Unfortunately we, Barry and Anne Junior, only visited the Lato this year rather than stayed. The only direct package from NI to the Lato would be with Evri and did not fancy travelling in an extra legroom box. Found everything the same as usual i.e really good. The first time we visited the Lato we arrived near midnight. Being my usual helpful self I gave my wife plenty of room to unpack and found the bar being operated by Janis who later I called the vampire because he was only there at night. I learned to enjoy parrot juice which we drank over a bit of chat. I later realised that the amount of parrot juice was much larger than the norm. Parrot juice is so called because everyone knows that parrots can be trained to say "ouzo lucky boy." Also was reminded that Greece is a land of Mythos. Very smartly designed well kept hotel which is always spotless in equally well cared for grounds. The owners and staff make the hotel worth more than 5 star because, like the vast majority of Greeks I have met, they are so friendly and helpful. Breakfasts were always very good and Maya's cakes exceptional. No evening meals which is no problem because Ag Nik is packed with restaurants to suit every taste and many are very good. Had a lovely meal this year at almost next door KriKri. Next door the Galley is great if you want to watch sport and like UK food. (Of course remember that if you go to a posh taverna with a huge selection of almost instantly available food it will be microwaved and may have come from Granny's food factory in Thessaloniki..... posh tavernas have de pinged microwaves} Turn left and walk past Ormos Beach and in a couple of hundred more yards you will find Stavros taverna on the right and the delightful Maria Lovely Jubbly. Turn right, pass a small supermarket, and there are good tavenas past the mini roundabout just after Ammoudi beach, the nearest beach and very safe for swimming. Be warned that if you like obsequious bar managers/lunch treat providers you have chosen the wrong hotel. Jeanette aka Shirley Valentine puts a great vibe in to the bar. Her house used to have a pebble drive though these are now spread world wide with many still in rude health. Tortoise and ducks adorn the front of our house and a sea urchin is by me as I type. (beware of sea urchins if swimming off pebble beaches or where there are submerged rocks. I well remember a Jeanette unintended mystery Greek night. A fleet of taxis was ordered. We had assumed the driver knew our destination a taverna in a small village in the Lakonia valley. My wife and I had visited it several times and passed it even more en route to the Lasithi plateau but could not recall the name (I now know why, it has not got one) I told the driver the one with the big bouganvillea and finally I told him that Isabella worked there. That solved things. Apparently it is known as Stavrakakis'. The dining room turned out ot be the street where a lot of tables had been joined in to one long one. Great craic and unlimited food and drink. Be warned if you use the sun roof you will be unlikely to have a drink brought up as Jeanette is no dumb waiter. Do not make the mistake of shouting down for a drink as consequences could be dire. A warning to men to not wear white socks as these are bantered. (unless you are thick skinned enough to take the consequences). Jeanette plays mood music. Dear help you if you put her in to a bad mood. Plenty of parking at the hotel so hire a car and see more of the island (it is so large it scarcely deserves that description) and of course The Island, Spinalonga. We would always take the local bus to delightful Plaka and take one of the very frequent ferries. When driving you will quickly find double white lines have no meaning whatsoever and, generally, do not attempt to turn directly left when on a main road. Also keep well over to the right on main roads when you see an overtaker coming up behind. Delay moving off the split second the green light appears (straight from red of course not like UK) and you will discover why vehicles have horns fitted. With a car you can access the English supermarket and Lidl both on the Kritsa road.

Very traditional Greek family owned hotel, very quaint the family that run it are very friendly and helpful. It’s about 25 minute walk from the centre of Agios Nikolaos It’s on the road but the road noise wasn’t really noticeable It has a small pool and sun beds There’s a small beach about 5 minute walk to the left and a bigger one in the other direction 10 minutes where there are comfy sun beds & umbrella’s €15 2 beds & umbrella and water sports and a couple of beach tavernas. We were in room 1 downstairs with a table & chairs outside The room was spotless and cleaned daily in-fact the whole hotel is very clean, room is basic but the beds very comfortable. Air con works well & there’s a safe it was about €80 for the both My only criticism would be it could go with more plug sockets & the shower cubicle is very small. The breakfast was nice with home made cakes/jams etc We would return as it was a quaint non offensive little hotel, there were shower rooms for your last day ( the shower was a walk in one and much bigger)

We stayed at Lato hotel in Agios Nikolaos at the end of May 2023. The owner and staff were extremely friendly and helpful. In addition, the room was very comfortable and clean, breakfast was delicious and varied (fresh fruit, nuts, eggs, bacon, homemade cakes, a selection of bread, fruit juices, etc.) and the pool was very and clean. The hotel also has a lovely garden and terrace for breakfast and drinks. We would definitely recommend this hotel , which is only about 15 minutes on foot from the city centre. We had dinner at a lovely family restaurant in Agios Nikolaos (Avli Taverna). We also visited Spinalonga and Elounda.

Another great stay at the Lato, very clean and friendly place to stay. My wife and I had a lovely 10 days with a fantastic Sea View. Family owned hotel where nothing is a problem. Also big thanks to Janet, the breakfast ladies and cleaners. We will be back.

We arrived late last Saturday, and we were put into a very small (single?) room with a sea view - I had requested a sea view by email earlier in the yea, but never received a reply. The gentleman on reception immediately told us on arrival that in the morning we would be moved, so not to unpack fully. We were so tired after a very long day travelling, we were happy to accept this. In the morning while we were at breakfast our room was changed to a bigger room with an even better sea view. The room was not huge but adequate, it contained cupboard/drawer space & lots of hangers. A dressing table with mirror & nearby plug socket & a stall & 2 bedside cabinet, but no sockets by the bed. The bed was comfortable and had a mattress topper. The bedding was older but clean and serviceable. It was changed once during our stay. We had 4 pillows, a throw & there was a blanket in the wardrobe. The fridge was small, but ok for a couple of bottles & snacks. There was a kettle, cups and glasses for 2. The balcony was small with 2 chairs, a table and an airer with pegs. The room was cleaned everyday, with fresh towels as required. Curtains were thick and cut out early morning light. There was also a TV, that we didn't use. The bathroom was small with a shower cubical with sliding door, the tiling could do with an update, but the water was always piping hot at all times of day and the shower was powerful. There is a wall hairdryer. Breakfast was very good, lots of offer, including cooked items, beans, eggs, bacon & or sausage, frittata. Cold items, meats, cheeses, tomatoes, peppers, yogurt and fresh fruits. These items changed during the week, sometimes fried egg, scrambled, sometimes bacon or sausage, various fruits There was bread and various homemade cake & biscuits everyday, with various preserves, honey & butter. Fresh orange juice, ( not squash) tea & filter coffee. These items were all plentiful, my only issue would be that hot foods, were not always piping hot, but warm, but always edible. you could eat inside or out, under shade or by the pool. The dining room & reception areas were all clean and well presented. As were the toilets. Without exception, all staff members were helpful and friendly. In fact during our week, our Daughter decided to come for 3 days, and on request she was allowed to sleep on a sofa bed in our room and have breakfast for a very reasonable amount of money. They were very accommodating and helpful. The hotel is in a good location, approximately 1 hour from Heraklion airport, we hired a car, but you could walk into Agios Nikolaos fairly easily. There is also a bus service near by, but we didn't use it ourselves. There is also a large car park at the hotel. The pool area is clean and I saw the pool being cleaned on several occasions, and several sunbeds available. No sun bed wars. There is a well equipped bar, but we didn't use it, and day time snacks were advertised. Several tavernas are in walking distance, (we particularly liked kri-kri) and a beach & bar area across the road. There are a couple of shops and supermarket near by. Also several car hire shops, we used Club Cars and was very happy with the deal that they offered us for the week. We asked for air con which was sold at a daily rate of 7 euros - but we were actually charged 8 euros on our bill. No big deal. The only thing I would mention is that we booked via easy jet and the photos they had online for this hotel were not correct, they were showing a different hotel also called Lato - but not connected. In my case I was extremely happy to find the hotel as I did, quite rustic and authentic Greek. The other photos are very modern and not at all to my taste. I had booked the holiday on price and location and was glad the photos were incorrect on this occasion. All in all, a very good & happy holiday experience. One I would definitely recommend.

Finally we could return to the Lato. We visited in May with our children and husbands parents and again in June just as a couple to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. We have been coming to the Lato since 2012 with a few years break (Covid) we were so happy to return. The whole Lato team are always so helpful and always fuss over our boys to ensure they have want they need and want. We stayed in our usual family room in May and a beautiful sea view room above reception in June. The hotel is rustic, it’s not commercialised it’s in a great position for the beach and for the 15/20 minute stroll into town. We did the sub boat from town and hired a self drive boat with friends for half a day from Pelagos dive centre just left out of the hotel which was just the most amazing afternoon of snorkelling and exploring the coastline. We ate in various restaurants you really cannot get a bad meal the local restaurants pride themselves on great food and service. Lunch at the hotel Is great and Jeanette makes a stunning cocktail. Overall it’s a friendly low key hotel perfect for a quiet relaxing holiday.

We booked with EasyJet their website shows 18 photos of the Hotel Lato, however only 6 photos relate to the Hotel Lato in Agios Nikolaos 2* (where we are staying). 12 of the photos are of the Lato Boutique Hotel which is 4* in Heraklion Town, Crete. These hotels only share names and are not related in anyway, indeed you could say they are opposites. Needless to say we were extremely disappointed when we arrived. The room we were given 101 which was above reception, noisy, small and very basic, however did have a sea view. When we spoke to George the manager and showed him the photos on EasyJet website he agreed that most of the photos were not of his hotel and they had no connection the other hotel with the same name. We looked at 2 additional rooms but these were also small and the one photo on EasyJet website of the bedroom wasn’t even one of the rooms that EasyJet are allocated. If you are expecting a 2* hotel it is nice, the space around the pool can get crowded. We had lunch once at the hotel and Janette was really nice and helpful. Breakfast is a mix of continental and some hot food, don’t expect fried eggs, lovely homemade cakes, but no selection of breads. Princess the resident black cat 🐈‍⬛ is entertaining but can get grumpy! Location wise we found it good for us and we did get on the local bus to visit Plaka and Krista and both are definitely worth a visit. It is a good 20 minute walk to the centre with a great choice of restaurants and shops. Most evenings we dined at Patriko which was on the way to the centre, lovely meals and great husband and wife team, highly recommend. Would we come back to this hotel no, would prefer a better quality hotel but that’s just our opinion they were a lot of guests there who have returning for many years.

Lato hotel is fine. Rooms are very basic, but adequate. The fridge in the room isn't great. Barely keeps things cool. Air con is an extra 7 euros a night. Breakfast has a good selection of options. Staff are nice but Jeanette behind the bar is particularly lovely! She's very friendly, makes the best pina coladas and smashing chips. The only thing I'd say is that the pool could do with being cleaned a bit more regularly. It just needs someone going round with a pool net every few hours maybe. Certainly needs it first thing in the morning. Overall, we've had a good stay. Lovely walk along the seafront to the lake area. And a couple of minutes walk to the lovely Amoudi Beach.

We stayed here for 16 nights, on arrival late at night we were shown to the smallest room but assured we would be moved the following day which we were. The rooms are not the biggest but are spotless and cleaned every day, the bathrooms have shower cubicles which was a nice surprise. The hotel is very much " returners hotel " which on arrival can feel a bit cliquey but infact is very friendly. The location is fabulous with good restaurants near by and the town a very pleasant 20 minute walk along the sea front. The bar is run so well by the fabulous Janette, and manned by lovely Nikos later at night. Breakfast is so good, always a great selection with different homemade bakes evey day, cheese pies, cakes, jams and the ladies who serve it are so lovely. The beach is a pleasant 10 minute walk away.
