Lovely, clean, quiet, comfortable hotel. Covid sanitisation, cleansing regimes and protection were immense both in the hotel and bars, restaurants and other venues we visited in the local area. Staff at the hotel were incredibly helpful and made you feel comfortable and very welcome. Rooms were very clean and a good size offering plenty of room.(junior suite). Air conditioning was brilliant and free WiFi was hassle free throughout our 10 day stay. Gardens are beautiful and very well maintained daily. Great location for the sea front, bars and restaurants.. buses ran very frequently to the city and cost under 2 euros each way. Breakfast was excellent, served between 7 a.m - 10 a.m daily and offered a wide range of fresh hot and cold foods to suit everyone’s palate. We only booked for breakfast during our stay although we saw food on offer during the day, evening for all inclusive customers that looked excellent quality too. It was our first time to Maderia we would definitely return and would definitely book at Girassol again. If you suffer with Mosquito bites take some creams/sprays with you. My husband has an allergic reaction to their bites and received roughly a dozen in the 10 days. Not too bad at all comparing it to other holidays. Trip to the local pharmacy to get a tube of cream was 12 Euros. Cream helped a little but found cold towel wraps were much better.

Wow wow wow - what a great facility to relax away the morning or afternoon. The spa therapist Emma is amazing. This is a must do experience for anyone visiting the hotel. Relax at the jacuzzi area, refresh in the sauna, steam room and turkish bath and have a massage experience with Emma that leaves you feeling like a new person!!!

First of all, this hotel is absolutely not a 4 star hotel, I would rate it a very good 3 star. The photos make it look a lot better than it is. Staff The staff on the reception were excellent, they were very helpful and printed all our documents out with no charge. Most of the bar staff were really good, some were so much nicer than others but none of them were rude. Waiting staff didn’t say a word to you, we would thank them for clearing out plates and it was like we were invisible. Rooms The rooms themselves were clean on arrival, and cleaned every single day by the cleaners. Very spacious, Plenty of storage, would advise using the drawers in the living room ad they’re a lot bigger than you think, Our view was fine overlooking the pool with a bit of a sea view. Air con in the living area and fab in the bedroom we just slept with the door open. Facilities I’m not sure where other people who have reviewed went all inclusive, but I didn’t find the food to be any better than anywhere else I’d been before. BBQ night was very good, snacks were great, however during the day time we ordered from the bar rather than off the buffet and tended to eat out every night. When getting food from the buffet you had to use what we can only describe as petrol station gloves, the slippiest gloves ever and pointless would be easier to sanitise beforehand. Drinks were just local drinks, they were okay, nothing special but you can pay more to upgrade to branded alcohol and cider. The spa was amazing, I think the lady said her name was emma, she was worth every single penny, I would highly recommend. Pool area pretty filthy tbh, the pool itself was hoovered out but the tiles looked grotty. we always got a sunbed but then we’re always up at 6:30. They had towels for you to use too which was great. Toilets around the pool are based in the spa and very clean. On an evening only the upstairs bar was open, the bar with the piano wasn’t opened once so it was a bit disappointing really. No music played in the bar or around the pool. The second pool is hidden up the stairs so do look for it, however is a bit more windier up there. Local area Plenty to do nearby, Funchal centre is quite a walk away but the hotel itself is in a good place if you want to go into Funchal or on to the next village. Shopping centre in the next village was brilliant, Funchal centre was gorgeous and would recommend eating at the local restaurants. Food and alcohol relatively cheap. We went on a catamaran to see the dolphins and jet skiing. Water is extremely choppy, therefore would advise a sea sick tablet if your choosing to do this. We went with jet2 and the whole team we had contact with were fantastic. Personally we would return in future, it is an island for the older generation however I think with it being on the green list it has attracted more of the younger generation. We would probably stay a little more towards Funchal old town as a couple, however if you don’t mind a walk/bus ride the 1.2 and 4 are the buses to get or approx 10 euro in a taxi. Masks to be worn inside and when at the pool bar itself. No mask needed if your walking around outside. The final comment I would make is that there are some budges in a cage up on the top and also a lot of cats about near the bar. Some of the guests loved this and would feed the cats. However, we did not enjoy this personally.

Payed for a superior room with a sea view. Partial sea view room and overlooking a busy main road. Very disappointed. Having just arrived it’s not a great start. On the plus side the room is clean and spacious and looks like the decor is very new.
