Built within the grounds of an historic "Quinta" of Funchal, Quintinha de Sao Joao resurrects perfectly the magic of the old Madeiran residences. There are 42 spacious rooms in total, all equipped with the most up-to-date facilities with splendid views over the gardens. Bar, restaurant, heated outdoor and indoor swimming pools and full Spa are included facilities. The careful attention to detail and the excellent personal service brings to life our motto "Home from Home."

Quintinha São João hotel garners consistent commendation for its spotless environment, with guests frequently lauding the pristine rooms and common areas. The tranquil and opulent atmosphere, complete with lush gardens and elegant furnishings, contributes to the serene experience many have highlighted. Guests are often impressed by the array of amenities, including a luxurious spa and diverse dining options. While the hotel's location is praised for its proximity to central Funchal, the journey involving an uphill walk near a busy road warrants mention.
Service at the hotel is regularly described as outstanding, with staff members earning accolades for their friendliness and professionalism. The spacious, well-appointed rooms are a hit among travelers, though a few note the beds' firmness and some signs of wear. Despite these minor critiques, the hotel is seen as offering reasonable value, with the caveat of some extra costs.

Another tranquil break at this amazing Hotel
My wife and I have just returned from a 2 week break at this lovely hotel for the third time.
We were given a lovely welcome from Caterina and Maura on reception, before being taken to our room by Caterina who helped to carry our luggage.
As always, all rooms and all areas of the hotel are kept spotless by the excellent cleaning staff. The reception staff are very helpful, including the 2 girls mentioned above, together with Pedro and Zara.
The food in the restaurant is always excellent, served by friendly, pleasant and professional staff. Felipe, Mathias, Eduardo, Alexander, Athena and Rada, who all go out of their way to ensure that you have a lovely dining experience. The ambience in the restaurant is so relaxing and tables etc are dressed with beautiful linen and cutlery which enhances the fine dining experience.
My wife says that the thing that keeps her going when out her morning runs (whilst running up the last hill to the hotel! ) is the thought of the excellent breakfast. The restaurant has recently started a new initiative on Friday nights whereby, the chefs prepare the food in front of you. This is really appreciated as it gives you a chance to thank the chefs who work behind the scenes making delicious food.
Special mention also to Rosie in Customer services who is so helpful and goes out of her way find challenging walks etc and activities to do, even printing off bus timetables. She really is so enthusiastic and spends a lot of time researching things for us.
The bar staff are also very pleasant. Sitting next to the area outside the bar in the afternoon is so relaxing and has a tranquil atmosphere, where you can sit and enjoy a drink and a snack if you feel peckish, in a beautiful garden setting.
The hotel was celebrating their 25th Anniversary this year and they offered us an orchid to plant in the garden which was a lovely touch, as we were also celebrating our Wedding Anniversary.
We have already booked to return in January and are counting the days until then.
Thanks very much once again for such an enjoyable stay. The staff are a credit to the hotel owner, Andreas.
We thoroughly recommend the Quintinha São Joao hotel and suggest eating in the restaurant as you are unlikely to find food anywhere which is as delicious and such a wide choice as in this hotel.

This is a small boutique hotel set in a residential area away from the town centre. It is generally quiet apart from dogs barking in nearby houses. The real star attraction is the staff who are all friendly and helpful and who put some real effort into making our stay as pleasant as possible.
We had a room with a balcony on the second floor. It was very spacious and well appointed with effectively a three-piece suite and coffee table as well as a writing desk, dressing table and fridge. We had a large bathroom with a shower over the bath as well as a separate shower in a cubicle. The bed may be considered firm by some but we slept well.
Breakfast was the usual buffet affair with plenty of choice. Hot items were cooked to order and were nice although sometimes not quite what we ordered.
Dinner was a bit of a mixed bag. On occasion it was a triumph of style over substance. Carbs or vegetables were often non existent. The Goan specialities were trumpeted on the menu but I found them lacking real depth of flavour. One of my fellow guests hailed from that part of the world and he made a similar assessment. The New Year gala dinner was tasty and looked very pretty but after seven or eight courses I heard several complaints that people were still hungry.
Sandwiches and light meals are served in the bar until 6pm. They were pretty good and reasonably priced.
The location is fairly convenient. The walk into town is 15 minutes or so down a reasonably steep hill. It is a more pleasant walk if you take the slightly longer route down the road the ends at the Casino and then wander through the park. At the end of a long day of sightseeing the hike up the hill is a little daunting but a taxi is 5 to 10 euros depending on where in the town you take it from. The quickest/cheapest ride is from the rank opposite The Ritz Cafe / Theatre. The hotel offers a twice daily shuttle Monday to Friday but you must book a seat.
In terms of entertainment there is some low-key piano playing in the bar two or three nights a week which is pleasant bit not terribly engaging.
In summary this a comfortable place to stay and certainly offers a restful experience.

We've just had two great weeks at the hotel Quintinha Sao Joao, perched uphill from Funchal, capital of the Atlantic island of Madeira. This was our fifth visit and we were nervous about holidaying during the pandemic, even though Madeira is a destination from which quarantine is not required on return home. The hotel proactively advised us about the measures needed to have a healthy, Covid-free holiday: Madeira insists, as part of its strategy against the virus, on visitors bringing proof of a recent (72 hours) negative Covid test, or taking one at the airport then waiting in the hotel room for the results.
The QSJ staff team has done brilliantly in making adjustments within the hotel, to make life as safe as possible for all, without its measures being intrusive. Much thought has gone into sanitisation, masking, social distancing etc arrangements in place in all public areas, and the staff has embraced all the Covid rules and worked together efficiently and professionally to ensure the delivery of its trademark excellent experience for QSJ's guests.
It's sad people have stayed away from the island, not understanding what a great holiday destination it is amid the pandemic, and we felt safer from the virus in Madeira than at home. Despite the current problems, Madeirans remain cheerful and welcoming and there was nothing we did in our previous visits that we couldn't do now: there is no better or safer destination than Madeira, and the incomparable QSJ - try it and see!

This is a family owned, 32 room, five star hotel. A delight to the eyes, contemporary architecture at its very finest. The interior is impeccably maintained, the common parts are light and spacious and feature many attractive sitting areas, all furnished with antiques and fine old furniture. The atmosphere is immediately 'homely'
The check in procedure is efficient and instantly welcoming. Staff throughout the hotel are very helpful and very kind.
There is a pleasant and spacious bar, and an exceptionally fine dining restaurant offering an excellent menu with an interesting choice of Portuguese, European, and Goan dishes. The waiting staff, carefully overseen by restaurant manager, Felipe, are all from the very top drawer. Breakfast is also a delight, with excellent a la carte and buffet to choose from, there's even sparkling wine, to which you are quite free to help yourself. Add indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, a gym, a games room, and you have a complete luxury package. Guest rooms are large and elegantly furnished, and the hotel's location, a twenty minute walk downhill to Funchal's chic stores is perfect.

Our fifth visit to the Quintinha and happily we found it as we left it - an oasis of calm and understated elegance, with a superb restaurant. The rooms are large and comfortable, and we enjoyed the views of the garden and the surrounding hills from our balcony. We took advantage of the discounted "happy hour" in the bar before meals, and also the delicious fresh scones and tea some afternons (the breakfasts are so good that we often skipped lunch!).
The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff make this hotel stand out from the pack, and we enjoyed meeting some old friends and making new ones on the staff at the reception, the bar and in the restaurant. We further explored the island using the extensive local bus network, but some days just chilled around the hotel and in Funchal. The views from the walk along the coast past the Lido and towards Camara de Lobos are spectacular. Highly recommended - we hope to return.

We spent a week in Madeira, choosing the Sao Joao based on its location and positive reviews, and we were not disappointed.
Highlights:
Staff were so welcoming and helpful! On arrival we were given a brief tour of the hotel before being taken to our room. They gave us helpful advice about places we planned to visit and helped us to arrange car hire (when it seemed to us that all the car hire companies on the island were either sold out or charging a fortune).
Our room ('Jasmim' junior suite) was huge and comfortably furnished, with a lounge area, balcony and fridge. We were on the shady side of the hotel, which was perfect as it kept our room cool.
Breakfasts were fantastic! Each morning we enjoyed the buffet breakfast with fresh fruits, breads, cheeses, meats, cereals, etc. and then ordered from the menu giving a choice of waffles, pancakes, eggs, etc. I had something different every day and it was always delicious. I recommend the pancakes with wild berry ice cream and honey. Also the breakfast area looks out on a little garden area, so relaxing.
The outdoor pool area is lovely, with a large number of loungers on the grass around the pool and then the pool bar next to it.
The spa is great, we each enjoyed a 1hr full body massage and it was the best massage I've had in ages!
The location is in a quiet part of Funchal and only a 10 minute walk to the busier centre. There is a main road close to the hotel which we didn't notice any noise from and it was very convenient for driving out of Funchal without having to negotiate the city centre.
Downsides:
The indoor pool area is a little tired but we still enjoyed using it and it was generally just the two of us in it so it was almost like having a private pool. On a cloudy or windy day it's a great option to have.
There is construction work going on at the Four Views hotel next door, which does lessen the relaxing atmosphere of the outdoor pool a little but we just set ourselves up on the side of the pool that looks away from the Four Views and it didn't bother us at all then. The noise was fairly low level so it was easy to forget about it and we couldn't hear it at all when we were indoors.
The hotel is on a hill, like much of Funchal. We had no problems with this and found the pathways into the centre safe and easy to navigate but if you have any mobility issues it might be a factor to consider. The bus connections are very good though so you really don't have to walk if you don't want to.
All in all, the highlights hugely outweighed the downsides and we had a wonderful time at this hotel. I'm glad we stayed here and I would stay again.

Quintinha Sao Joao is conveniently located a bit uphill from central Funchal but with the city center still in walking distance. As mentioned by fellow travellers, the main road V1 out of the city center is very near but if you have a room to the other side (nordwards), it's not really a disturbance. The historic building is very nice and in a lovely garden. It's thoughtfully decorated with lots of antiques and some of the communal spaces like the lobby or bar remend you more at a museum rather than a hotel. Rooms are spacious and come either without or for a small surcharge with balcony including a nice city view (from most of the rooms). The hotel opened in 1998 and is more or less unchanged since then with just soft renovations, so will be time for a more profound renovation especially of the rooms in a couple years. But if you are a fan of antiques you will certainly appreciate the overall ambiente and style. Very comfortable bed with egyptian cotton linen.
Outstandingly friendly and helpful personnel - especially at the reception and in the restaurant - you really make a difference!
Excellent restaurant which is especially great for dinner. Half board is of excellent value. I've eaten there on both nights of my stay and was always highly satisfied. If you like a classic restaurant with classic style and service, you will be a fan of it. There are in times of cost optimized travel and hotels not that many other places like this (especially since Hotel Hessischer Hof in Frankfurt went into bankruptcy due to the Covid situation).
Many thanks - I really enjoyed my stay and will be very happy to return!
Outstandingly friendly and helpful personnel - especially at the reception and in the restaurant - you really make a difference!
Excellent restaurant which is especially great for dinner. Half board is of excellent value. I've eaten there on both nights of my stay and was always highly satisfied. We stayed here for 7 nights. The hotel maintains the 5* quality and services, yet the rooms still feel very homely; something which is very rare. The location of the hotel isn’t too far from the city centre and there are many routes which can be taken. The staff were extremely helpful; Rosie, the concierge, helped us book various excursions and suggested many different activities.
However, one member of staff in particular stood out amongst the rest - Bernardo, who waited our table many-a-time, was friendly, chatty and felt like a good friend. He was very welcoming and professional. For one of the mornings we had to get up at 6 am for the ferry to Porto Santo; Bernardo made sure that the kitchen staff were up early to make us our desired choice for breakfast (which was also always of a high quality and tasted great).
We highly recommend a stay at this hotel, as it offers the homeliness and relaxed atmosphere when you need to wind down after a busy day of exploring!

+1
Quintinha São João is a family run charming and classical hotel in Funchal.
The rooms are surprisingly big, bedding is extremely comfortable. Balconies are surrounded by the tropical garden of the property. We did not use the outside pool nor the spa, but both looked very relaxing. Kids enjoyed the rooftop panoramic indoor pool and the games room. Gym was well equipped.
Breakfast is full of local fresh products and there is a wide choice of à la carte eggs, pancakes and waffles. Ingredients were very good. Try the tropical fresh juice!
We had dinner at the hotel restaurant, “A Morgadinha”. Definitely a hidden treasure with food from Goa, India (the founder of the hotel has as Indian ascendancy) but also local food. Extremely tasty, wonderful fish, excellent Portuguese mainland wines. Service is spotless.
Staff is outstanding both at the restaurant, bar, cleaning and front desk. All very helpful and attentive. They helped us several times with programming our activities on the ground.
Regarding covid: we felt quite safe.
Don’t miss the flowers of Madeira. The garden and the common areas of the hotel are tastefully decorated with exquisite local flowers.
“Quintinha” provides a true local experience, full of lovely details and an extremely comfortable stay.
Hope to be back soon!
Advices:
1. Rent a car: Quintinha is in Funchal, 10/15 minutes easy walk from the major attractions. But you will need a car to move around Funchal and the whole island.
2. bring some repellent (Previpic Tropics spray works well) :-).

Dear RPG1977, What a lovely ending to the year! Thank you so much for sharing this cheerful and motivating review on TripAdvisor! You have been very thorough and it is great to see that you have enjoyed our facilities, gastronomy and "outstanding" staff. Your comments are much appreciated and I shall take great delight in sharing them with the rest of the team. It is interesting how you have singled out that the "Quintinha" provide a true local experience.... Above all, we wish to provide our customers with the true Madeiran hospitality and we are delighted that we have succeeded were you are concerned. We hope we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back soon. Kind regards Yours sincerely André Barreto General Manage

On our 2 visits (not NYE) evening meals are always served to table by excellent waiting staff.
Breakfast is a bit of both!
Dress code is at least smart casual very surprised if they insisted on much more than that on NYE
