We as a group of 6 really enjoyed our experience at Casa Dos Varais. We had a very friendly welcome and then took part in cooking our lunch over a rustic fire and barbecue which was 4 courses. We had wine and port to accompany it and finally champagne to celebrate. We would really recommend a visit or stay, it was so enjoyable!

During our visit in the Douro Valley we looked for a special place to stay and found it in Casa dos Varais. The very old house from the 18th Century is lovingly furnished. You take your breakfast in a wonderful room which takes you in another time, sitting at a big table together with the other guests. We were welcomed ans treated very friendly, enjoyed one of the best port wines and spent a really good time!

Based on former lovely experience of wine and manor house we decided to revisit this year. The owners produce wine, port and different cultural products. The atmosphere was lovely and very welcoming and the couple and staff made us feel “at home”. They passionately produce wine, vegetables and fruits. This time we decided to eat dinner in the house something we did not regret. Even if they don’t list vegetarian food on their menu the cook improvised a delicious seven course vegetarian dinner in their lovely dining room after welcome drinks and appetizers in their drawing room. Before we left the day after we had a tour in the gardens, winery and private chapel on the estate.

This is an 18th century manor house, with many generations of family furnishings. It feels like a privilege to be invited to stay in such a place. When we checked in, we asked about dinner--Marlene said yes, they could offer a meal with traditional Portuguese dishes. Little did we know what a treat we were in for! We followed an accordion player down a candle-lit path to a building with granite vats--where we got to help stomp the grapes that had recently been harvested. It was a Lucy Ricardo moment! Afterwards Marlene brought 8-10 dishes of traditional food--fish, beef, octopus salad, soup, vegetables, bread, followed by a custard dessert and sliced melon--and of course wine. Everything was delicious. An amazing, memorable experience. Our room was huge. The en-suite bathroom is up a small flight of steps; tiny but functional. The B&B is on the main road (Ruta del Vino de Porto), but with the windows closed we were not bothered by traffic noise. The second night we walked across the bridge (20 minutes) and ate dinner in Regua. The breakfast buffet had many options. We had to leave very early on our last morning and Marlene laid out things so we could have a quick breakfast before we left. This will always be a favorite memory of our 2-week vacation in Portugal. Many thanks to Marlene for making us feel so welcome.

This Casa is a living museum where you are transported to another time, another place. We stayed in the General's suite and boy was it grand! Our sitting room could seat 12 with all the historic artefacts setting it off, oh satellite tv as well. The gardens and vineyards are a delightful distraction and the view tremendous. Good is very good and welcome you receive as you enter the casa stays the whole time
