We booked to stay at Casa Melo for 6 nights. Review read really well. Reality is something truely different. Bedrooms are dark; bed mattresses were hard and lumpy and must have come from a bygone era. No coffee or tea service in the rooms. No tissues or basic amenities in the room. Shower curtain was mouldy at the bottom. Breakfast was a joke - unless you like sliced packet hams and salami: washed down with weak filter coffee..checked out next day.

Hotel's Favorite
Impressive old building ideally located in city center closed to all restaurants and shops. Staff is very friendly and willing to help. The swimming pool is well exposed under the sun, ideal for sun bathing time. I will definitely recommand this hotel to people coming to this city.

We were not quite sure of the cleanliness of the room. There was an opened bottle of water in the fridge when we arrived and my partner thought there was room for improvement, e.g. the curtains seemed like they could benefit from a wash; darkening of the wall paint above an air vent. For a four-star hotel and for the amount we paid, the room seemed to be a little faded -- as if little had changed since the renovation of the 90s. We were perhaps located in a room that was only 21 meters squared (the smallest dimension of standard-type room), though the photos on the website gave an impression of greater luxury and comfort and our first impression was one of disappointment. There’s quite a difference between a room of 21 meters squared and one of 30 meters squared, so the fact that they are in the same price category seems a little unfair. An unfortunate moment of our stay occurred the last night. Water started dripping from the ceiling at some point during the night and eventually woke us at about 4/5am when the drip became stronger. The person at reception was attentive and tried to find an alternative room but this was not found to be possible. The only solution was a bucket and a towel inside to mask the sound of the water hitting the bottom. This solution wasn't very effective, since the towel became wet and then failed to mask the sound of the dripping. The only reason we returned to sleep was because the water happened to become less strong again. The reason cited for the problem was that the age of the building did not permit construction of suitably protected pipes and that other rooms suffer similar problems. That may be so, but it is your responsibility to maintain the building. Dripping water is completely unacceptable and presents a hazard. In our case the water came perilously close to an electric light switch. The admission that this was not an isolated incident is disconcerting. There were two positives from our experience of this hotel, the breakfast, which was good, with plenty to choose from and the staff, who are friendly and professional.

We had a lovely stay here and recommend this hotel. First of all, the property is extremely cool - I felt like we were staying in an old Portuguese palace. The location is excellent. Extremely close to all the sites in town, and also close to the train station if you wanted to use this as a base to visit other towns by train. We were impressed by the staff as well - everyone we interacted with was warm and helpful. The breakfast had a wide variety. Our room was also spacious and decorated elegantly. We stayed in a room facing the street which can get noisy so if that's a concern for you then I suggest requesting a quiet room.
