Tranquil haven, surrounded by bird song and sea. Relaxing, comfortable and with excellent staff. The hotel is of traditional style, had a superior double with gorgeous sea view. Room was very spacious with a lovely patio and a large bathroom. Whilst it's a little old fashioned, that is also it's charm. Corridors and public spaces are spotless, as is the room. Beds are comfortable, large and with luxury linen. WiFi great, and facilities in room of good standard. Kettle, fridge, corkscrew, candles, matches, toiletries of high standard. Pools are good, breakfast is fresh with plenty of choice. Will definitely try to come back. Good value for money. Peaceful.

This hotel well located, right on the ocean and a short, flat walk in to central Funchal. Be aware that the hotel is in desperate need of a renovation (of course then the price will go up significantly). They have done a good job at maintaining the facilities but there is only so much that can be done. The whole facility is clean. Service was friendly and good, including making an excellent reservation for a tour of Madeira. The breakfasts had good selection with eggs made at the time.

I cannot offer a review of our stay in this hotel because ... we were unable to stay in it. Instead, I will relate what happened. My wife and I (traveling with a small dog) booked a villa in the hotel for 8 nights, starting on January 6, 2024. The hotel advertises this space as having 1076 ft² of living space with one living room, one bedroom and two bathrooms. To quote from the description: "Traditional house with access through the Penha França Mar building. Offers ample outdoor spaces with flower gardens and has an outdoor terrace with a solarium. There guests can relax and enjoy panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean." Upon arrival before noon from a red-eye flight from Lisbon we were told that we have to "wait until 2:00 pm when the room will be ready for you to check into." After killing over 2 hours and very eager to check in and rest, we were informed by the same receptionist that "unfortunately the villa is occupied until March 6th". This had been a mistake on their part, and they could not offer us the villa. We were offered to "save about $340" by taking 2 (non-adjacent) rooms, each about 170 ft² with tiny windows and narrow beds (US readers - think Motel 6), overlooking a wall ("garden view" in this hotel's parlance). We refused and left, after I made a last-moment reservation for a hotel in Funchal that actually offers what it advertises. Throughout our communication, the receptionist had a slight I-am-doing-my-best-to-look-sorry-but-in-fact-I-am-laughing-at-you-suckers attitude. It is impossible for me to say if this was a bait-and-switch situation or just sloppy clerical work, but in either case: it was a very unpleasant way for us to start our vacation. Future guests making reservations at Quinta da Penha de França: proceed with caution.

The best thing about this hotel is the staff. They are excellent, friendly and helpful. Worthy of special mention are Angela, Fatima, and Norberto in the restaurant on the upper site. As the half board menu has one main course option daily, with starters often unsuitable, being fish or meat based, they kindly arranged for us to have salads, often with avocado, as a substitute starter. Generally speaking, the food was good, but designed mainly for meat and fish eaters. If you are vegan or vegetarian, they will accommodate your dietary needs if you ask. The restaurant on the upper site is accessible only by steps, so if you have mobility problems, do bear this in mind. The bedrooms are cleaned daily and beds made, but I am not sure how often the bedlinen was actually changed, as the duvet cover had the same dirty mark on it throughout our whole stay. There is a bath with a shower over. It is not easy to get in and out of if you have mobility issues. The tap dripped constantly and was not repaired, even though we had reported it to reception. The soap/shampoo needed several squirts to get it to lather, and we had to use a lot of it to get clean. The biggest disappointment was that the 'heated' pool on the upper site clearly wasn't. It was even colder than the sea. We ventured in only once. The coldness may have numbed our aches and pains, but we risked getting a chill. Needless to say, we did not attempt any more swims. It had been an important reason for staying in this hotel, and the management's decision not to heat it was disappointing, to say the least. If it hadn't been for its wonderful staff, this hotel would have merited only three stars from us.

Although the location was lovely and the pool area was great, I'm not entirely convinced it deserves four stars. The hotel had some issues (slow drain, blackout in the room, etc.) feels a bit outdated, and I found that most of the staff weren't very attentive or friendly, with a few exceptions.

Hotel was lovely - Maintained very well and the grounds are beautifully peaceful. Breakfast was ok too, not great but definitely not bad at all. Staff were fantastic and we enjoyed visiting the sister Hotel Franca Mar next door aswell. Swimming pools were lovely in both hotels and the views beautiful. Stayed with my son as part of his 21st Birthday celebrations and hiking base. Great location for a base and highly recommend staying here 👌 Hotel even left a bucket of champagne for sons birthday which was a nice touch 🍾😊

We recently returned from a 3 night stay and wouldn’t hesitate to return as we had a really great stay. Plenty of positives: - the hotel complex itself is great, it’s a little bit quirky, made up of a number of different buildings all connected by lovely gardens with a nice small pool area - The location just a 15 minute stroll to the centre of Funchal is excellent with some good bars and restaurants in the immediate vicinity - The room we stayed in was a superior double/twin with side sea view and was spacious, clean and tidy with a superb view of the sea. A little dated but it sort of added to the charm - The sister hotel; this was a nice little bonus as guests are able to use the facilities of the Penha Franca Mar which meant we could use the sea front pool and access the sea from there. We were also able to walk back from Funchal along the seafront/harbour back to the Penha Franca Mar and use the lift and cross the bridge to get back to our hotel. A much better option than walking uphill along the main road! There were a small number of things that we felt could be improved and would really make the hotel exceptional: - There was no tea/coffee provided in the room which we felt was poor. - The hotel reception doesn’t provide an iron. They offer a laundry service but that’s not much good when you’re only staying for a long weekend and it takes a day or two to have your clothes returned! - Joe’s Bar didn’t open until 5 so as we were spending our early evenings/nights in Funchal we never got chance to visit which was a shame as we’d heard good things. - The breakfast was a little disappointing. The setting on the outdoor patio is superb but the food didn’t quite match up for me. It’s not bad by any means, there’s a decent enough choice and quality is okay, but I just expected a little bit better, plus the glasses for fresh orange were so small I had to refill about 8 times! Despite these minor quibbles the Quinta Da Penha De Franca will be at the top of our list when we return to Funchal and we would definitely recommend this hotel to others.

This hotel is in a good location, with plenty of amenities nearby without the frantic feel of the city centre, which is a 15 min walk away. We were in the main house, rooms were old fashioned but clean. Breakfast was pretty good and there's a nice bar and good restaurant. The swimming pool was freezing in December. Housekeeping came way too early (0930 ish) which meant I only got my room serviced once in 7 days as I just wasn't ready for them early enough. Additionally, the bottle of body lotion in my room was almost empty when I arrived, and only 2 x quarter toilet rolls were left. It is not pleasant to be left other people's products, especially the body lotion which was never replaced. The reason this is only a 3 blob review is that my mother was charged €4 for tea bags upon checkout. There was also cream and coffee in the small bag, but she just wanted teabags (in addition to the 2 provided) and wasn't given a choice of getting exactly what she wanted, nor told she would be charged for it. This was the last and lasting impression we got of the hotel and really leaves a bad taste in the mouth. It seems incredibly stingy, I have never been in a hotel which charges for teabags, especially not €4 and it seems particularly illogical given they didn't check we hadn't emptied the minibar (with no way of charging us once we'd left) and teabags are provided at breakfast, encouraging people to take them from there, when this is specifically forbidden. A very nice hotel spoiled by pettiness.

I made a reservation for the Quinta da Penha de França hotel in Funchal, Portugal from November 29 to December 2, 2023 through Booking.com in May 2023. In August 2023 I received a message from this hotel through Booking.com asking me to verify my credit card. This was followed by a second message from the hotel saying the first message was a fraud attempt and should be ignored. I should have cancelled after this security incident, but I didn’t. We arrived at the hotel today and went to check in. The receptionist told us we were not staying here, and sent us to the Penha França Mar. This is not the hotel I booked, but we drove down to check it out. The street in front of this other hotel was dug up, so the parking area was blocked off. Upon arrival at this other hotel, I asked to see the room. We were then walked out of the hotel and across the parking lot to the Rivas Fish & Seafood Restaurant. This is where our room was located. The room was old, dirty and they had no water! It was nothing like the pictures we’d seen of the hotel, because it was not the same hotel. It was in fact a fish restaurant! We left and went to a different hotel. Booking.com is now refusing to cancel our reservation and this just seems like a scam. I’m not a fan of the bait and switch at all.

There is definitely something about this place, from the lovely, friendly lady at reception to the warm friendliness of the staff at breakfast to the kind, helpful pool attendant. Surrounded by giant, concrete hotels this is a lovely, traditional hotel set in beautiful, mature gardens. The peacefulness of sitting by the pool surrounded by trees in the top part is perfect or take the lift to the Mar and enjoy the sea and restaurant. Breakfast is excellent, freshly baked bread and cakes or cooked breakfast, and omlette if you ask. Only two niggles here and they are my personal taste, hated the juice machine, watery, synthetic tasting. Not keen on the coffee machine either, but managed with a double expresso, as I like strong coffee. We stayed in the older, traditional hotel and we had a room in the house in the centre of the garden. Neat, tidy and clean with a comfy bed. Traditionally furnished, which suited us. Minibar fridge and safe. Kettle and cups in the room, I always bring my own teabags, so very happy with that. On a Friday they have a DJ in the restaurant at the Mar (lower part of the hotel)was lovely to listen to the music and watch the waves and fishing boats. All in all fantastic value and I look forward to visiting again next November.
