The hotel was an absolute delight. Beautiful "formal" dining room with excellent food - including different fresh breads every morning. Very comfortable lounge/TV/common area. Our host Anabela couldn't have been more hospitable and welcoming - and spoke perfect English. And her aunt Mariana ... simply lovely people who couldn't do enough for their guests. Can't recommend this hotel highly enough. The hotel itself is worth the drive to Montesinho on the twisty mountain roads. Truly one of the highlights of our two months of touring in Europe.
A little magic in the mountains. 20 mins approx out of Braganca but so worth the extra trip. Montezinho is a small hamlet with just 38 people. The stay at Casa da Edra was the highlight of our month long trip. Anabela and her Aunt, Mariana, are the most gorgeous, hospitably people we have ever met on our travels. All the food was homemade including the daily baked bread, jams, Portuguese sausage. All the other produce comes from other villagers. The dinners were amazing. I had wild Hare and it was one of the best and tastiest dishes I've had. The three other meals were all delicious and quite unique. A note for future reference. These meals will serve at least 2 people. They are HUGE. We made the mistake of ordering one each and could barely eat half of it which seemed such a dreadful waste since it was all cooked especially for us on the day. It doesn't go to waste however and gets recycled for the livestock. A huge bonus is that they make all their own jams, biscuits, breads, pickles etc and are available for sale to take away with you on your journey. The rooms are small but you are in a unique and historic part of Nth Portugal. There are fabulous hikes from here through the 'natural forest'. The other villagers are equally as charming and welcome visitors. …
Other people have already described the lovely house and great food but for me the outstanding thing about Casa de Edra is a welcome and attention throughout the stay that is truly rare. Nothing is too much trouble, smiles are constant on the faces of Anabella and aunt Mariana. Breakfast and dinner are times to laugh and discuss plans and the days events or just to relax and enjoy. It's really like staying with friends and friends they become, very quickly. Incredible.
In one of those locations you could call "the end of the world" there is a pearl called Casa da Edra. Besides the wonderful setting and extremely clean rooms, Anabela and her aunt's friendliness make the experience amazing. One feels right at home. Certainly worth staying at and repeating several times.
Anabela and her aunt Mariana are major attractions here. They couldn't have been more helpful. Casa de Edra is a design triumph, being beautifully modernised inside without detracting from its a very rural setting. The only downside is the tiny size of the well-equipped and quiet rooms. Montesinho is a little village off the beaten track and 1,000 metres up. So there's not much sense in deciding to dine anywhere else, which is just as well because Anabela and Mariana provide superb dinners, and for that matter breakfasts, so staying put is a very good option. You even get given a supply of whatever the day's breakfast speciality was for eating during the day. Really good chestnut muffins if you're lucky - and they keep, Parking outside is no problem and walking in the area is really great. Probably best to choose school holidays or week-ends because Anabela teaches in Oporto during the week. Not that Mariana can't cope, but her English is less proficient for those who like asking questions!…
