We very much enjoyed our week at the Mirabella apartments and would recommend for anyone wanting a relaxing week away

The seaview from the room (we were in studio 11 at the end on the upper floor) was amazing & you could hear the waves from the balcony.
The room was clean and had everything we needed to make a basic breakfast and lunch (kettle, toaster, stove, fridge & freezer). The aircon was effective & the showers hot, the beds were a little on the hard side but ok

The apartments are set in beautiful gardens, and the sun beds by the pool get the sun until about 4, and there is a path down to a rocky beach for snorkelling. Car parking is found opposite the apartments.

The apartments are quiet, and there is a small shop on site.

Unfortunately due to covid most of the nearby restaurants were closed, but there is one (Olgas Tavern) just along the road which was delicious (€35 for more than enough food and wine for 2). There is also a haviana beach bar next door but we found the cocktails overpriced & not very nice so stick to the beer there

Buses only run in the day so it’s €8 each way in a cab into town where there are loads of restaurants and bars, all of which are staying covid safe with staff wearing masks & dishing out hand sanitiser

The apartments are also a 15 min drive from eloundra where there is a stunning beach, free parking, €7 for 2 sun beds & an umbrella & more restaurants.

In the other direction is voulissma where it’s €15 for sun beds & is busier so you need to get there early

Very relaxed apartments, private pool and view to die for. I loved the whole experience. So chilled, staff available if you need anything but are non-interfering, which I liked as have stayed in a neighbouring apartment complex and found it quite overwhelming and cliquey, if you wanted to keep to yourself.
The pool area is really nice and sometimes we had the pool to ourselves. Cute little cat would pop by. Good balcony area looking at the view, essential appliances available. We ate out every day so didn't really need much. Also can't comment on the breakfast but other guests appeared to enjoy it. Fab area, easy access to Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. Nice tavernas close by. Yvonne from reception was very approachable and helpful. Only downside was leaving.

My boyfriend and I spent a week at the Mirabella Apartments in June 2006 and had the most fantastic time. We were a little apprehensive about it as we knew from the brochure that it was a fair walk into Ag Nik itself. The reality of this is that it really isn't a problem.

Firstly, you'll find yourself with so much to do in the area around the apartments anyway and lots of really good tavernas (lots of fresh fish and nice Greek dishes or English dishes if you prefer). We did decide to go into Ag Nik on a couple of occasions and it was pretty easy to do. Just beware of all the people around the bottomless lake trying to get you into their restaurants. It can get a little annoying, but there are some great restaurants there, such as Dionysus. It is a pretty long walk (and we both like walking!) but the local buses run from right outside the apartment and costs around 1euro20cents each or a taxi costs 6euro. We tended to get the bus in and a taxi home.

The apartments itself - as long as you're not expecting 5 star and that you're aware of the typical conditions in Crete (i.e. water not always hot first thing in the morning due to it being run by solar power and putting toilet roll in the bin rather than in the toilet - all fairly typical things out there) then you'll be fine! We loved our studio apartment. We were on the ground floor which worried us a little when we arrived in case it was noisy but it wasn't at all and the room stayed fantastically cool, we didn't need the air conditioning (although it is very reasonably priced if you do). There is a safety box in the room at a small charge.

There is a lovely pool bar, run by Diane in the evenings, a lovely German girl. They did a happy hour while we were there between 7 and 8 and then again between 10 and 11. It was literally heaven sitting by the pool, looking out over the beach and enjoying cocktails/beer/wine etc. The food served is very reasonably priced and is really good too.

While you're there, also worth looking at is Elounda (again a short bus ride away in the opposite direction to Ag Nik) and a boat trip over to Spinalonga (an old leper colony). We also ventured over to Samaria Gorge. Fantastic trip but extremely hard work in the heat and a very long trip from this side of the Island (around a 20hour round trip).

If it helps, I would have no hesistation in going back and other couples staying at the same time as us felt exactly the same. It is a fantastic relaxing place to go for a holiday. The local beach, Havania, is lovely and about 3 minutes walk from the apartments. It is quite stony and shoes that you can wear in the sea would perhaps be helpful (although we didn't have them actually) but you can see all the little fishes swimming around your feet and my boyfriend told me that the snorkelling is amazing there.

Not sure who is writing these dashing reviews, but we came here in August and were beyond disappointed. Having stayed at two other beautiful hotels in Crete before our arrival to Agios Nikolaos we were expecting (from reviews) a nice stay at Mirabella, especially since we paid the most money for this hotel. The apartment overall was outdated and filthy, old furniture, dust covering the dressers, rips in the couch, AC loud and not working that blew out smelly, dusty air, no nets on the window doors, so lots of bugs in the room, no TV, no working lights in the bathroom, filthy shower curtain with mold, dirty ashtray outside of our door for 2 days with left over coffee glass, no one to greet you and take you to the room, or explain what's available, uncomfortable beds, stinky pillows, hair on sheets, broken pool chairs. If you have absolutely no standards and want a basic HOSTAL with a beautiful view, then this is your place otherwise, look elsewhere.

Thank you for your review to which we are beyond disappointed that this is your view of us. All our dashing reviews are written by bona fide guests and our guests come from all over the world with all age groups covered and many guests returning to us year after year. I have checked our register and we did not have a couple of any nationality stay in Apartment 16 during the month of August and as this is the only apartment with a couch, this must be the apartment you refer to. Perhaps you made a mistake with the dates that you say you stayed with us. We did have a family from New York stay in September but as I met these guests upon arrival and spoke to the lady from this family at length the following day at the snack bar without receiving any complaints, this may not be you. We totally refute your allegation that this apartment was filthy. Our rooms are fresh prepared for each guest and cleaned a minimum of every second day. We also send our bed linens to a local laundry company and we have never had a complaints about the cleanliness from any guest . The couch in Apartment 16 has been checked and there was a very small section of a seam of approximately 1.5 inch that had come undone. The AC has many different settings and whereas you can hear the unit running if set to high, it is very difficult to hear the unit when set to quiet. We have staff on the premises from approximately 6.30am until midnight. If a guest arrives outwith these hours there is no one in Reception to meet them. If we have an email address for guests we send details prior to arrival advising them where we are located, which room has been allocated to them, the exact location within our two buildings as to where the room is and how to use the electrics. There is also a Welcome Board on the entrance pathway with room allocation details. Each room has a Welcome Note advising guests to contact us immediately if they require anything in addition to what we supply or if they have any problems. Our telephone numbers are included on this note but you did not contact us by phone or in person to express your disappointment or inform us of any problem. It is very rare for me not to inquire from a guest if everything in their room is all right or if they require something. The only time I can think this would happen is when guests stay for 1 night, arriving in the evening and leave first thing in the morning without me seeing them at all. Throughout the whole of the 2014 season we did not receive any complaints from any guest that would indicate this level of disappointment. Perhaps if you had advised us of any of your issues we could have responded at the time. Elizabeth Morris Reservation Manager

Last week we returned from our trip to the Mirabella Apartments, my boyfriend and I (late 20s) were there for 2 weeks (26th Sept - 10th Oct) and had an amazing time. We put the holiday package together ourselves – we flew out with Thomas Cook, home with EasyJet and used ResortHoppa as our transfer company. I was really pleased with ResortHoppa – so I’d recommend them, it took us around 1.5 hours to get between the airport and the Mirabella Apartments.

Location
The location of these apartments were perfect for us. Don't be put off by the fact that you're not in the centre of a resort, there is everything you need nearby and a bus stop outside the hotel. I had looked at travelling to Ag. Nik for years - but the beaches always worried me. I like a quiet beach, sandy and not row upon row of sunbeds, and the town beaches (while lovely!) weren't the kind that would suit us. When advised by the TA forums Havania Beach was recommended to us and the Mirabella Apartments are about a 3 minute walk away so that’s when I looked into booking the Mirabella and I am so pleased that we did.

I contacted the apartments directly to ask some questions and check availability and was quickly replied to by Elizabeth, the Reservations Manager. Elizabeth was great and helped me find the dates that suited me and also gave me time to check with my boyfriend before I booked anything. When we met Elizabeth at the apartments she was extremely helpful, advising on restaurants, activities and area info. Thank you Elizabeth for your help before and during the holiday!

Outside the apartments
The hotel pool is lovely, although I didn't use it much, my boyfriend did a couple of times a day. It's in a lovely spot in the hotel grounds, just in front of the main building and you can see the sea when stood poolside.

The views are breathtaking - the pictures on here are lovely, but you need see the view first hand and experience the colours in the sky over the mountains as the sun goes down! We sat every night with a brew and some snacks on our balcony listening to the sea and watching the sky change. Magical!

The hotel is set just back from the seafront, there is an area of grass / trees in-between the hotel and the sea. We used the path from the hotel to Havania beach once, it was quite stony, which wasn't a problem for my boyfriend, but I preferred to walk along with road when in just my flip flops.

Nearby is the amazing Olga's Taverna, a family run taverna with lovely food and views - I would really recommend heading there for lunch (we did most days when we were down at the beach).
Havania Beach was wonderful – it was literally 3 minutes away and there was a little restaurant which served some food, snacks and drinks. The beds were 7 euros (2 + an umbrella). There was some good snorkelling opportunities underwater too and we saw some great fish. Beach shoes might be a good idea for getting in / out if you struggle to walk on the stones. The stones do turn into sand after about 10 steps into the sea.

Inside the apartments
We spent our first night in a studio and the rest of the holiday in a 2 bedroom apartment. We knew we'd have to move when we booked as there was no apartments available for 14 nights straight (shows how popular they are...so I recommend getting straight in there with your booking!) The studio had a bigger window so the room was lighter, however, the 2 bedroom apartment really suited us as I was able to use the 2nd room as a dressing room!

The apartments are well equipped - kettle, toaster, fridge, wifi (free!), safe (free!), Aircon (free!) The fact these items weren't charged for are the little things that make the Mirabella special - I've been away so many times where the extras are charged for, so it's a lovely touch from the Mirabella. The shower was powerful, warm water was always available and towels were changed every other day (apart from on Sunday).

Getting around
It suited us to be between two resorts, Ag. Nik was around 5 mins on the bus or a 25 min walk and Elounda was about 10/15 mins on the bus and although there were lovely views to be had it is quite a trek and lots of uphill. We alternated between the two resorts each night. We used buses during the day and to take us out at night and then used taxis to take us home. The bus cost about 3.20 euros for both of us and the service was regular, not always on time but there was always one that came. One night we were going to Elounda and the bus pulled over and stopped but then drove off - which was a bit frustrating as there wasn't another one for an hour so we hopped in a taxi. On our last day when travelling back from Ag.Nik the bus drove past our stop, and dropped us off further up the road. Again, not a huge problem, but frustrating as we needed to pack up and check out! A taxi was 7 euros from Ag. Nik and 13 from Elounda. We also hired a car for one day from Kera Cars (on the road heading to Ag. Nik) which was relatively cheap (30 euros) and we had a nice day in Heraklion. Always make sure you say ‘Mirabella APARTMENTS’ – the apartments bit is key as the Mirabello Hotel is nearby so just be careful as we were nearly caught out a couple of times!

Ag Nik
What a great town. It’s definitely not a typical resort, but that was fine. Shopping here was amazing, all the usual touristy shops for gifts and souvenirs but then there were some really great other shops too for clothing, art and my favourite was Talos which sells the most beautiful crystals. I managed to bring some home with me and they survived in my hand luggage! There are some good restaurants around, we had some great meals in Piato and To Karnagio and Chez George had great views and drinks. We didn’t enjoy the meal at Du Lac – my food was ok but the service does need addressing.

We also went on the Yellow Semi-Sub boat, which was a great little excursion. It cost 15 euros for an adult and you saw some amazing sites when under the water looking at the fish. I’ve written a full review under that activity.

Elounda
Definitely quieter than Ag.Nik but so beautiful. We had amazing meals at Porto Rino, The Hope and Palio Kantouni – I’d really recommend these restaurants and have written reviews separately. We also fell in love with the most amazing bakery – Angela’s Cake Shop. Selling the most delicious cakes and croissants – we managed to bring a couple home which were devoured the day we got back. The lady who runs the shop, along with her husband who makes the cakes – were two of the loveliest people we met on our trip, so kind and hospitable, plus talented with the cake making skills! Please please go and try some – I’ve gained a few lbs while I’ve been away, but it was worth every mouthful! Also we visited Eklektos Bookshop, Lynne & John are the owners and were really friendly with a great choice of books in multiple languages, they also recommended various restaurants to us.

To conclude
Would I recommend the Mirabella? Yes. No questions. They are great apartments and we wouldn’t think twice about going back. I’m quite fussy and I research for about 3 months before I book my holidays – I spent a long time looking for our Crete holiday and thankfully we had the perfect trip. The only slight hiccup? It rained on our first couple of days. But hopefully by the time we next visit Elizabeth will have worked out how to stop the rain in September...well she managed to help sort out everything else :)

Wow, thank you so much for such a comprehensive and lovely review. We really do appreciate your recommendation and the time and effort you have spent extolling the virtues of the Mirabella Apartments and Agios Nikolaos. As you contacted us directly we were able to explain what accommodation was available that would fit in with your flights and made you a provisional reservation until you could confirm them. Had you used an online booking company it is possible that you may not have been able to book your accommodation so easily as it involved two room categories. We offer direct access on to Havania Beach, however this path take guests to a rocky part of the beach and we tend to use it for SUP lessons (Stand Up Paddle Board) and snorkelling. Guests with aqua shoes should not experience problems entering or leaving the sea. The public entrance to the beach is approximately 1 minute away and this beach offers crystal clear water, sand and pebbles on the beach, sun loungers and umbrellas for hire plus a snack bar and car park. The cosmopolitan town of Agios Nikolaos is 3kms away and there visitors will find restaurants, tavernas and cafes to suit all budgets. There are also some very nice jewellers and the Talos shop you liked stocks some amazing items of crystal. I will practice my rain stopping powers over the winter but think that could just be that step too far - even for me lol!! We look forward to your return and hope that no more screws get loose before you can return, take care both :-) Elizabeth Morris Reservation Manager

The room was perfect with a view of the sea from every room! Great place to wake up! The staff was more than accomodating, and always available to give you information about the area, assist you in renting a car, bus schedules, and ideas of places to go and things to see. The hotel has a small bar area, that serves up good and simple foods for breafast, lunch and dinner, at very reasonable prices -The rooms also have a mini kitchen with a fridge, a hotplate and a few utensils !
I look forward to returning to Mirabella!

We have just come from the Mirabella where we stayed as a large group attending a wedding. The hotel was ideal for us and the pool and bar area were excellent for us gathering together during the days and evenings. The view is picturesque and we were on the first floor with our balcony overlooking the sea, the rooms were also clean and spacious. The staff were friendly and extremely helpful especially so Elizabeth who will help in any way she can with any query you have from organising transport to day trips. The main town is a 40min walk away but it is only €7 in a taxi so this was not an issue, there is also a supermarket and a few travernas within close proximity and the bus stop is directly outside. We would certainly consider coming back to stay if we are ever back in Crete.

Thank you so much for your lovely review and we are so pleased that you had such a wonderful holiday and Wedding experience. It was really lovely to see so many family members and friends all be together having a great time in and around the pool and snack bar area. As a group you were happy for us to organise coach hire for transfers and day drips. You even managed to get a very good bargain on the day trip I helped you organise to one of the nearby water parks. Return coach hire and entrance fee cheaper than the normal entrance fee - just proves travelling in a large group can have its benefits. The nearest taxi rank is based 800m away from the Mirabella Apartments and we can usually have a taxi collect a guest within a few minutes of being asked. We look forward to seeing you and many of your friends and family return to us and we would like to take this opportunity to wish you and Barry a fabulous Wedding Day in September. Hi there! Yes, I would say that we have a good environment for families. Swimming pool, snack bar, trampoline, table tennis, pool table, garden space, near to the beach and not so far (3Km) to reach the town centre in Agios Nikolaos. Our largest apartment is for up to 4 people. We also provide baby cots free of charge. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us! Yvonne Fotiadi (Reservations)

Hi many thanks for contacting us. There are probably only a few restaurants that have would expect you to wear long trousers in the evening. If there is a dress code in operation I would expect it to be the Migomis, which is situated on the road above the lake and Gold, which is on 28th October St. Unfortunately neither restaurant has opened for the season yet, so I cannot confirm this 100%. All other restaurants and tavernas will allow you in without the need of long trousers. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any further assistance.
