We had a room at the back of the hotel, slightly noisy because of bakery next door working during the night. The room and hotel was very clean, the staff were very friendly and helpful, breakfast every day was repetitive, rolls, cold meat ,cheese, fruit and yoghurts. There being a fantastic bakery next door we were very disappointed not to be offered a selection of pastries and bread for toasting. The location being in the old town was fantastic for restaurants and the cable car and not too far from the harbour. Also it would be nice if they could arrange for a safe in each room.

Husband and I travel for first time to Madeira and I was looking for a place very close to everything, no buses, no high steps, no taxis, just a place where we can go all over with no problem. Well this was the perfect one!, in the middle of downtown with all the restaurants below and a nice short walk to the high main street…I can tell the attention ...the staff…thanks Veronica for lending me empty wine glasses we can use in the room to enjoy with husband when tired after a long day…the room cleaned every day, lovely wood floor and good shower…little fridge ...what more else you need? I recommend this place for sure. Breakfast don’t worry you start with the basic, bread, jam, jelly, juices, coffee and later on the day there are hundreds of places to eat, for us was perfect. Again, thanks to Veronica and all the staff for making a lovely holiday for us!!

A delightful little hotel in the heart of the Old Town and along the most amazing street of 'painted doors'. The Reception staff had all the information you required and were just lovely. I would like to thank them for all their help and advice. The rooms were spacious and clean. The public areas for reading etc. were very well furnished and charming and there was a bookcase for guests to use. The breakfast was fresh and plentiful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to recommend it. The seafront, bus stations and cable car were minutes away and the bus service was excellent. Plenty of restaurants on the actual street to choose from and the food was very good. There was even a bakery attached to the hotel for the occasional pastel de nata treat. Loved the novelty of the painted doors and think I took photographs of every one. The gardens were a delight to visit and a must was the basket ride.

Lovely little street in the Old Town The staff are lovely and very knowledgeable . Only a few minutes walk to the sea front and the cable cars. Plenty of choice for restaurants nearby. Not a hotel if you want to sit by the pool but great if you want to explore Funchal city

My wife and I have recently spent our third holiday in Madeira. This time we took the decision to stay in a Hotel in Madeira town itself instead of one of the large Hotels 2km out of town in the Hotel district.
We stayed at the Residencial Mariazinha in the Zohna Vehla (old town) a small 10 bedroom Hotel, bang in the centre of the old town and restaurant area. We booked the Hotel directly from their website, and had no problems at all. The Hotel staff, especially Ms Ligia Pinto were very cheerful and eager to help. I found the Mariazinha to be excellent value for money.
As we spend our days out walking the Levadas and mountains, our need is for a simple, clean, no frills accommodation with a good breakfast. A hotel with all facilities, pools, sports suites etc is all very well, but if they are not used, they are a waste of money. Certainly eating in a Hotel restaurant can vary greatly from excellent to awful, but a bed and breakfast enables you to get amongst the real restaurants and eat what the locals eat. What is the point of travelling hundreds of miles to another country and still eat the same English food.
The breakfast at the Mariazinha was wholly adequate with fruit, cereal, meat and cheese, yoghurts and wonderful bread and rolls, pastries from the Bakery right next door. There was no cooked food, the coffee was excellent, the tea – ask for more than one teabag in the pot!!
The rooms are larger than normal with high ceilings, a larger than average satellite TV and simply furnished. The small Hotel exits directly onto the street, the Rua de Santa Maria. This is one of the oldest streets in Funchal.
We sometimes found the noise at night and early morning to be a little intrusive but not enough to be a problem. There are no views from the rooms, but there is a small outside area and terrace.
There is also a small bar.
The biggest bonus was the position of the Hotel, the best restaurants were literally on the doorstep, the Cable car to Monte was about 5 min away and the town centre and harbour was only 10 min flat walk away.

Previous reviews have mentioned that this hotel is located in the beautiful old town of Funchal. Unfortunately in recent weeks they have had to contend with a Poncho Bar opening directly across the narrow street which is open till anything from 2am till 630am !! We initialliy had a room at the front and had to move after a sleepness night to the back of the hotel where it is very quiet. Our friends could not move and so actuall left early and moved hotel. There are some 5 rooms at the front and five at the back so moving guests is difficult.
Ligia tried her very best to help us all but was limited in what she could do. Unfortunately the owner of the establishment doesnt see it as his problem and refused to refund money. perhaps he would like to stay a night himself in a front room. Be warned the hotel demands full payment on check in so make sure you have a quiet room before you pay.

Official complaints to the Tourism Minister has been made about the bar and the hotel , local restaurants and residents are hoping it wil be closed in the near future.

Apart from the above the rooms are large and comfy. A lack of a few toiletries in the bathroom and a repetative plain breakfast were the only minor grievences.

Location is great ( sans bar) and staff are helpful. Do not discount staying here but get a rear room guaranteed or take ear plugs.

In what used to be a very derelict part of the old centre of Funchal, a number of good restaurants have sprung up as well as one hostal. Don't let its appearance fool you, though. it's an absolute gem, with optimum price/quality relation. Well located, beautifully renovated, large room and bathroom, very nice and helpful staff, very clean. The only weak point was the breakfast which was a bit minimalist. Overall very recommendable and definitely repeatable.

My wife and myself are just back after 1 wonderful week at the Mariazinha, what a hidden gem located in old Funchal town. There is something magic about staying in an original restored building, we had a twin room looking onto the terrace and with 3 large windows made the room light and airy. Was impressed with the brass plaque at reception door to mark the official opening by the mayor after it was restored. Ligia who owns the property makes you feel most welcome and a delight to talk to.
The location is ideal right at the heart of all the bars/restaurants serving wonderful food and a must try is the black scabbard fish which hasa very delicate flavour.
The ideal position also boasts a baker on one side and a local pastry/sandwich shop at the main door of the Mariazhina.
Visits around the east and west of the island gives you a real indication of how remote some of the regions are.
Some of the Levada walks are not for the faint hearted by the narrow paths and steep drops not that we went on the walks but speaking to others that had just completed one lets say a cooling pint of beer more was spilled than drank as there hands could not stop shaking.

This small hotel/guesthouse offers comfort, cleanliness, service and location by the score. If you seek sea view with balcony, pool side bar and activities, 24 hr room service, etc, this is not for you. We stayed last week for five nights - made to feel welcome, top floor suite spacious and comfortable and location par excellence. Two minutes level walk to centre of town and seafront, surrounded by good value old-town restaurants and bakery next door. How good can it get? Serious quality and value for money! Staff were most helpful during last weekend's storm. Breakfast is adequate and only downside was cock crowing from adjacent property in the morning. Cannot praise hotel or staff highly enough. Would not consider staying anywhere else.

Stayed at the residencial mariazinha for 9 days. Previously been to Madiera twice before stayed once in the hotle zone and once at the Hotel Windsor in Funchal town.

More like a guest house than hotel (the front desk isn't always occupied). We arrived after 9pm but were welcolmed and shown to the suite on the 3rd floor. No lifts so wouldn't be suitable for the old or infirm. Pleasantly surprised by the size of the accomodation (the bathroom with jacuzzi was alomost as big as the room!

Twin beds pushed together rather than a double bed but for all that comfortable. Seperate "living ares" with sofa and chairs with satelite TV. Efficient air conditioning but almost french doors opening onto to small balcony.

Located within a stones throw of numerous restaurants which was handy in the evening. Also 5 mins walk from the cable car and 10/15 mins form the centre of town.

Certainly for the price you wouldn't find a more conveniently located place to stay on the island.

Would definately go back if visiting the island again.
