The hotel staff is friendly and helpful.
Our room was spacious enough and offered a balcony overlooking the small swimmingpool of the hotel and the parking lot of the neighbouring hotel. The hotel has laminate in the room, and although it was a bit worn out in some areas, it's much more hygienic than carpet. The quality of the bed was good.
Though the room was kept tidy, the sewer air in the bathroom was quite unpleasant.
Breakfast buffet is basic, but offers enough variety.
If you're coming by car: Though the location is the biggest asset of Madeira Bright Star, since you can walk to both the port as well as the city centre within a few minutes, you might find some challenges finding a place to park your car (there's limited space in the hotel's parking lot and one can't make a reservation), so one might need to pay to park in the street from 8 am to 8 pm, or find some other available parking space in the city. Fortunately the receptionist arranged for us that we could park our (quite large...) car on the parking lot of the neighbouring hotel.
The hotel was' bright' airy and comfortable. Spotless, aircon, room with balcony overlooking pool area and carpark of nearby hotel. Sea view if you look hard left! good sized bath with overhead shower, plenty of hot water. TV with lots of channels, only a few of which interested us.
Reception area had free wifi, would have liked access in my room. Small attractive pool and outside area. Ice creams were cheaper than the local park's.
Breakfasts were reasonable, usual fruits (tinned and fresh), yogs, cereals etc cold meats and tasty bread and pastries. In addition you could order a hot (warm) cooked breakfast - limited choice of reasonable quality - you get what you pay for. Fruit squash and coffee were a let down. Unfortunately on a few mornings we did share our breakfast with local ants, they had discovered the buffet as well and were keenly interested in the breads..
Service on the whole was very good, only a couple of staff seemed below par.
Great location, near port and good local restaurants, good sports bar close by if you need. Everything on a hill, so it gives your calf muscles a good work out.
The hotel is in a quiet location and only 10 minutes walk from Funchal town centre (it's quicker to go the back way along the side of a very lovely park). There is a Spar shop just a few minutes walk from the hotel with a good choice of food and toiletries, very reasonably priced.
The hotel has 18 rooms, all with a sea view to the left of each balcony. Rooms ending with '01' have a smaller balcony but still enough room for a table and 2 chairs. We were in 201 and were very pleased with the room. It was modern, immaculately clean and comfortable. There was masses of wardrobe spaces with loads of clothes hangers, a dressing table with mirror and stool, double bed and armchair, plus a table for the cases. Also a fridge and safe (18€ per week). The TV had several English speaking channels. We took our own kettle and coffee etc.
We enjoyed the food. Breakfast included cereals, fresh fruit salads, eggs, sausage, tomatoes, ham, cheese, a good selection of breads (2 toasters available), yoghurt, fruit and cake, plus unlimited orange juice and coffee or tea. You chose your main dish for dinner (choice of 2) at breakfast - no repeats in 7 days. There was also a starter and dessert. Drinks were cheap.
All the staff were friendly and helpful, especially Katya on reception. She arranged our trips (2 full days and one half day for 65€). We also did a Levada walk and visited the Botanical Gardens via a fantastic cable car ride. In a week we visited most towns on the island.
The only negatives were that there was a problem with the hot water for a day and a half and we had to take a couple of cold showers plus the lift broke down twice (but we only had walk up 2 flights of stairs). Yes, the beds creak a bit, but we slept very well all week.
We would recommend Madeira Bright Star. It's reasonably priced, friendly, clean and comfortable.
PS There isn't a fitness centre, so it's not terrible!
Excellent B&B location, situated on the edge of Funchal and before the main hotel district. Turning left outside the hotel, a short up hill walk past a minimarket takes you to a broad, smart avenue with bus stops, where there are a few snack bars, restaurants, tour/trip kiosk, car hire, etc. Turn right past the casino complex for a downhill stroll to Funchal centre of 10/15 mins, passing by a very pleasant St Catherines park on the way. Turning left outside the hotel goes downhill passing Ronaldos museum to a view point on the cliff overlooking the harbour. Strolling further on down a steep incline to the beginning of the seafront promenade, for a pleasant stroll along the front as far as the fort and into the centre.
Suggest taking the hop on / hop off bus tour for orientation, the cable car for Monte and botanical gardens, the fort, and old quarter. Many restaurant with a good standard of food at the kind of prices you’d expect at home say £10 approx per course. My especial favourite is the House Jazz.
Hotel staff are polite, friendly, look after you very well and will do everything they can to make your stay comfortable. Breakfast each morning provided us with fresh fruit, juices, cereals, rolls, cheese, cold meats, pastries, toast... and if you ask for it, a good cooked breakfast consisting of ommelette, bacon, fried egg, beans, sausage or a combination of same. Coffee is acceptable but be prepare to 'smuggle' a good old PG Tips tea bag into breakfast if you fancy a decent cuppa! The hotel is very clean and tidy, small enough to have the personal touch but also big enough to supply you with a beer or wine from the bar on your return to the hotel after a dinner out. Also ideal location for a number of very good quality restaurants such as the Chalet, Berninis and the local pub, The Prince Albert which does superb Pub Grub like, Steak and Guinness Pie, Beef Curry, burgers etc. etc.Hotels rooms are spacious with good TV, large bathroom and beds, hairdrier but no tea or coffee making facilities. Maid service is every day, very efficient with fresh towels and tolietries from friendly staff. A wonderful little hotel up a side street, almost a 'hidden Gem'. 30 minutes taxi transfer from Funchal Airport.
Hotel reception area immaculate, lots of glass walls with an amazing open plan layout.Small garden which is is the shade in the morning with an adequate small pool, was well cared for and tidy.It did catch the evening sun though!!
Room 303(which we were allocated) was spotless.Huge beds, fabulous bathroom with HOT running water no matter what time of day, again very bright and airy.Request for extra pillows was met with no problem.Balcony was great size with really good views towards the sea and the Lido, overlooking the roof of Quinta do penha do Franca.
Very easy access to town..Be warned though many older cab drivers dont know where the place is so its easier to get a cab to the Quinta de Penha do Franca then VERY short hoof around the corner.
Room was made up every day as long as you are out by 10 am and leave the card hanging out the door.Lovely lovely housemaid (who I forgot to leave a tip upon departure):-(.
Very sorry to leave,But will definately be back very soon.
The rooms were very much european 4* star standards and it had all the facilities of a 4* hotel so would not agree with the other reviews, it was simply a small hotel which made the difference in peoples expectations.
The hotel itself was small and very friendly, clean and well kept. The breakfast was plesant and plentiful and the pool was a welcome break from the sunshine. The other nice point for us was that it wasnt a large chain hotel so had a quiet atmosphere and it wasnt very busy so felt very relaxing.
This hotel isnt going to win any awards, but at the same time it is not charign the earth and is doing a very good job at being a small hotel. I would reccomend this hotel to anyone that wants a quiet break, but not to people who are wanting all the facilities and service of an international 4* hotel with the budget of a camping holiday.
Well worth the not many euros it cost us, thank you Bright Star!
