Nestled in an elevated position, Quinta das Vistas Palace Gardens hotel is lauded for its spacious and comfortable rooms, despite some guests noting that certain aspects could benefit from updating. The tranquil atmosphere, complete with soft music and lush gardens, adds to the serene experience, although a few find it lacks vibrancy.
While the hillside location offers breathtaking views, it's considered somewhat isolated, suggesting that having a car might enhance your stay. The hotel's cleanliness and friendly staff receive consistent praise, contributing to its reputation for good value and charm.

This venue Quinta Funchal Gardens is a re-incarnation of Las Vistas Hotel.. Now owned by Barcelo Group it has retained its sense of Portuguese Quinta charm. I believe 70+ rooms Adults Only.
Atmosphere/Ambiance
Soft quiet relaxing streamed music throughout.
Lounge areas consisting of comfortable tradional armchairs/rugs/soft lighting.. a piano platform (no performances during our visit in January) The Hotel seemed to be under occupied..we only saw probably 20 different people during a ten day visit...a very quiet and peaceful time of year after the Christmas and New Year festivities which I understand attracted a full house.
Indoor and outdoor and Spa facilities fully functioning and delightful.
We reserved a "panoramic" view King bed room and the view from the 2nd floor balcony was truly panoramic with views over Funchal City up to Monte and down to the Atlantic.
Please note however this side of the Hotel does not benefit from sun hours on the balcony ..this is easily rectified by strolling around a semi circular perimeter overlooking Funchal/Harbour & Ocean with both pools situated facing all day sunshine East to West.
The Staff were all friendly helpful and efficient.
Location is up in the hills overlooking Funchal but if you are looking to pop out for a local shop for water/snacks etc it is in that sense a bit isolated because of the terrain.
Bus routes are around nearby but we opted for a simple taxi into Funchal for less than 20 euros return for convenience and enjoyed lunches in Funchal together with a cable car trip to Monte Palace gardens and the Old Town and Fort in Funchal.
All said..our overall experience of the Hotel and Holiday ( we stayed on a Half Board basis) and the food should be rated @ 9/10 .
If you want a quiet relaxing and scenically jawdropping holiday then it's worth a visit.

Dear Ms. Richardson, Thank you so much for such a detailed and thoughtful review. We are thrilled that you appreciated the unique charm of Quinta Funchal Gardens and its peaceful atmosphere. It is wonderful to hear that you enjoyed the panoramic views from your room and the tranquil ambiance of the hotel. We are also glad you found our spa facilities, lounge areas, and staff service delightful. We acknowledge the points raised, such as the lack of sun hours on certain balconies, and appreciate your suggestions. It is great to know you made the most of the sunny areas around the pools and the hotel grounds. Thank you for your glowing recommendation and for rating us so highly. We hope to welcome you back for another relaxing getaway soon. Kind regards, Cristina Pérez, General Manager

I just returned from a week staying here with a friend. We loved it. The first thing that springs to mind is the lovely staff; every single member we encountered was friendly, professional and extremely helpful.
The second thing is the location and the amazing views 😍, these would be very hard to beat especially as you get lovely views from the rooms, the dining terrace, the pools and the gym! The hotel is far enough out of town that it is quiet and peaceful, but close enough to walk (or economical for buses/bolt etc if you wanted)
The hotel still retains some of its historical grandness and the gardens definitely add to this. Everywhere is immaculately clean, and we really liked the fact that the pools and gym were accessible from early morning until well into the evening.
Our room and bathroom were really spacious, air conditioned with a huge TV (we didnt use), a small fridge, tea and coffee, iron and ironing board, hairdryer, yoga mat/block, spa towels ( in addition to normal towels), an easy to use safe and a wonderful garden terrace. The decor was a little dated but everything was pristine and the beds and bedding were supremely comfortable.
Finally the food and drink. What can I say. I am missing those amazing breakfasts (I can't imagine anybody not being satisfied with what was on offer) and the view and cheerful staff.
We had dinner twice in the restaurant and snacks and drinks in the bar twice too. Both menus offered a good selection of dishes, especially considering this is low season, and the food when it came was divine. ( The Lime ice cream was something else 🤤) We had wine by the glass and it was good quality , Coral beer which is the local very nice pilsner, we also had fresh Poncha from the bar, which was delicious 😁
I definitely recommend this hotel and we intend to return.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveler reviews.
The hotel is situated on a hillside above Funchal, with stunning views over Funchal and beyond. It is spacious, bright and welcoming and it is an adults only hotel. We enjoyed this aspect as there was a tranquility about the place. The room(a double), had all that you needed, it too was bright, spacious and airy. The bathroom was fine, but dated and some of the units have seen better days.I am sure now that they are part of the Barcelo Group this will be sorted in time. The facilities are good 3 pools, hot tub, spa gym.
We stayed B&B and the breakfast hot/cold buffet was great and catered well for the pan-european clientele, something for everyone plus a glass of champagne if you wanted one. In addition you could request cooked to order eggs, crepes and the like. They have a snack menu that operates throughout the day, it has a reasonable selection. We ate once in the main evening AS Vistas restaurant. The choices were good. This was the only glitch for me, my main course of pork tenderloin was anything but,it was edible (I did mention it to the waiter at the time). The staff at the hotel are fantastic, friendly helpful and attentive, always pleasant. The place is spotlessly clean. Given the steep hills, I would not recommend this for people with mobility issues unless you have a hire car. We normally walked down into Funchal and Taxi back( between 6-7€ from the Avendia de Arriaga taxi rank). In the future,it may be worth considering having a shuttle bus, to ferry people up and down, I have experienced this work well in other similar locations and each guest booked outward/inward times and they paid a small fee. Just a thought. All in all a delightful stay in a good hotel with a peaceful ambiance, great staff, plenty of breakfast choices and panoramic views down to the sea. Great.

Dear Lander, Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful review of your stay with us. We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the stunning views over Funchal, the peaceful adults-only atmosphere, and the spacious, bright room. It’s wonderful to know that the tranquility of our hotel contributed to a relaxing and pleasant experience. We appreciate your honest feedback regarding the bathroom and some of the furnishings. As you mentioned, now that we are part of the Barceló Group, we are already working on gradual updates to enhance the comfort and quality of our rooms. It's fantastic to hear that you enjoyed the breakfast buffet and the variety of options available, including the freshly cooked eggs and crepes and of course, the glass of champagne! Your comment regarding the pork tenderloin at AS Vistas restaurant has been noted, and we will make sure to address this with our culinary team to ensure consistency and quality in all our dishes. We’re especially pleased to know that our staff made such a positive impression. Your kind words about their friendliness and attentiveness are truly appreciated and will be shared with the team. All in all, we are delighted that you had such a positive experience and that you would recommend us. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back soon for another relaxing and memorable stay. Best regards, Hotel Management

-Garden bedrooms have a nice porch and small garden overlooking the views.
-Garden room is spacious, shower/bath, water/biscuit on arrival, kettle, safe etc
-Staff are helpful, very friendly and attentive
-Food was lovely and the breakfast was varied - catering for most nationalities
-18-20mins from airport
Cons -Hotel Location- up in the steep hills, taxis are needed as roads don’t tend to have pavements.
-The Pool and spa weren’t really used at all and not manned by staff (maybe because its winter). Pool is an inside/outside one, quite small but was too cold to use on the cooler days which was disappointing.
-‘Spa’ theres a small corridor with a door for changing rooms, treatment rooms, steam room and a locked sauna which apparently costs €30 to book/use them - quite ridiculous when most hotels don’t charge for facilities and for 5 star i’d expect it to be included.
-Had ants in my room most days
-Small gym room with weights and about five pieces of equipment - most don’t work/rusty
-Fyi Have to unplug a lamp to get bedside charging as plugs are across the room
I know its during the festive period but christmas songs on 24/7 loop throughout the hotel was too much for me for a week.
The hotel is not 5 star as bedrooms and gym are in need of a serious upgrade.
Whilst it has lovely gardens and great views, the dated rooms need some care and attention to put back the details and high standards that 5 star hotels have.

Dear Guest, We really appreciate the time you took to share your experience with us. We are sorry to hear that some aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations. We take this opportunity to inform you that we had a problem with the heat probe of our pool and considering that we are now in festive seasons, the waiting time for this problem to be resolved increases. Our outdoor pool is intended to offer relaxation and leisure, and we regret that it did not meet your expectations on this occasion. On other hand, we are delighted that you enjoyed the panoramic views and the private garden attached to your room. It is great that our staff's helpful and attentive service contributed positively to your experience, and that you loved the variety and quality of our food offerings, especially the breakfast. We thank you very much once again for your time and we hope to have the pleasure of welcome you back at our hotel. With our kind regards, Laura Caldeira - Guest Experience Manager

Location is horrendous, due to no footpaths either side of the road, so consequently dicing with death to walk into town as buses & cars use this road like a race track. Also opposite the hotel entrance is a private house with several dogs which hang over the fence barking at you, whilst you're trying to cross the road! Although the distance into town for us to walk is not a problem, to get there safely you are better taking bus or taxi, but if using bus, bus stops are still 50M up the road so still a risk of being hit by a speeding vehicle. As for the decor of the hotel, I could accept dated, but not the fact that the carpets in our room & landing areas were worn, stained & threadbare. Also there were buckets around the hotel catching water from leaks in the ceiling. No way is this hotel a 5 star & we will certainly not be returning.

Dear Carol, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at our hotel. Nice and spacious hotel. Nice spacious room and lovely bed. Breakfast was also good. Note that you still pay extra €10 per day for parking a car, but because of location halfway up a hill / mountain a car is highly recommended.

We left feeling truly relaxed after a special week at this hotel. After sleeping soundly in our really quiet and comfortable room, we enjoyed a fabulous breakfast every morning on the terrace, with views down towards Funchal and the ocean. The terrace is also perfect for an evening glass of wine after a day exploring Funchal or simply enjoying the beautiful hotel gardens and swimming pools. The staff are very friendly, and we look forward to coming back to see them again!

Had pleasant stay, beds clean and comfortable, housekeeping excellent. Breakfast good variety of food, staff excellent, just do not leave food outside unattended otherwise pigeons will nibble. Reception staff helpful on arrival, no reps in hotel, just a folder when asked for. Not much atmosphere in uncomfortable seating area, either day or night. Small pool, bars not regularly attended. Hotel on Hillside, but regular bus service into Funchal. Good WiFi.

The setting of this hotel and the views are incredible- from rooms and all the terraces. To have the wonderful breakfast outside looking at a complete panorama of Funchal Bay is unforgettable and these outstanding elements almost made us forget the few improvements (carpets need replacing) that Barcelo still need to make ... it's a work in progress... when they reach the end and it is perfect, rooms will probably be much more expensive. Staff are outstanding- Liliana who was so patient helping us find the best room for my disability that would also be perfect for our 20th anniversary. She also organised a treat for us on the day. There was a welcome card from Laura the Guest Experience Manager with Madeiran specialities on arrival & complimentary bottle of water each day. Staff in the restaurant- Newman, Helland and Alexandra are attentive, professional but so personal & friendly. Loved the casual cream clothing... Rooms are spacious- bed and mattress the most comfortable ever with high quality sheets and pillows. Balcony lovely, view exceptional. We had a very stained carpet- needs replacing but probably on the management's list of tweaks. Pool is amazing for people with mobility issues- ramps in both indoirs and out. Pool temperature far too cold both in and out. Views from it spectacularand gardens surrounding all incredible just needs to be warmer. Very modern changing rooms work well for after checkout. A superb stay- very chilled and quiet- we can't thank you enough. Please make pool warmer that was the only thing that we were bothered about.

Looked forward to visiting after seeing pictures of views and reading reviews of reopened hotel. Views from terrace were lovely . Staff were all very efficient, friendly and polite. Have to say that staff are a real asset to hotel . Reception was lovely ,rooms a bit tired and dated and would question panoramic view? Spa was out of action. Food: Breakfast was very good with plenty choice and items restocked quickly. Staff gin very efficient. Dinner would question quality, beef overcooked , pork dry and we were not only guests to notice this. The Quinta is up a hill , as are a lot of places in Madeira, but you do get a good view from terrace. The road directly down from hotel was narrow and no pavement so felt a little vulnerable at times . Reception gave an alternative route which did have pavement but added on to walk.
