Proprietor and host José is part of the family that has owned this old manor house since 1376. He is gracious and welcoming. The exterior walls at the entrance could do with a lick of paint, but that is merely cosmetic - the rest was impeccable. Our room was enormous, with a good size, comfortable bed and a living room.... Although a bit of a drive from the castle and old town, it is well worth it. jose, warm and welcoming proprietor, runs this inn, which has been in the same family for generations, with excellence. The lobby/living room, dining room, and bedrooms have an understated elegance. Internet is good. Breakfast is plentiful and tasty with nice variety. Stayed late... More

Two nights in an historical paradise. A truly stunning stay in a Casa devoted to the production of great white wines. Individual rooms provide comfort, even in January ! But it is the rooms decorated in antique wallpaper that bewitch. Lovingly restored and eloquently described. Take a tour of these rooms, leading out to a glorious terrace with panoramic views... We arrived after a long journey from Santiago de Compestela and did well to find the property. The rooms were from another era of the chateau variety , lovely and quaint. A bottle of the vineyard best white wine on the patio really relaxed us and then we had the best dinner ever ( two couples) served in the Casa... More

My husband and I chose Casa De Sezim by reading about its opulent charm and also to break our journey from Douro valley to Porto by spending a night a Guimaraes. I have a fascination for houses with character and after seeing and staying in many in Italy and Spain, this manor house held a special fascination for us. This... More

We turned up rather late and luckily they had a room, the reception was friendly and helpful. Our room on the ground floor was a bit musty but this was more than made up for by beautiful furnishings and lovely furniture. This is a delightful museum of a house, with so many memorablia from days gone by. We were able... More

We stayed at Casa de Sezim for 4 nights in early September 2015. We had stayed in a couple of Paradors in Spain, but this was something else - a property that has been in the one family for over 700 years, with a working winery/vineyard. The host, Jose, and his team make you feel very welcome. After checking in,... More

We wanted to slow down after days of running around and reserved a room for two nights. What a great decision that turned out to be. I felt like we took a step back in time when we arrived. You normally only view properties like this, but to have the chance to spend time in such an environment is magical.... More

I have traveled to 45 Countries and this is my all time favorite hotel. This not just a hotel, it feels like you are staying at someones home (small palace). The rooms and interior are exquisite plus the customer service was exceptional, the grounds/ pool are breathtakingly beautiful, & the food was wonderful. I honestly can't brag enough about this... Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Casa de Sezim became the ancestral home of the present family in 1376. The original vellum documents still exist and record that Maria Mendes Serrazinha gave Casa de Sezim to Afonso Martins a descendant of D. João de Freitas a companion of D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal. The document states that Casa de Sezim was given to Afonso Martins in recognition of " As boas graças que dele recebeu e espera receber e por crença que lhe fez", the good works received from him and hope to receive and for his trusting belief. ... more   less
