We stayed at the Residencial Mariazinha in the Zohna Vehla (old town) a small 10 bedroom Hotel, bang in the centre of the old town and restaurant area. We booked the Hotel directly from their website, and had no problems at all. The Hotel staff, especially Ms Ligia Pinto were very cheerful and eager to help. I found the Mariazinha to be excellent value for money.
As we spend our days out walking the Levadas and mountains, our need is for a simple, clean, no frills accommodation with a good breakfast. A hotel with all facilities, pools, sports suites etc is all very well, but if they are not used, they are a waste of money. Certainly eating in a Hotel restaurant can vary greatly from excellent to awful, but a bed and breakfast enables you to get amongst the real restaurants and eat what the locals eat. What is the point of travelling hundreds of miles to another country and still eat the same English food.
The breakfast at the Mariazinha was wholly adequate with fruit, cereal, meat and cheese, yoghurts and wonderful bread and rolls, pastries from the Bakery right next door. There was no cooked food, the coffee was excellent, the tea – ask for more than one teabag in the pot!!
The rooms are larger than normal with high ceilings, a larger than average satellite TV and simply furnished. The small Hotel exits directly onto the street, the Rua de Santa Maria. This is one of the oldest streets in Funchal.
We sometimes found the noise at night and early morning to be a little intrusive but not enough to be a problem. There are no views from the rooms, but there is a small outside area and terrace.
There is also a small bar.
The biggest bonus was the position of the Hotel, the best restaurants were literally on the doorstep, the Cable car to Monte was about 5 min away and the town centre and harbour was only 10 min flat walk away.
Ligia tried her very best to help us all but was limited in what she could do. Unfortunately the owner of the establishment doesnt see it as his problem and refused to refund money. perhaps he would like to stay a night himself in a front room. Be warned the hotel demands full payment on check in so make sure you have a quiet room before you pay.
Official complaints to the Tourism Minister has been made about the bar and the hotel , local restaurants and residents are hoping it wil be closed in the near future.
Apart from the above the rooms are large and comfy. A lack of a few toiletries in the bathroom and a repetative plain breakfast were the only minor grievences.
Location is great ( sans bar) and staff are helpful. Do not discount staying here but get a rear room guaranteed or take ear plugs.
The location is ideal right at the heart of all the bars/restaurants serving wonderful food and a must try is the black scabbard fish which hasa very delicate flavour.
The ideal position also boasts a baker on one side and a local pastry/sandwich shop at the main door of the Mariazhina.
Visits around the east and west of the island gives you a real indication of how remote some of the regions are.
Some of the Levada walks are not for the faint hearted by the narrow paths and steep drops not that we went on the walks but speaking to others that had just completed one lets say a cooling pint of beer more was spilled than drank as there hands could not stop shaking.
More like a guest house than hotel (the front desk isn't always occupied). We arrived after 9pm but were welcolmed and shown to the suite on the 3rd floor. No lifts so wouldn't be suitable for the old or infirm. Pleasantly surprised by the size of the accomodation (the bathroom with jacuzzi was alomost as big as the room!
Twin beds pushed together rather than a double bed but for all that comfortable. Seperate "living ares" with sofa and chairs with satelite TV. Efficient air conditioning but almost french doors opening onto to small balcony.
Located within a stones throw of numerous restaurants which was handy in the evening. Also 5 mins walk from the cable car and 10/15 mins form the centre of town.
Certainly for the price you wouldn't find a more conveniently located place to stay on the island.
Would definately go back if visiting the island again.
"Choose any of the several little outdoors restaurants for dinning out. No need to go further. "Read full review
"I would not recommend bedroom no.3 or indeed any other rooms on the 1st floor. Possibly rooms on the 2nd floor might be better re noise."Read full review
