Our 2nd stay at the Porto Santa Maria and it again fully met our expectations, despite the obvious difficulties of Covid regulations. We had a junior suite with a sea view on the top floor and half board. Food was very good and drinks were very reasonably priced (we were given a special 20% discount as return visitors in January).

Hotel's Favorite
Is how we felt to once again be welcomed to the Porto Santa Maria Hotel last week. Having enjoyed all our previous stays, this one was extra special during ongoing restrictions due to the COVID pandemic. We felt safe at all times. Everywhere was scrupulously clean with many hand sanitizing points and adherence to current regulations. None of the above marred our pleasures of a sunny balcony, watching liners come and go, comfiest ever beds and centrality to market and plentiful excellent restaurants. We will be back!

Most of Funchal is very built up with huge hotels hogging the sea front and a bus ride from the town itself. Port Santa Maria is ideally placed on the east, right beside the sea, though with pedestrians able to walk in front of it. A fortress, church and cobbled streets give the area real character and to steop out for a meal in the busy locality after a cocktail in the hotel bar is a very pleasurable experience. From our balcony we could see the sunrise in the morning and sunset in the evening, with great liners coming and going every day. The breakfasts were excellent as was the swimming pool and jacuzzi. We would have preferred not to have music by the outside pool so never lunched there again but maybe others like it. Our 'junior suite' was spacious and very well equipped though it seemed a pity on this sunny isle to have brown and beige as the decor. We have been back two days into a chilly English January and are still haunted by the swaying palm trees outside our balcony and the waves crashing below and the sunny days we enjoyed.

Chosen for ease of access, indoor swimming pool, proximity to promenade, restaurants and the city centre with no steep hills to tackle. We upgraded to a suite and the extra space was excellent. Ours had direct access to the gardens and caught the afternoon sun , views of arriving liners and the sunset. The staff were delightful, welcoming and caring. We enjoyed the meals. A huge range for breakfast with mini pastel de nata that melt in the mouth. The evening dinner set menus were varied and tasty. There was always fruit salad available for suite as well as a more elaborate choice. We loved the jacuzzi on the roof with its 360 degree view of the whole of Funchal. We have already booked to return

We'd split our stay in Funchal and this was the second hotel after staying in the Cliff Bay - maybe that's why the room for improvement was more noticeable. Staff were lovely, though not as friendly and professional here on the reception desk. The location is perfect for enjoying Funchal and the old town and there are so many lovely restaurants nearby. We did enjoy lunch in the pool bar a couple of times but very much let down on the second visit by being served a pork wrap instead of a vegan wrap with no real apology. Drinks in the bar at happy hour were great value, though there were no snacks and no real atmosphere at happy hour or later. There were always lots of sunbeds to enjoy soaking up the sun, though the roof terrace was our favoured spot as it was quieter, the beds had soft cushions and we had the hot tub to ourselves. Breakfast was good, food choices plentiful and hot and the staff here were great. The weather was superb and we enjoyed eating outdoors and could also enjoy a glass of fizz with breakfast. However, on our last day the restaurant was late to open which meant we had to rush before our car to the airport. We'd booked a suite which gave us an amazing view of the fireworks on New Year's Eve. This was an absolute highlight of our stay!
