little disappointing at times. I don’t mind paying good money for good food, but steaks and lamb had to be sent back on one occasion. If you are sticking to sea food you will be fine. Wine list is expensive (4-5 mark up on retail) and there is little from the rest of the world under 100 Euros. All in all we liked the hotel, but not enough to entice us back again anytime soon.

We were very satisfied when we went in 2019, but wondered how the hotel would have coped after Covid. We needn't have worried as they had the same excellent and friendly staff. We like a bungalow with a pool near the beach area and were fortunate to be allocated Room 41 which had just been refurbished. The pillows are harder than we were used to, as was the bed and the overhead shower needs a pump. When this was mentioned on leaving, they were right onto it. The food is excellent but it would be best not to be on half-board as there are some excellent tavernas along the harbour in Elounda to try for a change. In the evening, the only bar area is in Reception. Some form of bar near the beach/shopping Square would be good in the evening as the beach bar closes. We shall return as the hotel has everything we want for a relaxing holiday.
