Detailed Reviews
Basic ,dated ,functional . As reflected in price.
Room good size. Firm beds . Bathroom with bath and removable showerhead. Towels a bit stiff .Reception manned 24 hrs. Cleaners efficient. (gave me extra blanket)Breakfast also very basic ,but I added hot milk into the oats, topped with dried apricots (I bought) and became better!
Location good for old town but over a supermarket that has deliveries starting at 7am.Noisy road. Had plane not been delayed resulting in arriving well after dark, I would have realised that the rooms to rear have balconies, ,face the sun ,so warmer, and not over the supermarket loading bay or road.
It was so quiet on New Years Eve and New Years day though.
WiFi on 1st floor only
Major downside.
No smoking room First two nights stale smoke leaking from nearby room or funnelling up from outside reception (Third floor room) Other 3 nights ok. Last morning stale smoke in breakfast room ,emanating from adjacent bar area.
Only for that reason I would not stay there again

We came to Funchal for two nights, and our travel agency booked us this Pension. First, I have to say that the location is really perfect, right in the center of Funchal. Everything is nearby, we were able to do the main attractions on foot, it was super convenient. But unfortunately, the Inn itself leaves something to be desired in some respects...
The room we had overlooked a small inner courtyard. It was quiet, but our friends were on the street side, just above a stop. They were awakened early by the sound of cars stopping and leaving, a real parade! So pay attention to this detail if you want some peace of mind. The room itself was quite spacious, there were 4 of us and we each had our own bed. The balcony, on the other hand, just overlooked the courtyard, not really a nice view. But it's okay.
The big black spot is the lack of air conditioning. With the heat, the room quickly became stifling, so we slept badly. On the bathroom side, it wasn’t too bad either... Traces of limestone in the shower, and the bathtub enamel crumbling in some places, you could feel it had been patched up quickly. And then, the tap water, it came out all cloudy... We didn’t dare drink it, even to brush our teeth, we were not reassured.
In short, if you’re just looking for a central place to put your bags and visit the city, the location is perfect. But when it comes to comfort and cleanliness, don't be too demanding.

Residencial Greco was very basic, and a bit crumbling and old in the corners. The room was quite clean, and there was cable TV and a decent breakfast. The biggest drawback though was the noise. While it was centrally located and near the city centre, there must have been a bar nearby because people were yelling and hollering throughout the night, and it sounded as though they were standing directly outside my window. Even with my iPod blasting I still couldn't drown it out enough to rest, which made for a rather lousy night.

I went to Funchal in December and stayed at the Greco guest house. I was scared because the reviews were terrible, but as it was very cheap and right in the center of Funchal, I took the risk and went with my wife and daughter.
When we got there, the reception was friendly and attentive, the room was super clean and smelled good, nothing to write home about regarding the cleanliness of the room. There is no bathtub and the construction is old, but everything is functional and the water is always very warm.
Breakfast wasn't a quality buffet but it wasn't as bad as you see in the reviews, it was a breakfast with little variety but enough to start the day with a full stomach.
The elevator works perfectly contrary to what they say.
There is no private parking, and it is impossible to park your car on the street because we are in the city center and the amount you have to pay per hour to be on the street is quite expensive, but the hotel staff once again was impeccable and they spoke to another hotel to help you. I store the car for just €5 for 24 hours.
Negative or less good points, lack of Wi-Fi, no swimming pool.
Whether it was as bad as they said I don't know, but my experience was quite positive.

My daughter and I spent an amazing week in Madeira and at the Greco hotel. The hotel is located right in the centre of Funchal, next to a Continente supermarket - very handy. About 10 min on foot from the Promenade, the beach and the bus stops. Our room was huge, spotlessly clean, quiet, with comfy beds and comfy bathroom. The breakfast was sufficient, with amazing coffee. The hotel boasts a really pleasant roof terrace - perfect for stargazing or just relaxing in the evening. A massive credit goes to the Staff - all very friendly, very helpful, always smiling and polite. I think this hotel has become our favourite in the Sé area of Funchal and we will definitely be back.

Very warm welcome, helpful staff who always did their best to enable us to have an excellent stay. Hotel well located in the city center, good hot water, the bus lines are not very far, next to a small, very practical supermarket. For me it was perfect, thanks again to all the staff, we will come back.

Terrible. To begin with, the doorman seemed to be dying of cirrhosis and was antipathetic. We were told there were no parking spaces when the Guest House park was full of vacant spaces. We were charged another 50 cents for using the multibank to pay the hotel fees. In the Reservation said double room and then they gave us a room with 4 single beds. The room smelled badly, and it was dirty, including with pastilles on the floor and ants in the trees. In the bathroom there were ants on the walls and the taps only stopped lying in water in certain very specific positions. There was no internet in the rooms, only on the first floor and OUT of the rooms. We had to put together two single beds to make a double one and ended up sleeping three nights with immense discomfort and terrible pain. I don't recommend it to anyone.

It wasn't the hotel I originally booked and I was very worried when I read the reviews. Luckily,as it turned out, there was no need to worry, the room was basic but comfortable, comfy bed, amazing views, friendly and helpful staff, satisfactory breakfast, nice dinner, the best location-5minutes from anything and everything. It was an amazing holiday, and I remembered again why I don't read reviews:)

Very good place, i’ve been there 3 nights and i felt very comfortable, (unexpected, looking at most of reviews),
All i’m saying especially considering the price, very low.
Kind staff.
Only “bad” thing is the breakfast, few things to eat and not very good quality.

We had a room on the 3rd floor for a week. The condition of the hotel is okay and the staff is really friendly. Beds and towels cleaned every day,(you can also ask them not to do it every day) There was a huge balcony with the morning sun coming in and some cahirs and a table.
Breakfast is just basic, nothing special, but was still good for us for the starting of the day
The location is perfect. The old town is close to the sea and it was very easy to move around town. Would recommend for others :)
