2022 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best
A hotel with soul, just like a good wine. The Vine is sophisticated and luxurious. With a touch of simplicity and discretion, just the way you like it. A dip in the panoramic pool, a vino-therapy session in the spa or a gourmet dinner with a view over the city: these are just a few of the pleasures awaiting you at The Vine.

We've just returned from a week at The Vine and although we were not ready to leave Madeira, we would not have wanted to spend any more time in the room or the bed! We booked The Vine for location which was excellent and the general standards and quality, although we wouldn't normally opt for somewhere so style-focused. The rooftop bar/pool was a real bonus with the comfiest sunbeds I've ever used - I just wish they'd spaced them out a little more and it's not great when you have to crawl on because its wedged between others, leaving nowhere to put your drink. From the moment we arrived it was obvious this hotel is uber-styled (and award winning) with a seating area by reception looked a bit like the Olgas in Australia but soft and squishy. The bar has two enoumous cauldrons with a soft rock in each (a nest?) and the adjoining breakfast area has some fairly awesome structures on the ceiling (backbones?) - very Indiana Jones ... or maybe something completely different we were missing?! Something to talk about but not welcoming and doesn't seem to be somewhere you're meant to relax As many people say, it is dark everywhere! You need to bend to see the right button in the lift due to lack of light. We were in 505 (Prestige Double) The room was dark and we had to keep the blind down as you could see into flats opposite and them into us, but up a bit to let in some light The bed - hmmm - The Vine has good bed reviews but ours was far from it! Both sides were hard and my side had a definitely tilt in the mattress towards the edge. We talked to reception who wrote it down. They'd put a "topper" on - another duvet - and my bed tilted all week. What it needed was a new bed. My back was not happy and still isn't The button panels used to operate everything drove us both spare and you'll need glasses if you use them for reading to see all the little notes, then just keep your fingers crossed they do what they say! The first two nights I stranded my husband in the loo trying to turn off the bedside light when everything went out at once - he was not amused. But we had no bedside tables with lovely lamps as shown in all the ads, just overhead spots and angle lights that aren't on the main rig so you have to get out of bed to turn them off individually. Grrrr. The blinds had a mind of their own. Even with lights on all mirrors are dark The raised pebbled bathroom floor hurt feet and we got fed up with stubbing toes on the portable towel rail. Look out of the window and people hung towels outside for them to dry for everyone to see. And the stupid bath just acted as a wash bag stand as we had no shelf, plus somewhere to try and dry our towels! There's more of the same but you get the gist - just not practical and very irritating. We've paid a lot less for a lot more Our daughters room without the bath was a lot more spacious but by the lifts and noisy Finally I wish the hotel had not continued to play their muzak full volume over the top of the Queens funeral while the guests in the seating area in reception were trying to watch on the big TV screen - a little thoughtfulness would have been appreciated

We stayed here for a week. Although I was dubious, having read other reviews, the location of this hotel is great. It is above a shopping centre, but actually, this did not spoil it in any way - it is ideally positioned for waking to the old town and also up in the other direction towards Camara de Lobos. We had a prestige room, with a view out to the mountain and the sea, which was lovely - it was very spacious, although the dark decor mad the room extremely dark. The whole interior of the hotel is quite dark, which we didn’t like, with the exception of the ground floor where reception is. Lighting in the room is a bit hit and miss - difficult to work it out - but there was a light around the bed which did go on if you got up at night, and this was helpful. We thought the room layout was a little strange, with a glass partition separating the room from the bathroom facilities - the partition was see through from both sides and the bath and sink was completely visible from the room. There was a door to the separate toilet and shower, which at least afforded some privacy. Breakfast was nice - good selection, although the hot buffet food could have been a bit hotter. You can ask for an omelette or boiled eggs to be cooked freshly, which was nice. Pool area was really lovely, with great views, and the jacuzzi area was really lovely too. The bar up there is lovely for a drink too. Staff were all friendly, courteous and helpful - particularly Carmo, who served us for breakfast most mornings, and Charles on the reception desk.

Choosing the vine hotel is a perfect decision. Located in a mall with many shops, restaurants, a supermarket, and the mall has several restaurants. The hotel's location is good in the city itself; we reached many places by foot, such as walking to the cable car (teleférico), the marina, the boardwalk, and more. The rooms in the hotel are beautifully decorated, very comfortable, and modern. We stayed in a junior suite. The hotel gives an unrestricted variety of drinks in the mini bar and chocolate every evening. The hotel staff is kind and warm. The breakfast is enjoyable, and there are various foods in the buffet. It's pleasant to go in for breakfast when the dining room staff welcome you with a smile and ask what to prepare for you beyond what's on the rich buffet. The pool on the roof with a magical view, and the water in the pool is warm and pleasant for swimming. We enjoyed staying in the jacuzzi on the top of the hotel and in the indoor jacuzzi. In conclusion, we enjoyed the hotel, the hotel's atmosphere, and the rooms' cleanliness, the room service, and we generally liked the various treats in the hotel. We will undoubtedly return to the hotel if we come to Madeira again.

The Vine hotel is situated only minutes away from the harbour , the best restaurants and the main shopping area, so it’s well placed for a city break. The hotel is beautifully designed as are the room, we stopped in a junior suite, which was a large room, with a huge 2 person bath in the bedroom area, with a separate shower and toilet area. The staff are polite, professional, efficient and friendly. The breakfasts buffets ( cold and hot) contained everything we wanted, we also frequently ordered omelettes, which were perfectly cooked. We were on the second floor, the only downside and this was a very minor one for us, was the noise from the street, which started about 7am and went on to about 11pm. If you are sensitive to noises, I would pack some earplugs. Don’t let that put you off as this is an amazing hotel.

Hands off! Nothing like a 4-star, set aside a 5-star accommodation. Rooms are dirty, broken furniture, floor, mirrors, bad towels and no rack at all to hang them for drying, not enough storage space nor hangers, a stupid lighting control system, noisy rooms, no nightstand, just one single plug… and many more bad things. Stay away! There must be many much better alternatives in town.

We stayed here for 5 nights and it was lovely. Room is designed so well, cleaned everyday, breakfast had a lovely spread and very peaceful. Not overcrowded or noisy, always managed to have a bed by the pool, and use the spa to ourselves even. Perfectly situated near shops and promenade. Do not hesitate to book!

We stayed at The Vine in Funchal. Great location, most staff were absolutely wonderful and couldn’t do enough to help you. The food in the restaurant was very good. This hotel is on top of a shopping Center and feels like a city centre hotel rather than a holiday hotel. All rooms on the outside have no balconies! This was such a shame. The lighting is very complicated, especially if you wake and press the control for the blinds (?all on same key pad!) The rooms are dark. The main issue for us was lack of balcony.

This hotel is definitely not 5 star standard. The staff were not that helpful and just pointed at a table in the dining room on our first day with no explanation of what was available, others coming in to the restaurant were shown where everything was. We had an issue with our room and although it was resolved it should never have happened in the first place as it was due to a cracked sink leaking water in to drawer underneath - which contained an electrical socket. The drawer actually fell down and just missed my feet. Bar staff are extremely slow despite not being that busy info on TV screen in room needs to be updtaed. Rooms are dark with electronic control panels which are temperamental. Maids knock and enter regardless of a do not disturb notification on the door, they also fail to replenish Tea/coffee etc. Restaurant food is nice but it is so quiet it lacks atmosphere. Looks very stylish but impersonal and not worth the rating.

Booked a mountain or side sea view, gave them 2 options, we were taken to our room that overlooked a square with hotel rooms and apartments all around us and over a shopping mall roof.when we told the lady who showed us to our room, her reply was they have no rooms with those views intge hotel at all only one the top price one.not happy at all ,on the jet 2 site it clearly states these rooms are available, plus city centre rooms.somebody is not giving the true information,it is not right when people are paying good money and being misled in this way.staff lovely, but also the lighting in the rooms is terrible.would not class it as 5 star.

Pros: Location (centrally located in Funchal, but on top of a shopping centre) Friendly staff Good views from the roof top bar Cons: Does not give a comfortable and luxurious 5 star hotel feel; located on top of a shopping centre which can be handy for some things, but felt like a business/work serviced/concierged apartment rather than a nice fun family holiday hotel, doesn’t have a hotel lobby or a garden. Only one outdoor pool and that too unheated; Impossible to swim after 4pm and this was June. Very uncomfortable rooms, no bedside table, only one electric port at desk. The big wardrobe door on side of our bed kept opening and injured my son’s toes multiple times as he tried getting out of the bed, as it had sharp edges. In 5 days stay, not a single day the bedsheets or towels were changed; same bedsheet was just nicely spread back on the bed and used towels were nicely folded back. Breakfast quite limited for a 5-star, but I could get the eggs made as I wanted like I said Staff are generally very helpful.
