Detailed Reviews
Like many things in life, this hotel has pros and cons. We enjoyed staying there, but there were aspects that underwhelmed us. Compared to the two hotels we had in Lisbon, both rated 5 stars, this is two levels below them.
The hotel is very quiet, so sleep won't be disturbed by rowdy bar patrons or traffic. The room was very clean, with bed and bath linens that looked, smelled, and felt clean and fresh. We liked the small enclosed balcony/sitting area that is separated from the main part of the room by French doors, but we saw no heating/cooling for it. The views cannot be beat as the hotel is perched atop a mountain with gorgeous scenic vistas on both sides. The reception employee was friendly, welcoming, informative, and helpful. Parking is free and readily available. The wifi worked reliably and easily. If you're looking for one hotel where you can spend all your vacation time, this might be a place to consider.
If you intend to drive around the island and discover small restaurants or bars, this is possibly not the right place for you. It is a short but potentially dangerous drive from Funchal center. We had a rental car and don't drink much, no more than 2 glasses of wine each (tops), but if you tend to consume a bit more (or something stronger) you may want to rethink staying here and driving yourself around. The road is winding and unforgiving, with a dangerously steep side. The breakfast buffet was unremarkable. We tend to eat breakfast early and prefer muesli, yogurts, breads, and fruits for breakfasts instead of typical hot American fare. Our second morning, there was only one spoonful of muesli, and no attendant in sight. Their croissants were nothing like the real pastries and you'll buy better ones at Walmart. The coffee comes only from a machine. The hotel's pool is probably safe to use due to a strong stench of chlorine that permeated the lobby and hallways. If you like to charge your devices next to your bed at night, you won't be able to do that here. Outlets were on the other side of the room.
Bottom line: this hotel was okay, but if we are ever fortunate enough to return to Madeira, we will stay somewhere else.

We had visited Eira Do Serrado twice before as a day visit and liked the place.
On this visit we decided to spend a night there.
We reached the hotel at 12.30pm. The first thing the receptionist told us was that we were early and the check in time was 2pm. The hotel was nearly half empty and it made no sense to make an unwelcome remark. He proceeded to check us in and without asking how I would like to pay, he took the money of my credit card with which I had guaranteed the booking. He gave me a receipt without asking me to input my pin.
However the location of the hotel is super and the view from the room was breathtaking. All the rooms face the valley which houses Curral das Freiras. There is a scenic view point about half a mile from the hotel, from which you can see the whole of Crurral.
The hotel has a neat swimming pool and jacuzzi which we used. The hotel is isolated. Hence dinner was at the hotel. The menu was limited but the young lad serving us did his best to serve us a simple but enjoyable meal.
Our room was clean and comfortable.
Breakfast was self serve and there were the usual things in plenty but quality of some of the products was lacking.
After checking out, we took the walking path into the valley to reach Crurral. We descended about 1200 ft which took us about an hour. We took the yellow bus back to the hotel where our car was parked.

A beauiful place to stay and explore the nun’s valley below.with clear weather the view on the valley and surroundings is breathtaking…but you got to like isolated places at night..the comfort of the room compensates largely for that.in daytime lots of tourist buses and cars visit the place to enjoy the view at the “miradouro” viewpoint..and a drink or bite in the cafe that afheres to the hotel-restaurant.from the dining room you enjoy good food at very acceptable priced but the view through the panoramic windows is even free!
To get there may be challenging for some.as the -well signed and asphalted-road leading to the place is rather narrow and winding!
If 1thing is sure…i cannot wait to get back there!!

The only positive point is the place where it is located!
Very poor cleaning: starting with the SPA, which has not been cleaned for a long time (all the glass has not been washed for months; at the foot of the pool there is a kind of water tank where the water that comes out of the pool is filtered, now there it seems it has never been cleaned, and is visible to customers; the Turkish bath is not in operation (without any warning); the water in the pool is cold (since it is an indoor pool and the toilets in the EC's should be warmer). of the rooms are dirty (it seems that the cleaning is done very well).
We booked two rooms. In one of them, the hairdryer was burnt out, so they added another one, without removing the other one, or putting up any warning. So we called without knowing anything and in addition to none of the dryers working, the plug started to smell really bad!
Two people stayed in each room and only one of them had bathrobes to go to the spa. After we requested two more robes, it took a long time to bring them.
The hotel has a neglected, sloppy look! It is perfectly clear that there is no investment in repairing/restoring/renovating it.
The place itself is magnificent! But the conditions aren’t even enough for 3 stars!

Disappointed by this hotel/spa...
No response to my emails before our arrival, no indication of arrival conditions.
Once there, the spa is not very clean. The sauna/hammam is optional (10€ per person, per day in addition and of course the hammam did not work) we paid for the option to activate it but the other guests of the hotel also took advantage of it for free. suddenly... The next day, the jacuzzi was not working... so we left.
The half-board meal is very simple, little choice, zero quality, poor services... the waiter is not attentive and just wants to go quickly...
The only good point is the view

This hotel may have been a 4 star in the 60s or 70s but it definitely isn't one now in my opinion!
The "spa" is not useable!
The balcony in the room was large with an awesome view but was filthy and in need of a serious pressure washing!
The room furniture is adequate but very basic and old!
The room itself was kept clean but is definitely showing its age and there were numerous water stains on the ceilings and walls with some moldy areas.
The hotel in general is tired and worn outI!
The quality of the breakfast is embarrassingly bad in every imaginable way!
The service and food in the dining room in the evening was good.
The very few staff at the hotel are nice and seem to be doing the best they can under the circumstances.
The location is breathtaking and worth a visit but I would recommend just doing a day trip and avoiding this sorry establishment.

Hotel & Spa Eira do Serrado is on a prime spot at the viewpoint offering spectacular views acorss the valley to both sides, Funchal and Currral das Freiras.
The hotel has comprehensive facilities (pool open - sauna and whirlpool/Jaccuzi closed due to Covid) and spa treatments that need to be booked in advance.
Large and comfortable rooms with a balcony and great valley view. Good restaurant serving buffet breakfast and dinner. Dinner (a la carte) is really of great quality and value and can be recommended. Super-friendly personnel - clear go!

I spotted this secluded hotel in the middle of a sublime landscape 2 years ago during a walk to the viewpoint. I really wanted to disconnect in this place which for me must have been full of charm. What a desappointment!. The welcome was cold (the receptionist did our check-in while sorting things out on the phone), the swimming pool hours, the towels, we got them because we had to ask. We settle in and we can't take a step without the floor creaking, we say to ourselves too bad for 3 days... but it was unbearable, we had to change rooms and there, the receptionist was very responsive and we moved to another much nicer room with a terrace, all rooms have a superb view.
We decide to take advantage of the swimming pool (open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.), it is 4 p.m., it is covered. You have to go back and claim. Then we want to use the jacuzzi, it doesn't work. For the hammam and the sauna, we have to ask again because they must be manually activated and therefore this requires waiting 30/45 minutes for them to rise in temperature, more precisely the sauna because the hammam never worked and smelled even bad. On the 2nd and 3rd day, we asked directly when we got back from hiking to have the pool area activated. This has never happened to us in a 4 star hotel.
Concerning breakfast, it is self-service, no reception, non-existent staff. Everything is basic and of poor quality. Industrial orange juice, no variety, cardboard pastries. I have never seen so much waste on the plates. We bite into our croissant or sausage and let it go. Once again, in a 4 star hotel, you cannot offer such a mediocre breakfast. In short, this hotel could be a real gem with a real touch of modernity and more attention to quality. As things stood, the reality was very different from what I had imagined.

Normally friendly reception.
Noisy hotel doors to hit little soundproofing for those who will rest.
Breakfast Medium the basic without anything appealing of the region limited employees only lift the table at the end there is no communication with the guests.
Hotel seems to be working just because it just stays.
Room without air conditioning for the place in the mountain is not understood. Arrogant coffee shop employee of evil with life all you ask is a problem or that you ask should give place to who
I really need to work. Good parking.

Very nice hotel and better restaurant. When we arrived the area was full of tour busses loaded with short time visitors. We thought this is not the mountain resort we thought it was, however late in the afternoon after the last bus departed the place became very quiet. We were concerned about the restaurant as it had been turning through bus loads of day trippers for lunch. Once again we were pleasantly surprised with a nice selection of wines, attentive professional service and excellent food. I highly recommend both the hotel and restaurant.

Hi, the restaurant prices were a tiny bit more expensive than eating out, but not too bad. The spa treatments are extra but the pool is included. The walk to the village below is a steep downward 45 mins...but factor in the very steep return journey!!! We hired a car so I'm afraid I can't help with taxi costs.
I recommend having a vehicle if you're staying at this location.
Hello, there is passage, a narrow stone road, just behind the hotel that leads you directly to the small village of "Curral das Freiras". This a great and free walking tour that you can do all by yourself. The access from downtown Funchal is very good and paved but a little difficult for big vehicles. Enjoy the view from different Spots.
Hello Janey, We'd hired a small Fiat 500 with two of us on board. Because of the steep roads the little engine had to be in first gear sometimes. Any more passengers and it would have been a long push!
The road up to the hotel is OK, and it felt safer driving up there than taking the bus, which was scarier than a shark attack! Just keep the speed down, and in the bendy bits keep in a lower gear. No worries about going over the edge though, as at a low speed there are more than enough barriers to keep you safe.
And enjoy the hotel. Just beautiful.
