Very good location, however it is up a steep hill although Funchal is quite hilly in places. Staff are lovely. Hotel has an unique charm and personality. Only bad thing was the wifi because we were relying on it to plan our daily activities- we couldn't connect to it from our room and was very slow even downstairs.

Went to Hotel Monte Carlo 11 September 2016. Immediately disappointed with first room shown, dark, dingy, musty and on a "wing" at the back. Moved to no. 3 inside the main hotel. Stained carpet, bed made out of hardboard on wooden legs, with a crinkly old torn mattress and two well used pillows, no way of locking door from inside,... More

Located half way up a steep incline should not put you off. Plenty of taxis available locally fairly priced. As for the hotel - splendid. Location bonus is the stunning views over the city and harbour. Buffet breakfast and every morning fresh bread, cheeses, meats, and fruits available. Very good bar service with the night time cocktails well worth the... More

This hotel has surprised me in a positive way. I only stayed for 1 night but it was enough time to enjoy the roof pool with marvelous views and the old spectacular building. The furniture was a bit old and breakfast could improve but I guess for the price to can't compare

This hotel is great value for money. It is located in the pricey Funchal for a fair price. The hotel staff are very friendly and the interior and exterior have plenty of charm! The views are great but the walk from town is steep so bear in mind. Lots of traditional charm! Would go again!

My friend and I stayed here for the last week as we were attending a friends wedding on the island. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, there was always plenty to eat at breakfast and the room was clean and spacious. The only thing I have to complain about was minor, the shower took forever to heat up and it wasn't very... We booked to stay here on a budget and I have to say we were pleasantly surprised. The hotel is situated about 10 minutes walk from the sea front and has amazing views across Funchal. The hotel is probably in need of some modernisation but we found it perfectly adequate for what we needed. The staff were always very helpful.... More

A lovely old hotel up on the hill. A 15 minute walk down to the old town but best to take a taxi back. Staff seem to be unfriendly when you arrive but let me assure you that is not the case. Their English is not the best, hence you think they are not interested in helping you. The bar... More

We stayed here in 2012, and we stayed 5 nights. Amazing views...well, in fact this is the best hotel in town to have such a view over the all Funchal area...the views of the harbor, the views of the gardens...you will see everything from here!!!! This is the highest point of Funchal. One of the very few Old Buildings of... More

We were looking for a hotel with character, history, good location in the old town and within our budget. Monte Carlo met these criteria. Situated on a steep hill overlooking the harbor, the views from the terrace, pool area and our room's window were fabulous even in hazy weather. The gorgeous views come with a price however: a very steep... More
