Are you looking for an off beaten path Italian vacation, a mix of Italian rural life, contact with nature, relax and tranquillity? Palazzo del Duca offers all of that in the magic atmosphere of a 17th century old palazzo situated in the heart of a lovely tiny medieval village surrounded by the natural beauty of the Tuscan-emilian Appennines National Park. A paradise for lovers of all activities in close contact with nature: trekking, hiking, fishing, horse riding, canoeing etc. Etc. At very close distance there are the 100 Lakes Park and Alpi Apuane Park. We are in Tuscany, but very close to other 2 regions, Liguria and Emilia Romagna. The area is gem-set between mountains and sea. In 30 minutes driving you can go skiing in the winter or you can go visiting one of the most beutiful coasts of Italy, 5 Terre (Unesco Site), Portovenere and Gulf of Poets

Detailed Reviews
We just had our wedding reception in Palazzo Del Duca, it was the most amazing time we have ever ever had!! Mirella and Francesco were so friendly and accommodating, they made our stay so fantastic. Mirella is a great host she helped us not only organize wedding for 40 people but she also have cooked our wedding meal which was totally amazing! I cannot express how much I appreciate their help in organizing transport from the airport and to Portovenere church and all tips and advises!!
Many of our guests say they will return as they fall in love with Palazzo and medieval style of Tavernelle.
We cannot say enough about Mirella and Francesco and their wonderful castle, Palazzo del Duca. They have created such a delightful, friendly, and warm environment that none of us wanted to leave. The rooms are so beautiful, furniture stunning what give this amazing touch to finish of medieval style Palazzo! Thank you so much Mirella, Francesco ( and of course beautiful Elena:) ) for being so amazing. We will see you in couple of months :)

We were a group of 4 and stayed for 4 nights at the Palazzo del Duca at the end of April. Mirella and Francisco are friendly and welcoming hosts who were always available to contact before, during and after our stay. Both are excellent English speakers. They prepared a meal of local produce on our first night which we ate with our hosts. The accommodation consists of self-contained apartments in an historic building with many original features and was very clean and the rooms very large. The internet connections are good and there are more than ample bathroom facilities in each apartment. The kitchen was well equipped and we were given a large selection of food to prepare our breakfast each day, On the second and third days we had cooking lessons with Mirella which were both informative and entertaining and provided us with our main meal on these days. The lessons and sampling lasted for about 4 hours each day. We also had an informative talk from Francisco about tasting wine and sampled some of his own Chianti Classico.
A car is essential to take advantage of the area and Mirella has a wealth of local knowledge and had many recommendations for trips and restaurants. An ideal location for exploring this area of Italy
Overall a very enjoyable holiday with lots of good local food and wine. Highly recommended.

I cannot speak highly enough of Palazzo del Duca!
We first visited the Palazzo in 2016 with a large group, and returned recently with our immediate family for another week. Both visits were completely enjoyable. Mirella (the GM) is a wonderful and gracious host; the rooms are spacious and relaxing; the building is well updated to preserve its history and provide modern conveniences; the grounds and pool are beautiful, quiet and peaceful. The place is an oasis in the Italian mountains with ready access to hiking, small Italian town ambiance, great local food, fine Italian wine (especially that from Mirella's husband Francesco), and day trips to Cinque Terra, northern Tuscany, Milan, Florence, and many other local towns. We were so happy to show our daughters the place we enjoyed so much on our first visit. 5 stars all around!!

A large group of us stayed for a week, celebrating some special birthdays, and we all fell in love with Tavernelle, and our gracious host at the Palazzo del Duca, Mirella. She was so gracious, welcoming, friendly and is a wonderful cook--she served a delicious dinner for 25 of us one of our first nights there. We so enjoyed the historical and charming setting of the Palazzo, lounging by the pool in the afternoon and evenings, walking over to the local bar/restaurant/community gathering place and being so well located for short day trips to Pisa, Lucca, Porto Venere, and Cinque Terre.

Our extended family of 15 people (3 generations!) had the most wonderful week in this glorious palazzo in Tavernelle, Tuscany. The memories we shared will bring us joy for a lifetime. Thank you to owner/managers Mirella, Francesco and especially their adorable daughter Elana! - for the hospitality, the delicious food, and for being so gracious to our family. The space was comfortable, spacious, warm and inviting. The pool was glorious - and so necessary on those hot summer days! - and the garden with its glorious flowers and trees was an oasis. We loved taking day trips to surrounding mountain villages, hiking in the woods, swimming in the creek, and night-time strolls down the enchanted alleys of this ancient village, down to the fields lighted only by fireflies. Truly a magical vacation.

Our visit to Palazzo del Duca was certainly a highlight of our trip to Italy. We were thrown back in time by the lovely medieval town of Tavernelle and the Palazzo itself is a gem of a place. The space in our apartment was large and beautiful and though it had the look of a bygone era, it had everything we needed to be relaxed and comfortable. The town was quiet, quaint and friendly. We loved our time there.
Mirella was a kind, considerate and most hospitable host. She was easy to talk to and shared lots of good ideas for day trips in the area. We had a cooking lesson with her that was fun and instructive... and fed us well for two meals.
We would be delighted to return to the Lunigiana area and the Palazzo del Duca especially. The Palazzo is one of those extraordinary places that will always have a place in our hearts.

I stayed at the Palazzo del Duca in July 2018 for a cookery and wine trip. I can't recommend it highly enough. The palazzo is beautiful and full of history. Mirella and Francesco are great teachers and with their little daughter Elena make a lovely, welcoming and friendly family. I travelled alone but was well cared for and the wine and cookery classes were fun, interesting and exceptional value. I was lucky enough to stay in the Depandance apartment which has its own terrace. Very comfy bed but steep stairs/ladder to bedroom so make sure you're fully awake if you get up in the night The surroundings are beautiful and having a car meant I could venture out and see the mountains and villages around. I even found the driving easy which came as a surprise and I found myself way up in the mountains without a soul in sight. The Wi-Fi is fine but only available in a certain spot due to the thickness of the palazzo walls! The local bar/ restaurant also has free WiFi though so if you're desperate for technology that's also an option over a cappuccino! Alternatively just chill and relax by the pool among the flowers.

We are very delighted you enjoyed the stay at Palazzo del Duca and courses we offer. It was a real pleasure for both of us to spend time to teach you what we know about food and wine and to transmit you these passions we have. We hope you will be coming back in the future for new interesting recipes to learn or just for a visit. All the best in the meantime. Greetings and kisses by Elena :-)

“Magical” is the word I use to describe the time my family, friends and I spent at the palazzo. Francesco and Mirella are amazing. The palazzo is wonderful and worked perfectly for our group of 18 people. If you are lucky enough to spend time here, I highly recommend that you make arrangements for dinner at the palazzo. Food is amazing and atmosphere is perfect. (Think dinner on the patio under the stars!). There are lots of options for day trips and driving in the area is not difficult. My only regret is that I wasn't able to stay longer. I keep telling people that I have “visited” many places but, because of the unique atmosphere at the palazzo, I feel that I “lived” in Italy and I hope to visit again some day.

+1
When you stay at Palazzo del Duca — You do not feel like you are staying in an apartment.. you feel like you have been transported to the 13th century and welcomed home. Mirella with her darling baby Elena is more than a host, with her warm and welcome spirit and helpful nature, she will help you plan a wonderful vacation. The cooking classes she offers are not to be missed. Who knew it was so easy to make homemade pasta. Mirella's good friend Pat Case, an American, is also very helpful in planning tours. She has been everywhere in Tuscany! We did not meet Mirella’s husband, Francesco because he was in the Chianti region picking grapes for his own wine label. We drank some his wine and it is wonderful. There is a case of wine in the hallway for purchase on the honor system… at 8 Euro’s a bottle, we purchased a few bottles..
The 5 apartments are all well appointed, spacious, clean and comfortable. Mirella gave us a tour of each of them. The historical 15th century borgo is a very cool setting. The local restaurant and bar, Il Capriolo, has the best coffee you will find in Italy and the food is terrific. This tiny village is in a beautiful setting about 30 minutes from the autostrada. Away from it all but near enough to visit many great spots ... Pisa, Lucca and Cinque Terra is a MUST.
There are good hiking trails and nearby tiny medieval villages that are wonderful to explore. It is a very unique experience. I highly recommend a visit.
