Was slightly apprehensive after reading the reviews and admittedly the hotel looks dated from the outside but we could not have had a better stay. The receptionists were all very helpful and friendly. Our room was on the 11th floor with fantastic sea and city views, it was magical seeing Funchal town lit up of an evening. The room was exactly as shown on the hotel room pictures and immaculately cleaned every day. There was a small kitchen for self catering and a small balcony with table and chairs, perfect for the views. The pools and pool areas were kept clean and there were plenty of loungers. There is a heated indoor pool too. The bus stops for travelling in each direction are no more than five minutes walk away. There is a large supermarket five minutes walk called Pingo Dolce, very reasonable. It is an easy walk into Funchal itself and there are places to walk to in a westerly direction too. I would have no hesitation in returning to this hotel.

We had a big renovated room with a magnificent sea view from the 8th floor, room cleaned every day (sometimes twice). The hotel is dated but the staff is helpful and nice, the breakfast is excellent for what you pay. There are 2 outdoor and one indoor pool, Jacuzzi-hot tub, gym and the sauna for free, location is not bad, 30 min walk to Funchal and nearby is a bus station with direct bus to the city. All in all we enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend the Bourganvilla.

I cannot believe the negative reviews on here for the Buganvilia. We have just returned from a 1 week stay end of November/start of December and it was wonderful. With regards to the “dated” comments, they are working on the reception area – looks like a totally new entrance will be ready soon. We were on the 10th floor (room 1001) and had the most spectacular view out to sea and also across the whole of Funchal town. The room was fantastic. Really large – 2 wide single beds, dressing table, large wardrobe, kitchenette (fridge, microwave, hob, kettle, loads of crockery & cutlery), bathroom with excellent shower. We could not have asked for a better room. We stayed half board. Breakfast was in the hotel restaurant and evening meal was in next door hotel just a stroll up the hill (there are lots of hills in Madeira!). The breakfasts were lovely – what you would expect, plenty of choice – cereals, porridge, eggs, bacon, fruit, croissants. Everything worked – tea machine, toaster. The evening meal was in the Estrelicia hotel and again everything you could ask for. All food was great. The waitresses were excellent – no bother for them to help. The hotel has an outside pool with sun beds (and this week lots of sun too). The hotel shares an indoor pool, gym, jacuzzi and sauna with the Estrelicia hotel. When I refer to the “hotel next door” I literally mean a hotel attached to the Buganvilia by a garden to the rear of the hotel. It takes 2 minutes to walk. The indoor pool is lovely and warm. There was entertainment provided each evening. The hotel is located near the sea front and the Lido. It is about 30 minutes stroll into Funchal town centre. There are frequent buses into Funchal if you prefer not to walk. We could not have asked for a better hotel and a better week in Madeira.

Good points : Mostly friendly staff with the exception of one grumpy lady on reception one day, but hey, we call all have an off day, they are a credit to the hotel. Rooms are clean Plenty of food at breakfast, only stayed B & B but went to the restaurant for dinner on a few occasions. Semi decent sea view from the 5th floor Bad points : The pool was being refurbished throughout our first week and only opened on the Friday before we went home. I know that other pools were available, but it would have been nice to be able to use the one at your hotel. Noise from refurbishment being done on other floors within the hotel. Rooms were tired, need urgent upgrade and were very small, especially when for a two week stay. We did ask for an upgrade, and would have been happy to pay for it, this is where we encountered the grumpy member of staff, we were told that it was not possible to upgrade as the hotel was full (I doubt that it was), I think Mrs grumpy just could not be bothered to find out. We only had 4 coathangers on arrival, thankfully, housekeeping supplied more when we asked, but it should have been spotted when the room was cleaned prior to us checking in. Kitchen was small but functional, well sort of. A kettle with a round bottom that set off on a tour of the hob when it got close to boiling. No cups provided, we had to buy our own, First hotel that I've ever stayed in that didn't offer tea/coffee making facilities, with the exception of the mobile kettle. No extraction in the bathroom, getting dried was a problem, it ended up like a sauna The buffet restaurant was very good and the food was a welcome change from what every other restaurant on Madeira had on the menu's, it was also a very reasonable price, so what's the grumble? Being charged 8 Euro's for one SMALL local beer and one Small shandy, a bit of a rip off. One thing that was out of the control of the hotel but it did have an impact on our stay was the roadworks taking place outside on the road, I know the hotel couldn't do anything about it but it would have been nice for Tui to have advised us when we booked, it has been ongoing for sometime by the looks of it. We are not really complaining, I guess we are used to staying in better quality hotels, especially on our many trips to the USA. We won't be coming back to Buganvilla, a trip to Madeira was a 'one off' nice place but too many hills and apart from restaurants, not a lot of anything to to. Lovely people, lovely scenery but only so many trips to Funchal and tours to take in, we did it all, cable cars, caves, east and west tours, after that it got boring, it's back to the USA for us in future

Dear Mr and Mrs Trevor, We thank you very much for your opinions, as all are valid for the process that is part of our commitment: constant improvement of our services. We have checked internally and in fact more hangers were placed in your room. Crackery and cutlery are part of the material in the kitchenette. Cups are located in the upper cupboard and the housekeeper, as soon as she had your information, removed them and put them in plain sight. In fact, repair works are carried out by the the town hall services on the main street. Our complex have 3 swimming pools, 2 are outdoor and 1 indoor, In october an urgente intervention was required in one of them. The hotel had an occupancy rate of 82%, during October wich did not allow us the possibility of upgrading your room. One of the floors was under renovation and the few vacant rooms were on the same or lower floors, making it impossible to move to a higher floor or a better view. We regret that this possibility did not occur. We thank you again for the referenced points and although the Island is small and quickly visited we wish you keep very good memories of your days spent here.
