Hotel do Carmo is 3 stars hotel right in Funchal's city center, with an ideal position to discover the city's main points of interest. There are supermarkets, pharmacies, banks and shops nearby. This hotel is a very good example of late nineteen sixties interior design, which confers it an identity and style of its own. It has 80 bedrooms all equipped with a 32'LCD television with cable TV, free wifi, direct telephone and a private bathroom. They are uniquely decorated with photo panels with icons of the sixties. All of its furniture and decorations are also clearly identified with this period. Most of them (49) have a balcony. Hotel do Carmo has a Restaurant were breakfast and other meals are served. The Bar on the reception floor has a nice terrace and a television where clients can watch Sports TV channels and play Billiards. On the last floor there's an outdoor swimming pool with a wonderful view over the bay and the surrounding mountains. Free Wifi is provided is all areas of the hotel

Our first visit was back in the 1980’s well before all the new roads, viaducts and tunnels (and the cable car up to Monte!). Our latest two visits confirm the fact that the do Carmo is simply a lovely hotel in an excellent location! Location is important and the do Carmo is uniquely positioned in Madeira Town rather than on the mega hotel strip out to the West. If you want the English / Irish pub, McDonald’s, time-share hustlers etc then go for the mega tourist hotel strip. If you want to enjoy the charm of the old town, local restaurants and shops then the do Carmo is the one to choose! Only criticism I would have is the lack of coffee making facilities in the rooms and the absence of aircon (unnecessary during our November visit (it was almost chilly!)) otherwise a nice not too expensive place to stay and enjoy old town Funchal. And if the weather does get a bit warm, it’s a short walk to the cable car which quickly whisks you away up to the cooler climes of Monte and from there to the Botanical Gardens and the excellent Levada walks. Already looking forward to our next visit!

Loved my stay here, yes things slightly different & quieter than normal due to COVID! Felt safe but relaxed. Excellent central location, just a short walk from lots of great inexpensive restaurants. Staff were fab, especially Marcello & Tania, could not fault them really. Fabulous hot breakfast, lots of choice. Rooftop pool great with stunning views. Quirky balcony room onto street but everything you needed (except a fridge). Comfy bed & Powerful shower too! Would def stay here again. Great holiday! Thank you! 😍

The location was great, on a quiet side street in the heart of town, walking distance to all the restaurants, with parking facilities available just outside the hotel for 6 Euros a day. Our room had a nice balcony overlooking Funchal and its hills, comfy bed, power shower, couldn't fault it. We stayed for 7 nights and what made it special for us was the team. Everyone we dealt with (from reception, housekeeping to the breakfast ladies) were just super friendly and genuinely nice! Special thanks to Marcelo and Tania who did a superb job at making us feel welcome and at home, super informative, nothing was too much trouble and we really appreciated all your efforts during our stay, thank you so much!

On arrival as per Covid Guidelines we had to isolate in our hotel room. So arriving at the hotel to find just one member of staff on was not quite what we expected. Our room was tiny, as the hotel appeared empty we asked to change rooms. It took reception over an hour to inform us they could put us in a family room but not that night and it would be 20€ more per night. So our room, well it’s a sixties hotel maintaining much of 1960’s character, original tired furniture, wardrobe, bathroom and shelf with a drawer for a dressing table, just one plug underneath but mirror at other side of room. Just enough room to walk around the bed, don’t pay extra for a balcony as it is on a noisy street with a permanent screen covering 50% of it. The rooms are not air conditioned but you do get a noisy fan. As we had to Isolate (Oct 2020) and we arrived late we phoned for room service; we were asked to go to reception (mmmmm isolating?) Here we were presented with a Pizza takeaway menu, cheese is not the best when you are lactose intolerant. We ordered a Calzone and the only member of staff opened the bar for us and put some lights on whilst we waited for our pizza. When the pizza arrived. calzone’s are flat with ham and cheese on in Maderia, he opened up the terrace garden and for us to eat outside. Breakfast was basic the first day and cold the second morning. By this time we were checking flights to come home five days early, we had booked through Jet2 holidays, our previous holiday had been cancelled and Jet 2 recommended this as a better choice from our original at a bargain of £100 extra instead of £200 extra. For our £1100 B & B holiday for 2 we encountered; a hotel up a hill, away from the old town amenities, vagrants on the street, on a night time scooter track on the road below our balcony. With the added accompaniment of an electric metal shutter door and fire door going all night for the residential apartments opposite. Plus the sound of a balcony bar from a hostel, here they were singing, banging bottles on the table till 4am. When I complained to reception next morning I was told; “I should have phoned reception during the night as the USUALLY send for the Police when it gets noisy”, now what does that tell you? Throughout our 2/7 night stay there was only ever one member of staff on duty doing everything. Everything was shut up. Rooftop pool no parasols, we were informed the manager was “off for a few days” and so was the Jet2 rep. Phoning Jet2 in Leeds got response; my choice tough luck! Seeing how upset I was the one polite hardworking member of staff contacted Jet2 for me on the phone. After much persuasion, I believe spurned on by my video recoding skills we were offered another hotel free of charge where we were far happier. This is not a hotel for a relaxing holiday, it’s basic, noisy and very dated.

We are very sorry that we didn't meet your expectations. Unfortunately, there is a strong impact on hotel services and in the city in general, due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, which is something we can’t control. We all have experienced unprecedented challenges to our operation and our life in general. Anyway, we apologize for any inconvenience and we hope you can come back on a better time.

Having braved the landing at Funchal Airport we were soon delivered to the Hotel Do Carmo, admittedly this was during the COVID 19 period so face masks, COVID testing at airport all ok. Being late arrivals, restaurant only does breakfast, decided on room service, there was only one employee on duty, the receptionist who gave us a menu for the local Pizza place. Then had to open the bar so we could have a drink. The room was very small and cramped but the bed was fine, a lot of city noise made it hard to sleep, no air conditioning but a noise ceiling fan. Breakfast was ok but haphazard. The next night following an arranged afternoon with friends we decided to wander out, there was nothing, no restaurants, bars etc, we walked down dark creepy alleyways for about a mile before we found anything open, our trip back got worse, passing beggars and gangs of drunks making it feel dangerous, then the noise started, racing mopeds with loud exhausts, a backpackers hostel opposite hotel with a roof terrace where drinking was still going on loudly at 4:30am, an apartment block with a metal shutter to garage opening and closing every few minutes made sleep impossible. Breakfast was a joke cold eggs, cold everything. On a plus Jet2 holidays moved us to a normal tourist hotel that day. Hotel Do Carmo is NOT for tourists or holidaymakers, it’s in the city but away from night life. Understaffed and in need of upgrades. The area is dark and crowded with unsavoury street life. Not recommended.

We are very surprised with your comments, as it seems that you didn't get the correct information about Hotel do Carmo. Hotel do Carmo is working for more than 50 years with a lot of happy tourists from over the world. At the moment, we are living very difficult times and we had to adapt our service to be able to reopen the hotel. We have the restaurant closed and the bar is working with limited service. This information was passed to all our partners and is also published in our website. Probably you didn't see this information, before you choose our hotel for your holidays. Funchal is a very nice city with a lot of bars and restaurants in walking distance from the Hotel do Carmo, and our guests specially apreciate the central location. Due to the Pandemic, unfortunatelly, a lot of them are closed, as what happens in most of the cities in the world. We are vey sorry that this was not a hotel for you, but we were happy to provide you a different option with no extra costs.
