The hotel is split across linked blocks. Our one bedroom apartment was in Block B with a sea view from the balcony, which was a good size. It's in a mainly residential area with good transport links. The rooms were spacious - we prefer separate living space when we're on holiday - and kept very clean by the housekeeping team. The aircon was welcome and excellent. The kitchenette has a two ring hob, kettle, microwave, fridge and sink which are adequate - okay for preparing breakfast and snacks but not really if you want to cook full meals and there's no toaster. The communal areas of the hotel are light, bright and attractively furnished. They never felt crowded though I'm not sure what the occupancy rates were like during our October stay. The gardens and pool area are beautiful and well-maintained - one of the reasons I booked this hotel. There's a no sunbed reserving policy which guests kept to as far as I could see. Staff were excellent and friendly. Other things to mention: direct access to the Estrada Monumental from Block A was a boon and the Forum shopping centre which includes a Pingo Doce supermarket a short walk away. I used the hotel gym, which was pretty good although some of the equipment is a bit dated. There's a good range of free weights and it's spacious. Some of the room furniture and bits and pieces around the place are showing signs of age/wear and tear and would benefit from being updated/replaced. On balance we'd stay here again and I'd recommend it if you don't mind being a walk or bus ride away from busier areas.

My husband and I were travelling with our elderly friends, one of which was in a wheelchair. After checking in, we opened the door to one of our allocated rooms (only one was ready when we arrived - C003 in C Block) and our hearts sank at the reality of the room that we were destined to spend the next four weeks in .We felt we had been deceived by the cleverly staged photographs of the twin room with side-sea views. It was so small, hardly room to swing a cat, totally unsuitable for someone in a wheelchair, the balcony was barely big enough for two people and our side-sea view was almost completely blocked by an enormous big tree. There was a door on the wall to an adjoining room which was blocked by a table which was far too big for the size of the room. The tiny television was located in a shelving/wardrobe unit which was side on to the bed and could only be watched by sitting on the edge of the bed which lost its signal if it was moved. Not impressed! Back over the road to reception to express our huge disappointment that the room we had been allocated failed to live up to our expectations ( based on the photographs on the numerous websites we had looked at). To cut a long story short, we were offered upgrades to one-bedroomed apartments in B Block, an additional cost for the four of us of 1,220 Euros (we had to spend our first night in the shoe box). We didn't really have a choice but once we had been shown one of the apartments, it was a 'no brainer' and well worth the additional cost. The apartment was spacious, the bedroom/bathroom could be closed off to the lounge/kitchenette area by a large sliding door. There were two double sofa beds in the lounge, ideal for families. The balcony, with a table and chairs, was big enough for four people. Despite its size, we didn't like the glass sides and the slippy floor tiles although the sea views from the sixth floor were spectacular and a joy to wake up to every morning. Our chamber maids did an excellent job of keeping the apartment spic and span. Bedding and towels were changed on request. Comfortable beds, quality white bedding and white fluffy towels. No bottled water but the tap water was drinkable. There was a large roof terrace with spectacular panoramic views, sun loungers (not the most comfortable) on the sixth floor and just about every day, I had the sole use of it. A bonus if you wanted to get away from the noise from the children in the swimming pool which, for my husband, a keen swimmer, wasn't big enough. We had to check in with our room numbers every morning for breakfast and every evening for dinner and were shown to our table. Masks and plastic gloves were compulsory in the diningroom but could obviously be removed once seated. All the diningroom staff were well trained and attentive, especially Lily, the supervisor, who went out of her way for our disabled friend by showing us to our table and even placing a cushion on her chair for comfort. A big thankyou Lily, especially from our friends. You are a big asset to the team. Plenty of choice for breakfast, hot and cold. Self-service, buffet style. An additional toaster wouldn;t be a bad idea! Again, plenty of choice for evening dinner, some nights dishes better than others but always soup (could be hotter) salad bar, rice, pasta, some form of potato (no chips)

We just come back yesterday from 11 days here, we felt at home from the moment we walked in. They have everything in place with covid and very professional about it as well. Hotel is absolutely spotless Stunning location Lovely rooms Plenty of delicious food And spent half days just sitting outside admiring the views over the Atlantic, and to the mountain region And the staff made the holiday for us, so helpful and always happy Bus stop outside €1.95 everywhere Lovely walks around the area If I had one little thing the hotel could do with, and that colder air con Apart from that I have nothing bad to say about this super hotel Ask for block C with sea views as per my photo

As with all recent reviews, we had a fantastic stay at this hotel. We had changed from our original hotel which had received bad reviews since reopening after lockdown, and we were extremely glad we had changed. From our welcome by the reception staff, the bar/restaurant staff, and room service team, everyone was so pleasant, and seemed genuinely glad to have British visitors back. The Golden Residence is further out of the centre of Funchal, but that isn't a problem as there are frequent buses from right outside the hotel, or from the main road at the back of the block C, at a cost of eu1.95 per trip. However, it has an excellent location, with block A in which we stayed overlooking the sea from the cliff top, with no other buildings to spoil the view. Our room was a very good size, and also contained a small kitchenette hidden behind folding doors, although we only used the fridge and kettle. The "side sea view" was almost a full sea view, but as rooms in this block shared a balcony, the divider would mean that roughly half the rooms may not have such a good sea view. We stayed on a breakfast only basis, and found the breakfast buffet excellent. Covid precautions included wearing masks whilst moving around the restaurant, and using a glove to handle the utensils. We found a number of restaurants in the immediate vicinity, and as mentioned, catching a bus was no problem to get to restaurants further afield. It was also really easy to find a sunbed, either around the pool or in the grassed area overlooking the sea - we never had a problem, even after we had been out until mid-afternoon. Thank you to everyone at the hotel for making our first trip abroad for 18 months such a good one, and we wish you every success for the future.

Very Morden clean hotel with good customer service and management. The staff were helpful in advising us about shops and restaurants in the area. We did have breakfast with the room and dined at the hotel 2 times for dinner. They adhere to clealiness and covid rules to keep everyone safe. We stayed in block C and yes it is worth paying a little extra for it, it has a better sea views. Room tip C119
