Guests have called out the Pestana Royal All Inclusive hotel for its exceptional cleanliness, with many appreciating the daily room service and immaculate grounds. The range of amenities, including well-maintained pools and diverse dining options, receive general acclaim, yet some believe they could benefit from modernization. Despite the spacious rooms offering sea views, reviewers warn of the need for interior updates. The hotel's staff earn rave reviews for their impeccable service, contributing greatly to guests' experiences. While the location offers stunning vistas, a few travelers find it somewhat remote. The serene atmosphere is a highlight, enriched by live music at breakfast, though some areas are said to lack vibrancy.

Sixth visit just completed at the Pestana Royal. As in previous visits, everything was enjoyable from the moment we arrived, through to the time of leaving. As previously stated in my earlier reviews and as others have commented 5* refer to facilities on offer! The Royal meets them all!
All Inclusive, distinct from traditional 5* categorises the comprehensive food services and related bar and drinks offerings. They are not and do not purport to be the 'bees knees' of culinary delight! The overall package offered at the Royal (and 4 other Pestana AI hotels we have visited) represents good choice, value for money and variety to a considerable spread of differing nationalities. They are in no way competing or trying to emulate traditional 5* hotel offerings!
My personal opinion is the food and dining options are excellent in relation to the price paid. Offerings are limited for sure, no two days are the same keeping waste to a minimum. It is reflected in the price you pay. A general guide - 5* traditional expect to pay from £250 upwards per room night including meals (no drinks!) compared to Pestana 5*AI at £140 per room night, drinks included. No comparison!
To those people who wish to complain about the food offered at the Royal, what do they eat back home and at what price???
That said you pay your money, you make your choice, but be fair and compare proper like-with-like.

Sermon and rant over, the Royal offer a relaxed surrounding with good facilities in fabulous surroundings. Yes a little out of town but compensated with regular Free courtesy buses to Funchal marina.
The friendliest staff ever from Manager to Cleaner, totally committed to customer satisfaction. Eat, drink and be happy and enjoy yourselves is my motto. The Pestana Royal continues to provide us with all we can ask for. Do not be swayed either way by negative reviews.

Thank you Pestana Royal. We will be returning later in the year for sure.

The reception team were professional, friendly & customer service was exceptional, nothing was too much trouble. Dining staff didn't stop, they made sure tables were cleared and your glasses of wine or soft drinks were topped up, always spoke and had a smile. The bar staff didn't stop also and were generous in their measures. Our room along with the hotel and pool complex was spotless. We tried the snack bar by the pool a couple of times and the burgers are fresh & cooked to order but their garlic bread is so nice, we had that on its own with a glass of wine. The wine beer and soft drinks you help yourself. The main restaurant food was ok but not as good as the themed restaurants, maybe re-visit and refresh the menus a little. My favourite meal though was at the Italian themed restaurant, I had black risotto with prawns and peppers, this was so moorish and balanced in flavour. The cakes and deserts especially the fig tart was delicious also. They have a Madeira Wine Library where you can taste the different Madeiran Wines and aperitif's. The location was perfect for us and the hotel has a free shuttle bus into town where we did the cable car to the top and the toboggan back down. Overall we had a lovely relaxing break and nothing was too much for the staff, giving tourist information tips and best days to visit different locations etc.

From romantic spa, to spacious room, warm sunny days, free town centre travel, close to the beautiful city centre, whilst set in quiet beach cove location. Food, drink, service and quality. 5 star all inclusive rate in a deluxe sea view balconied room booked direct with Pestana for around £100 per night per couple, what is not to like . Would recommend and will return

Just back from an 11 night stay at this hotel and we loved it. Great location with a coastal promenade to walk into Funchal and also Camara de Lobos, a pretty little fishing village, with places to stop off for a drink. There is also a free hotel shuttle bus into Funchal. A taxi would cost 10 euros but there are also local bus stops outside the hotel

We liked to sit and eat on the terrace outside the restaurant. We enjoyed the food and thought there was a great choice available. Had two meals in the Italian Restaurant and the pizza there is one of the best I have ever had, the base being so thin and crispy. Never had lunch in the main restaurant, if we were hungry we got food from the snack bar - mostly burgers, toasties, hot beef sandwiches baguettes, fries and plenty of salads, fruit, yoghurts and cake.

The service everywhere was really good and everyone very friendly.

The beer was fine, as was the red and sparkling white wine. Dont know about the white wine but was told the rose was very good.

If you wanted to see the entertainment it was on most nights. Some acts better than others, we particularly enjoyed a band of three guys who we thought were very good and also a male and female duo.

We had paid extra for a room with balcony and sea view. I must admit I was a little disappointed when I first saw it and did go to reception to check that I had got what I had paid for. I had and it was actually fine. Our housekeeper was a lovely lady who kept our room spotless.

So all in all we loved the Hotel Pestana Royal and would definitely recommend anyone stay there and hope that we too may return one day.

First impression the hotel looks good, very nice reception area, garden and swimming pool area. However, the only restaurant open every day was the buffet which was average. The pizzeria was open on two nights. The other two restaurants were closed. The lift to the beach was out of order and there was no shuttle bus to the town, The beach is mainly stony with black sand. The only place to spend the evening was a huge lounge with a small bar, often with only one barman. No atmosphere. During the day the only place to get a drink was the pool bar which had some sandwiches etc but very dull atmosphere. The entertainment team was one lady who organised bingo, wine tasting etc.
The worst thing about our stay was that we paid to upgrade to a Superior Deluxe room but got a very small room, with a bathroom separated from the room by a glass wall and no door. There were blinds on the windows but didn't actually fit properly so there were gaps. This was totally unacceptable. Also there was one electric socket that was for the bedside lamp and at ground level. No razor sockets in the bathroom, so not possible to use a razor or charge a toothbrush. There was a hairdryer in a drawer but nowhere to plug it in. The fridge was tiny and in the wardrobe on top of the safe!
We complained the next day at our welcome meeting and were shown 3rooms not much better. Then the receptionist said she had found another room. It was what we should have had in the first place, very large with a kitchenette, sofa and large balcony. Plenty of sockets and a razor plug and integrated hairdryer in the bathroom. The bathroom, however, needed upgrading.
The good points were the staff, who couldn't do enough for you and were very conscientious about cleaning.
We will not be returning to this hotel. We have travelled and stayed at hotels around the world and have never come across such a bathroom design!

We stayed here in May 2022 for a week. Lovely reception area and nice suite with a full sea view. WiFi was very good with no issues. Bed a bit hard but big. Shower was not very powerful at all. We requested an iron and ironing board which was delivered in less than ten minutes but a couple of days later no iron or ironing board which had been taken from the room with no communication at all, we had tucked the iron away in a cupboard so they would have had to search for it.

The pool area was nice and we never had an issue getting a sun-bed. The poolside bar was good with drinks on tap, although not top shelf, but there was a steady supply of snacks. I would recommend the cable car, Tropical gardens, (quite hilly), and the toboggans were great fun, (15 euros per person). The excursions were good although a bit cramped as the minibuses are quite small unless you book a Mercedes’ minibus, (more pricey).

Food was good but as with all buffets they tend to become a bit samey. Staff were brilliant except for one girl who only seemed to smile if you weren’t English 😂.

I would recommend hiring a taxi driver for a private tour and compare prices. The people were lovely and the tour drivers and taxi drivers were friendly and extremely knowledgable.

Ther is a lovely restaurant that specialises in meat and a sister restaurant that specialises in fish in the fishing village in Funchal with a lovely view.

We didn’t have an airport transfer booked and paid 34 euros from the airport to Funchal and 28 euros for the return trip to the airport.

The hotel had a plentiful supply of bottled water and this was available on a table just outside the main restaurant and also on request.

There is also a free shuttle bus twice a day from the hotel to the marina and back again.

At the time of writing face masks were mandatory on all public transport, tour buses, the cable cars and pharmacies.

I have only rated this three stars as there is room for improvement but this is not a negative review and I would definitely recommend this hotel as 95% of staff were extremely helpful and cheerful.

We enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel and Madeira for a holiday.

We were made very welcome from the moment we arrived. Staff in most areas were pleasant and attentive. We ate at Campo di Fiori (Italian) on one evening. The food was delicious and it was nice to be served at the table instead of self service in the buffet restaurant. All Inclusive is worth the extra cost. Food available from 7am till 9.30pm. Alcohol from 11am till midnight. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. You can ask for robes and slippers from reception to use free of charge. We were not made aware of this at check in and only found out by asking another guest. Pool was really cold but can't expect any different in January. Indoor pool however was lovely and warm. Sauna and jacuzzi also available to use. I would use Pestana Royal again however there are more Pestana hotels nearer Funchal town centre.

After booking this hotel, read numerous reviews giving poor reviews especially about the food. I would like to say they were so wrong. I enjoyed all the meals I had here. Good selection, well presented and well varied. The staff were wonderful and attentive, but not enough of them, but that did not stop them from giving good service always with a smile. The only negative was that the tables were very close together which made it seem like a school dining room, but that was the only disappointment. The hotel was spotless, the pool area the same with more sunbeds then enough so no rushing to get one which made it more relaxing as no stress. The bedrooms quiet small but adequate for what you need, a kettle and fridge and a free safe. The entertainment was excellent and varied and attended well by those staying. The hotel is on the outskirts of Funchal a bit too far to walk but a free bus ran every half hour into Funchal and every hour back. We used it most days and it was great. I look forward to returning to this hotel on any future visits to Madeira.

We just came back after spending 5 nights in this wonderful hotel. We absolutely loved it! It is difficult to please teenagers but my both boys enjoyed the hotel, food and of course swimming pools.
The location of the hotel is very convenient, only about 30 mins from the airport and about 15 mins to Funchal town centre. There is usually a mini bus service however it was suspended now due to Covid. We used taxi services instead. They have many 7-seaters and for our large group this was the most convenient way and cost €10 each way. Alternatively there is a bus that stops near by and cost €2
There is a beach nearby. Usually you can get access straight down by a lift from the hotel but it wasn’t working at the moment. However the walk is not too far about 600 meters. The water temperature even end of October was +23! There are parts with black sand but also some stones and pebbles. We brought our wet shoes and were very happy about that!
The hotel is remarkably clean! It is actually spotless. Our room was cleaned up every morning to a perfect standard. We had a family room for 3 and as an upgraded got a sea view as hotel wasn’t at 100% capacity. This was very nice extra !
The main restaurant has good selection of food. Breakfast was certainly my favourite with hot English breakfast, ham and cheeses, many different types of roles and pastries and lots of different fruits!
Dinner was attentive by the staff as they would bring you wine , sangria or water which was very nice. Everyone in the hotel was friendly and very polite.
I also tried yoga , Pilates and stretching classes. They are run every morning and instructor is very knowledgeable. We did go to sauna and indoor pool one afternoon when it was too windy outside. I also used spa for sports massage as received a complimentary voucher of €10 off as discount
Near the hotel there is a great shopping cemetery only 10 mins walk! It’s open until 23:00 every evening.
We also attended entertainment in the evening. Thursday night live band was the best! They were Amazing and created great atmosphere.
Madeira is a lovely place! So much to do! You will be spoiled for choice. We would definitely be back as only discovered a small part of what this wonderful island has to offer!
And of of the best things in this hotel- tropical gardens and sunset views . Absolutely magical!

The Pestana Royal Hotel is a well planned building with two lift access to all floors and facilities, the main two swimming pools are great and well able to cater for the masses in high season. However the gym indoor pool is very small, especially if you want to swim lengths for say 30 mins as is the gym and spa facilities. Again in high season you may not get the opportunity to use the gym equipment as there is very little of it.

Plenty of space for sitting around the outside pools and seem more than enough loungers to meet demand

The bedroom , bed, storage, TV, and tea-making facilities all good..

The all inclusive food and drink is more than satisfactory

The only thing that in my view lets this hotel down is the small Brown square, Formica tables used in the main restaurant, they certainly do not help deliver a five star image.. More like an Army Canteen.in presentation.

Overall we were satisfied with the hotel experience and will go again

One final point, the advertising material focused on distant shots of the building all with balconies. So when you book ensure you ASK whether the room has a balcony. If you do it on site when you find you don’t have one, expect to hand over some of your hard earned spending money to get the “ Upgrade”, as it’s called
