Lovely hotel in the suburbs of Funchal. The hotel is colonial in style with lots of local wooden floors and paneling . Extensive and beautiful gardens surround the hotel which are located in a quiet area 10 minutes from the centre of town. The rooms are spacious and all face South with views of the garden.A slight criticism would be the rooms are a little dated. Only 2 electrical points and you needed to put the kettle on the floor when using it. The TVs are quite old models but functional. Breakfast is plentiful with an extensive menu and really good ingredients . The restaurant food is also excellent quality and value for money, with a chef and team who know how to cook and present food. This brings me to the staff. Whether it’s the reception, cleaning, garden, transport drivers or restaurant staff, all are professional and helpful. They help make this hotel what it is. We enjoyed our mid winter break and the hotel and staff helped us recharge our batteries.

We live in U.K. and were looking for a short Pre-Springtime break which offered sunshine, good food, some form of cultural history and excellent facilities combined with a relatively short flight from UK.
When searching we realised that Madeira could be an ideal candidate and stumbled on Quinta Jardins Do Lago in Madeira as it checked most the boxes.
We were not sure what Quinta meant but discovered that a Quinta describes a rural property, especially those with historic manors and palaces typically found on the outskirts of towns in Portugal, which aptly defines Quinta Jardins Do Lago.
Top line, this was one of the best experiences we have ever had the good fortune to enjoy.
We arrived at the Hotel, via a short Taxi ride from Madeira Airport which cost €35.00 which was organised for us by Quinta Jardins Do Lago.
The Front of house reception staff were charming and could not have been more helpful.
Our room was on the 3rd (top) floor and the view from our balcony was spectacular.
The room was very well designed with traditional Portuguese décor including Polished wooden floors and high-quality furnishings, it was totally in keeping with the historic setting. It was also comfortable and relaxing, with a Super King-sized bed along with a larger bathroom with twin sinks, a bath and “his’n’ hers” white bathrobes.
It had a small balcony which was nice to sit out on when the mood took us.
From the balcony the views are amazing with no high rises in sight. Just a myriad of homes, predominantly white, dotted across the landscape with the lovely (classic) “monk and nun” style terracotta roofs reminiscent of properties in the Mediterranean and North African regions.
As as side bar, the rooms have highly effective blackout curtains so you can get a good night’s sleep without the light disturbing you. Although there is a charming dawn chorus which you might cathartic.
The pool area we could see tucked away at the end of the garden in amongst what looked like a forest of palm trees.
The star of the Gardens though is Colombo a 68-year-old giant female tortoise imported by the Owners from the Galápagos Islands as a baby! Story has it that when the Ship landed, she was concealed in a large pocket of the Owner but shes really taken to living in Madeira!
The general manager told us that when the island suffered from devastating forest fires a couple of years ago, returning guests called the hotel in their droves. Not to check the hotel was still open but to check on Colombo’s well-being!
Maybe an apocryphal story but during COVID, due to few people being around, Colombo suffered a “nervous breakdown” such was the shock of being seemingly abandoned and missing human company!
The Manor House is where Main meals are served and enjoyed by guests. Built in the 18th Century it is dripping with historical features. We couldn’t determine some of the fine Art dotted around the Hotel, but it was impressive.
Dining here was excellent albeit reasonably expensive.
The serving staff once again were charming and attentive and the menu choices excellent. It really felt quite opulent to be dining here and the food arrived in style, some dishes served under a silver dome (cloche) which is taken away with great aplomb!
They have eminently captured the history and style of the house in the dining experience extremely capably.
For breakfast there is a terrace some under the shelter of a lovely Veranda reminiscent of Colonial India with a superb buffet spread and your choice of eggs with, if you ask, a Cappuccino and/or Latte plus Prosecco with Orange Juice for a Mimosa to kick start your day!
The starched white Napkins, elegant fine bone china and high-quality cutlery add that additional touch of class. It really feels like a throwback to a bygone era.
There is also a priceless tiled mosaic on the wall as well as the stunning garden views, of course!
Colombo is often positioned close by!
Daytime dining is by the shallow but swimmable pool.
The food is particularly good quality and Al Fresco if you so choose, but shade is available with quality Sun Loungers with extremely comfortable mattresses with fresh Towels provided.
There is a Bar by the Pool plus what looks like an imitation of the Bridge of Sighs in Venice leading from one side of the Pool to another.
Taking the time to explore the grounds during your stay is essential. They really are the most magical feature of the property with many little sun traps and imaginative spots or nooks and crannies to enjoy, or just sit and read there.
The gardens are effectively an attraction in themselves and draw many people to stay at the hotel.
With over 500 rare species you are sure to find Plants, Shrubs or Trees from all corners of the Globe.
Should it rain or be chilly, the Manor House has plenty of comfortable seating as well as a library and games room including pool or snooker table.
We spent some time by the pool just soaking up the sun but remember to take/apply the right factor level of sunscreen as it can get extremely hot.
A key point to remember is that the hotel also has regular transfers, or a Shuttle Service, going into town at various times of the day and the staff on front desk are full of great advice for day trips too.
It is worth booking these Shuttles early as they are understandably extremely popular!
Taxi’s back from Funchal (as of March 2024) cost in the region of €8.00.
Overall, it was a truly memorable holiday and exceeded our expectations by some considerable margin.
We shall return, if only to see Colombo again!

A hotel with a beauty from times gone by. Wonderful garden that makes you want to stay and admire the flowers all day. The swimming pool is very large and air-conditioned, the interior spaces are extremely elegant and well-kept. The staff is extremely kind, we had a one year old baby and they filled him with smiles and attention. The day we arrived we arrived late at night and they brought dinner to our room, also thinking of the child, bringing him a delicious soup. I will definitely be back, couldn't recommend it enough

An outstanding hotel set in beautiful botanical gardens. From the minute we arrived we were cocooned by the wonderful staff. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they seemed to anticipate our every need. Each and everyone of them knew our names and were always warm and friendly. The views from both bedrooms we stayed in were magnificent, with gardens, sea and hills. The rooms were beautifully furnished, always displaying fresh bird of paradise flowers. Quiet and relaxing by the pool, there was no need to move from the comfortable sunbeds as we were provided with a push button to call the poolside bar for drinks and food. There was also a poolside library with a good selection of up to date books. There were many other places in the gardens where chairs and sunloungers had been thoughfully positioned for relaxation. All dietry needs are catered for in the exceptional restaurant, with outside dining and live music 2 nights a week. The star attraction is Colombo the Galapagos tortoise, 66 years young who lazed around in his beautiful garden, always available for conversations, cuddles and photos! A fantastic stay at a most elegant boutique hotel. Very highly recommended and we can fully understand why the guests we spoke to return year after year.

We absolutely loved the Quinta Jardins do Lago! It was like landing in paradise - the sub-tropical gardens are beautiful and the hotel is so perfectly kept and the staff are very friendly and helpful. We particularly loved the superb breakfasts served either in the Jade Room or out on the beautiful terrace or in the garden, the food was magnificent. We also enjoyed one evening meal in the lovely restaurant which was delicious. We especially loved Colombo, the gorgeous giant tortoise who resides in the hotel garden. Our room was lovely and we enjoyed sitting out on our terrace with a view of the garden and the swimming pool was also a lovely place to relax, there is also a jacuzzi and we enjoyed lunch and drinks around the pool and there are always more than enough lounging chairs to choose from. We just loved everything about the Quinta and very much hope to return.

This was our first visit to Madeira and we were really pleased that we chose to stay at the charming Jardins Do Lago hotel, which is located in a peaceful environment in the hills surrounding Funchal. There is a shuttle bus to & from the town and taxis are very reasonable at around £8. We stayed four nights in a Standard Room which had a lovely view over the hotel’s magical gardens. Our room, which was very well appointed, was well above the average hotel standard room. It had plenty of space. There was a very comfortable seating area inside our room, next to the patio doors, and a terrace outside with a table & chairs.
The breakfast, which was served on the hotel’s terrace, comprised of a buffet and a hot menu. There was lots of choice. It was delicious. Dinner in the restaurant was also excellent. There was a pianist in the lounge which served aperitifs before dinner.
There was superb service and wonderful staff at this hotel. All staff were very warm & welcoming. The service at the reception desk was always very helpful at making any bookings eg taxis, as required.
The facilities were excellent. There is a beautiful swimming pool area with a bistro which served light meals and drinks.
We had a really memorable stay here and would thoroughly recommend this hotel. We hope that we will return in the not too distant future and see Columbo again!

Every aspect of staying here was just perfect and it all started with when we booked. Nothing was too much trouble and the help and advice we received during the booking process and during our stay made our stay here wonderful. The room was delightful with views over the tropical garden - it was immaculately cleaned every day and the turn down service with choccies was an added bonus. Breakfast was always delicious with a fantastic range of goodies to eat. We were thrilled that the hotel had left us a bottle of champagne for our 25th wedding anniversary - it was most unexpected but very much appreciated (sadly I don’t drink and my husband doesn’t like champagne - so we gave it to one of the reception staff who had gone out of her way to try to track down a book I was after!). The most fabulous thing about this hotel ….. the staff! I genuinely think they are the most friendly and helpful people I’ve ever encountered - so thank you to them above all else; you really made our stay very special.

Exquisite service combined with fine dining in the most beautiful gardens. We had the privilege of staying 11 nights and there isn’t anything that could be improved upon. Breakfast can be taken inside or outside within the gardens and the precision of table setting and white linen gave an air of quintessential England. A Harris Hawk and handler stroll the gardens to ward off uninvited birds at mealtimes. The pool area is immaculate with more than ample sunbeds and poolside service. A free shuttle bus can be booked and takes you into the Old Town of Funchal. Walking down is easy but you need to be a true Olympic athlete or mountain goat to hike back up 😂 Fine dining at its best with a great selection of menu. All bedrooms have a view of the breathtaking gardens and of course Colombo the giant tortoise rests quietly in his own space…. Just an amazing experience

We have recently returned from our second visit to Quinta Jardins do Lago and it was just as good as last year.
Upon arrival we received a sincere and friendly greeting and checked in promptly. Dara then accompanied us to our superior room on the second floor which was spotless and included flowers, fruit basket and water, plus tea/coffee making facilities.
Daily housekeeping was spot on, including an evening turn-down service with daily chocolates placed on our pillow. Service at breakfast was fabulous and friendly – this year there was a mixture of buffet and dishes cooked to order from the breakfast menu. You could choose to sit inside in the Breakfast Room, on the veranda, or the gardens.
We enjoyed relaxing by the pool area which is so tranquil and there is never a problem finding an empty sunbed. We also enjoyed strolling around the magnificent gardens, taking time to say ‘hello’ to Colombo! 🐢
We met many other lovely guests of different nationalities, some of whom we had befriended last year, and enjoyed a couple of evenings out together.
We only dined in one evening at the hotel, which was nice, as we personally like trying different restaurants during our holiday. However, we did enjoy a few relaxing lunches at the Colombo Bistro.
All the staff throughout the hotel are so friendly and helpful, but we would particularly like to say a special thanks to both Dara and Susana.
We very much hope to return sometime in 2024. 🤞

Returned yesterday after 6th visit. As mentioned previously the hotel is surrounded with lush, delightful tropical gardens. Since our last visit there have been changes to the eating arrangements in the hotel. During the day there is an extensive food and drinks menu available round the pool in the Colombo bistro. My husband really liked the seafood linguine which he had on our first day . The bistro is open until 6pm in winter and 7pm in summer. In the evening there is fine dining in the Berresford restaurant. There is a new chef and many new waiter staff who all provide efficient and friendly service. We had half board and dining slots have to be booked in 1/2 hourly slots from 7.00pm. There are now 4 courses..a starter, fish/seafood, meat and dessert .You can have all 4 courses or only 3. We especially appreciated the innovative seafood/ fish dishes which are not available in other restaurants to which we have been in Funchal. There are padded sun beds available around the pool and in the gardens . There was never a problem getting one. The pool is heated and the turtle thermometer in the pool a few days ago was showing 85degrees. We were delighted to see that Colombo the aged tortoise is still alive. He has his own special enclosure. We noticed him being ‘lovingly’ fed by one of the garden staff a few days ago. All in all we had a great time and were very sad to leave. All being well we will return again next year.
