Covid 19 is bad news for hotels - really low occupancy and really low income. But, you would think, one silver lining for guests: New arrivals don’t have to wait for the room of the departing guests to be made ready as 80% of the rooms weren’t occupied last night ! Not so at the Jardins d’Ajuda - I arrived at half past 11
and had to wait nearly an hour for my room to be cleaned.

Other than that be aware the hotel is a 10 minute bus or taxi ride from the city centre. Taxis are €10 a ride, a one week city bus pass is €22 so load up the Moovit app (I already had it on my phone from London), find somewhere to buy your bus pass and you’re all set ! (If you can’t find a bus pass a single ticket is €1.95)

Midrange hotel, good corona management, nice buffet breakfast, good strong WiFi, slightly hard beds, strong shower, enough minimal toiletries (but I recommend bringing your own or you can buy at nearby supermarket), nearby shopping centre, restaurants everywhere - the Indian with a Nepali chef right under the hotel looks primitive but is really excellent, though you are really spoilt for choice both within easy walking distance and elsewhere in Funchal and will want to try more ! On the island cheap white is better than cheap red (meaning: avoid house red) though the more upmarket red can be excellent.

Hotel is situated at the far end of Funchal but unusually just a few steps or short slope to hotel.

Breakfast and dinner buffet style adequate ,not Great.
Spotlessly clean but it is dated (dark furniture etc.)
Large room with bath and balcony in main hotel ,not appartment style .
Excellent staff
Nice pool area

Buses run every 15 mins to Funchal from stop opposite hotel. Much more convenient than hotels which have long climbs to them . Short journey about 15 mins to centre. Weekly ticket for local bus e21 approx from Funchal bus station
Beautiful fishing village is about a 30 min walk or 10 min bus ride .
Shopping centre stores and food court ,bars restaurants 1 min walk

Would definitely use this hotel again

Stayed here First week in Feb. Travelled with Jet2 & paid a very reasonable price for the week on a bed & breakfast basis. Beforehand, I emailed the hotel about having a kettle in the room & was immediately replied to by Luis, who told me they would upgrade me to a room with a small kitchen. (Thank You Luis)
The hotel is starting to show it's age but it was clean, in good repair & everyone was friendly. The rooms are large & have a shower over the bath. There was A/C , a safe (extra charge) & a modern TV. We had nice views from the balcony of the pool area & the gardens.
The breakfast was basic & had a hot choice of bacon, eggs, beans etc.. as well as breads, fruit, yoghurts, meats, cheeses, cereals & porridge. Tea & coffee & fruit juice was self service. With such a choice, there is always something for everyone (although I am sure some people will find something to complain about.).
The bar was quiet but had music on a few nights. They have a happy hour between 18.30 & 19.30 where there is a range of drinks on sale at half price.
I found all the staff to be friendly & willing to help.
There is an outdoor pool area with a coffee shop /bar at the side of it - although this is a bit pricey. There is a very nice heated indoor pool, steam room & hot tub but while the covid restrictions apply, only the indoor pool. is open.
Jet2 list this as a 3 star hotel & this is a fair assessment. It is a clean friendly, value for money hotel with good facilities.

We booked a couple of days before our arrival and got a good deal on this Jet2 package holiday. We had decided to get the Covid test in Madeira and knew that this meant staying in our room for several hours until we got the result. All in all it took roughly 30 minutes to get our luggage, get tested and get on the transfer bus. The Madeiran airport is one of the most efficient I've ever been in. We even got bottles of water and bananas while we were waiting in the queue for our test.

We had booked a basic twin room but were upgraded to a suite with a kitchenette and a city view from the balcony. The room was lovely and spacious and we spent the evening sitting on the balcony admiring the sea view. We had brought plenty of food with us as we new we wouldn't be able to go out. However, when we spoke to the manager, Armando, the next day he said the staff would have gone to get us food from the supermarket if we had required it.

The breakfast buffet included sausages, eggs, cake, cereals and gluten free bread, which was a pleasant surprise as I don't expect to be catered for and usually bring my own bread. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel so I can't comment on that.

There is a beautiful, heated indoor pool at this hotel and towels are provided.

The hotel has a lovely bar which has happy hour from 18:30 to 19:30.

The hotel is a few minutes walk from the Forum shopping centre and many restaurants and bars. We ate in several of the local restaurants and the standard of food was excellent.

The hotel is a few minutes' walk from the bus stop into town. We walked into the centre of Funchal most days as it is only 4km from Ajuda area.

Funchal is a beautiful town with plenty going on even with the Covid situation. It's necessary to wear face masks on public places and indoors. The only problem we faced was when we went to the Pingo Doce Supermarkets, and the Cable Cars who wouldn't let us in as they said our face masks weren't of the correct standard, so we had to buy the paper medical ones that go over the ears, but nowhere else was bothered.

As we couldn't go into Pingo Doce for the Prego sandwiches, we found another place opposite the skate park next to the cable cars who have a small restaurant/canteen in their basement. They make everything fresh on the premises and, if you're looking for snacks this is the place to go. They also sell acceptable face masks for 45 cents each.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Jardins D'Ajuda to anyone and, when we return to Madeira we will be staying there again as it's one of the cleanest hotels we've ever stayed in.

This is our second visit to the Jardins d'Ajuda. We decided to return to the same hotel as we'd had such a good time there last year. We were allocated a lovely room looking onto the main street. I had written to the management prior to arrival to request a balcony on the main street as I love looking out at all of the beautiful Christmas decorations, and they had very kindly granted this request.

We were on a bed and breakfast option. This is one of the only hotels I've been to who cater for coeliac sufferers like myself, without you having to ask them in advance. They have gluten free cereals and cakes, and a good selection of plant based 'milks' such as oat and soya. They have yoghurt, sausages, toast, beans, salad and many other options to suit everyone. The options change daily. Must say a special thanks to Susanna Jardin (the breakfast chef), who was always so cheery and friendly to everyone. Nothing was too much trouble to her. The rest of the waiting staff are also really attentive and that's what makes this hotel such a nice place to visit.

Most days we used the indoor swimming pool, which is lovely.

Ajuda is a great area to stay in as there are many good restaurants and shops nearby the hotel including the Forum Shopping Centre. We ate most days in the Pingo Doce supermarket in the basement of the centre, which does really good value meals at a fraction of the cost of most restaurants as the food is priced per kilo. There are many good cafeterias and snack bars in the centre, which are also good value.

We like walking and walked the 3 kms into town and back most days, but you can get a bus pass if that's too far, and the buses are very frequent.

In the other direction from town there is a stoney beach called 'Praia Formosa'. It takes around 15 minutes to walk there from the hotel, and there are 3 nice bars along the front where you can sit and look out at the ocean. If you continue along the sea front you will arrive at the tiny fishing village of Camara de Lobos.

One of the things I love about Funchal is the abundance of public toilets, which are absolutely spotless. I think we will continue to visit Madeira around Christmas time as the Christmas light displays are fabulous and the atmosphere in the town is great. The Jardins d'Ajuda made Christmas Day very special with a beautiful breakfast and a drink of bubbly. Thanks, again, to Armando, the manager, and all the lovely staff from the cleaners and the reception who make this hotel such a great place to stay in.

The hotel is located outside the centre of Funchal with good bus links to the centre and other parts of the island. The hotel is clean and the rooms are rooms spacious, although dated and cleanliness and maintenance could be improved. The kitchenette is a little dated but fine for making drinks and snacks. The balcony overlooked the lovely garden- but they should clean it often because there were a lot of pigeon poop all over the table and chairs and it smelled and toxic. The carpets on all landings are stained by what looks like a bodged cleaning attempt. The price for cleaning your clothes is ridiculous, I wish they had laundry service for a large family when people stay over for weeks so we could do our own laundry. We had to go to the laundry service near the area to wash our clothes. The receptionists were totally disinterested and most of the employees really should not be in this industry as they are miserable staff and I experienced this kind of service in my life. They were cold, no smiles and I found it rude like you're bothering them. The air condition in the room was falsely advertised because the room was steamy like a the sauna 80-85c and no fresh air coming through. Their A/C system has not been working for years and for the price that we paid for the room it's not worth it. I didn't like the feeling when I took a shower and I got out of the bathtub, I was so sweaty and I was ready to jump back in the shower again, like( every single day). I never had this experience when I traveled to other countries in Europe. This is the first hotel that I stayed without air conditioning. The suite that we stayed in had one bedroom with a double door, but since there were four of us, so two of us slept in the small bed and the sofa bed. The small bed was not comfortable, like it had a hole in the middle and I could feel the spring of the mattress. The sofa bed is very thin and not comfortable but I talked to Armando at the Customer Service and they provided us with another cushion. The sofa bed is not for sleeping over two weeks long, your body starts hurting. Teresa the housemaid, she was extremely nice and she gave us enough towels for four people and she always changed our beds but the other maids didn't clean our room well and never got the right amount of towels or swept the floor and cleaned the bathtub. The breakfast is chaotic as there is always a massive, plenty of fresh fruit and cooked food and cold meats and cheese, lots of different bread and cereal to choose from, and the staff were always cleaning and restocking the food. The breakfast is always the same variety and bothering and people would get tired of eating the same food for two weeks, a few times, the bread was hard and stale and I wish they could make some omelets, french toast or pancakes, other danishes or cakes instead of serving the same type of food every day. If I visit Madeira again, I will look for another hotel.

First of all, there is absolutely no way this could be considered a 4 star hotel. 3, maybe, but definitely not 4. The rooms will make you feel like you went back in time to the 70s. The hotel is massive and horribly impersonal. There is no parking - just a contract with a nearby parking garage you have to pay for. Breakfast felt more like eating in a busy public market than in a relaxed setting.

The worst however was the service. With the exception of the porter who was nice and helpful, everyone else was just terrible. Check-in was supposed to be at 14:00 (as stated online and even stated on the room key) but it was actually at 15:00 so we had to wait around for an hour. The receptionists were totally disinterested. The pool boy disappeared for 20 minutes and a lot of us were waiting around for him to exchange towels. The cleaning ladies came in before we checked out and cleared our room so we had to get them to pick our towel cards from the trash as they were very expensive if not returned. The bag room was this cupboard where everyone could go in and out and take whatever bags they wanted and didn't feel safe at all.

All in all this was a rubbish experience and would definitely recommend avoiding this place.

Nice hotel, if a bit dated now.
Rooms varied in size.
Garden rooms overlooking pools & garden were smaller but had nice sized balconies.
Buffet breakfast had a good choice & also provided dairy free milk options but not for spreads for bread/toast.
There is an evening buffet which had a huge selection of food but we didn't eat in hotel in the evenings.
Cost was €19 each for evening buffet no drinks included which wasn't bad at all.
Indoor pool was nice temperature but the ladies changing rooms floors were a bit dirty due to users not taking off their shoes!
Staff really nice and helpful throughout the hotel.
I would recommend taking antihistamines/cream & spray as there is a huge influx of Mosquitos from Africa with day & night attacks.
I was bitten quite badly as forgot my sprays etc.
If you want a good location to go east or west from the beach then this is good.
Also a nice big shopping 'Forum Shopping Centre' 2 min walk away from hotel.
All buses stop 20 yards from hotel.
Watch out 'credit points' sellers!! Nooooo!!!! Just Timeshare in a different guise!

We thought our Trip with Jet2 was value for money & went B&B with a suite: Kitchen hob/sink/fridge/kettle with basics in the cupboards was OK for us as eating out near this hotel can be very cost effective.

Funchal central can be a bit more pricey.

We had a wonderful 6 weeks here, although the rooms are in brown furniture which makes it look quite dated it is of good quality. The rooms are well presented and if you are short of anything it is very quickly dealt with. The staff are all very friendly, a special mention has to go to ARMONDO i hope i have spelt his name right. He is a credit to the hotel , He is charming funny friendly and a most welcoming front of house. The breakfast is a vast display of food enough to fill the largest of belly s. The breakfast staff are war and welcoming and do a fantastic job. The main pool guy who has a look of a young Ormundo is the hardest working pool guy i have ever seen. He too has a good sense of humor and is very helpful. The cleaners are very good and change the sheets on a regular basis. The pools gardens are well kept i could not find anything to say much in a negative way about our stay ,we met some lovely people here and will remember our time here fondly.

Staying here now 7 to 21 August 2021. Awful place! Don't go here! Staff is very rude and Don't make you welcome. We were placed in the very noisy room (actually all front line of hotel is situated on the very noisy road) plus construction site was going on below us without any notice and after asking for days to change room for extra charge we were just ignored . Cleaning is quite bad as well. Restaurant manager is very rude and even dared to make unpleasant comments when didn't like our order making comments opposite of other guests. Generally very tired place very old fashioned. Staff have no idea what hospitality is. Please be careful before you book here.
