Detailed Reviews
We have been coming to Porto Mare for many years and the welcome is always warm and friendly. We book direct with the hotel and request a specific room which has always been honoured. The bedroom was well serviced and the maid looking after us remembered us from our last visit over last Christmas/New Year and actually was able to tell us which room we occupied, it is that sort of friendly place.
Food in the main restaurant is very much to our liking, a different theme each evening of well prepared and tasty dishes, service is good, the staff are well known to us and are very attentive. A wide range of food is available at both breakfast and dinner.
The hotel sits in beautifully maintained gardens, the outdoor and indoor swimming pools offer great opportunities for exercise and my wife had a couple of relaxing massages in the spa. The pool bar offers a good menu at lunchtimes.
The hotel is situated close to the Lido in what is the hotel district of Funchal. It is in a good position for able walkers making for the centre of town and beyond and there is a good bus service from outside the hotel for the less capable. Taxis are numerous and relatively cheap.
Entertainment in the evening is mixed, some better than others, there in one evening set aside for dancers which attracts many from outside who tend to take over the dance floor to the detriment of residents.
In all we find the hotel suits us well and the best we visit and we already have two further visits booked over the next 12 months.

Porto Mare and EdenMar are excellent hotels forming one complex. I've stayed here over many years and always been impressed by the facilities and, particularly, the staff. However, I want this review to focus on the Atlantida Restaurant.
The restaurant is not just another four star hotel buffet. It's far better than that. My wife and I make a point of eating here even when we're staying at other Portobay hotels on the island. The food at breakfast and dinner is a level above that served in many hotels both in quality and variety. There are regular weekly themed nights but it's never boring or totally predictable. The choice of all courses is extensive. It's staffed by well trained, experienced, liveried, personnel at all levels. Wines are served by the sommelier . Tables are dressed with white linen cloths and changed and relaid between each guest. The dress code is 'smart casual'. This is no college canteen!
The real point I want to make is that the restaurant, it's food and staff, are being disrespected by a small number of individuals who seem to think that it's OK to come into dinner each evening dressed in flip-flops, vests/T- shirts and shorts. No amount of finessing qualifies this type of dress as smart casual. It's just being scruffy and lazy. If you want to dress like this all the time there are other places that will accommodate you but you shouldn't be in Atlantida. Perhaps a 2 star hotel would be more suitable for you?

We had a room with wooden floor in the 5th. Stock (number 2516). Unfortunately, due to the inconvenient location of this room (although 5. Stock!) there the cooling unit of the downstairs bar Varanda so loud that it is really uncomfortable. In order for this to be switched off at night, we needed almost 2 vacation days of discussions. We had the impression that this problem is well known. No one from the hotel management has ever contacted us personally. For the bottle of wine we received as compensation through room service, we should have paid 6 € tax in the restaurant in the evening. Again discussions.... In addition, next to this room runs a supply channel of the AC or similar, which also emits noise all night, although our AC was switched off.
In itself it is a beautiful complex with lots of flowers and an old tree population. However, very old. The evening musical offer was definitely worth listening to: Singer with a great voice.
Drink bottles (wine or water) that are not drunk in the restaurant in the evening must be taken to the room and brought back the next day. The food on offer on the buffet is good, the quality rather satisfying. The staff in the restaurant is very striving, it is quickly removed and thus space is created on the table.
Many British guests, we were among the younger at 62!

The Hotel Porto Mare was a dream. We had a room (double room) on the top floor with a view of the pool, gardens and sea. The room's furnishings are certainly a little dated but in good condition. The amenities are hard to beat. Several different pillows, a comfortable bed with very wide beds. Sliding doors to the balcony that open on both sides and, what I was particularly pleased about, real blackout curtains. It was almost completely dark in broad daylight. Great class. The shower is in the bathtub (you have to be able to lift your legs over the edge of the tub!) but there is no shower curtain, just a retractable glass panel in the shower area. Great restaurant (Atlantida) with a varied breakfast buffet and a themed buffet in the evening with everything the culinary world has to offer. Transport links are very good because the bus stop is right outside the door. A trip to Funchal city center costs just under 2 euros per person and it takes less than 15 minutes. Absolutely recommend!!

The hotel is centrally located (2.5 km to Funchal Centro); the bus stop right outside the door; a seawater swimming pool one street away, a beautifully landscaped garden with many opportunities to sunbathe partly overlooking the sea. A large outdoor pool and a warm (28 degree) indoor pool. In addition wellness treatments possible. Breakfast and dinner at atlantida was very delicious and varied. The evening musical entertainment was very nice and always ended at 11 pm at the latest. The rooms are exceptionally large with a small sitting area. The bathroom was also large with bathtub incl. Shower. There were products from Rituals (shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, soap, body milk). A kettle and tea bag as well as coffee powder bags, sugar and canned milk were provided. A mini fridge could either be stocked by the hotel for a fee or used for own drinks. I can recommend this hotel 100% and had fantastic 6 days in funchal

We had a lovely holiday in Madeira and stayed at Porto Mare for 9 nights. The room was very clean and modern, with a fabulous view over the grounds, the huge outside pool and the sea. The hotel also has an indoor pool located in the spa area of the hotel, which leads outside - our 10 year old son loved this and spent much of his time in the pools, which were very well maintained, as well as the beautiful garden areas. The location is perfect as there are lots of lovely restaurants nearby if you aren't eating at the hotel. We had breakfast included, but after a few days, it gets very boring - the buffet food was ok, but we like to explore and eat out. We also thought the buffet food prices were very over-priced; even if you purchase a voucher for 3 nights, the discount isn't great. Drinks were also very over-priced - 4.50 euros for a coffee! However, the location is great for travelling into Funchal town and the 'old town' - only about 8 euros in a taxi. There was entertainment every night in the hotel, but it wasn't very lively.. we found a great pub up the road called 'The Hole in One' - reasonable prices, live entertainment every night and great cocktails!
Overall we had a lovely comfortable stay, and we would definitely return.

For me the best thing about this hotel are the Beautiful gardens and pool area and spacious suite. We had a good holiday but There were a few aspects that i feel could be improved on :
We stayed in the busy summer time and the pool was crowded at times with lots of children and balls and inflatables everywhere. The complex is a resort with 2 hotels and a time share accessing the facilities which is why it is busy. I was concerned that there were no lifeguards positioned by the pool on duty at busy times. The odd thing was that the childrens pool was not being used as it was cold. The pool area was not very clean with cigarette ends left on the tiles by sun loungers for several days.
The staff in the restaurants clearly worked exceptionally hard but appeared stressed and rarely looked very happy. They were efficient. The chef was very attentive at breakfast and the food at breakfast was very good. The orange juice at breakfast was not pleasant. The pool bar was often full and we often had to keep returning to see if there was a table available for lunch which was not very relaxing.
The best staff were the bedroom cleaners who were so discreet and left the room spotlessly clean. They always smiled and seemed genuinely proud of their hotel and the work they do. The reception staff were also very helpful.
We liked the tennis court but it was not very convenient having to walk down to the spa to collect the key and book. Would be so much better to be able to do this from reception which is near the tennis court.
The surrounding area has good restaurant options within strolling distance but there were not many restaurants with clear views of the sea, mostly by a road and overlooking buildings so does not have a great holiday vibe. Great access to Funchal.
On the day we left we had an evening flight and had to vacate our room at the set time and use the spa area to shower and change pre flight. Would have been nicer to have had a courtesy room to book a slot to get ready as we have experienced in other hotels.
Would we return ? I appreciate we have been honest and suggested some improvements. The hotel is very good and we would consider returning as it was good value and the gardens beautiful. However as the hotel is in a complex with the Eden Mar and the apartments it lacks the more personal touch that we enjoy.

Porto Mare was a great find for a stay in Funchal. Beautifully landscaped gardens & pools, directly overlooking the sea. Comfortable, spacious rooms looked after by a very efficient team of Ladies who literally whistle while they work. Many restaurants in the Hotel & the local area & ‘Happy Hour’ (actually an hour & a half) in the Portofino Bar is highly recommended, as is the Afternoon Tea. It’s a 20 minute, mainly flat pleasant walk into Funchal centre or an 8 minute bus ride on the No 2 services for €1.70 from right outside the hotel entrance. Highly recommended for a stay in Madeira.

This is a lovely hotel and grounds are beautiful but I have never stayed in a noisier hotel. There is constant noise of power tools, jet washers, leaf collectors, workmen changing the floors in nearby rooms, reversing vehicles etc which would really make me think twice about this hotel. Also cleaning station seems be to placed outside our room each day for rubbish collection so constant noise of bottles being thrown in by the cleaners. We are B&B as so many good restaurants nearby but have to say breakfast is basic for a hotel of this rating. No smoked salmon or any fish at breakfast just ham, salami, mortadella and turkey (?) Every day the same and just 4 types of cheese and very limited salad options to go with it, the only plain yoghurt available is in pots. Usual hot stuff but again just basics nothing a bit different and no variety. The pool bar serves nice snacks and staff are all very nice but so many hotels to choose from in Funchal and this wouldn’t be my favourite

We never had a fire drill. We were there Friday to Tuesday
Yes, there are many restaurants near to the hotel and in Funchal itself offering everything local cuisine to 2 Michelin stars. Have a look at Google maps for locations and reviews. Lots of restaurants are available to book via The Fork app which also has reviews.
It's a downhill walk into the centre of Funchal (steep coming back!) but frequent buses stop outside the hotel, taxis are cheap and readily available.
Sorry, can’t say but generally speaking I would think yes.
Shorts during the day Trousers for the evening in bar and restaurants.
Many bars close by show football. I think the sister hotel Eden Mar shows football. The PM is a 4 star+ hotel. There are plenty of other hotels where you can wear vest and shorts with flipflops if you like.
