Prior to booking, we loved the idea that this was the oldest continuously open hotel on the Iberian Peninsula. Imagining guests frequenting the same place since 1764 absolutely fascinated us! It wasn’t hard to understand why they’ve managed to stay in business for so long, after our sojourn with them in the enchanting town of Sintra.

From the moment we arrived, the staff was amazingly helpful with parking, managing our heavy suitcases and ensuring we got settled in comfortably. They even delighted us by upgrading us to a balcony room at no extra charge, since it was still available during low season.

The hotel is situated right in the centre of town, which makes visiting popular tourist sites a breeze, as well as finding great restaurants, shopping and bars nearby. We had a beautiful view of the verdant valley below, as well as a sweeping vista of the town in the distance – all from the charming French-door balcony off our room.

Our accommodations were clean, bed was comfortable and our home away from home had all the modern amenities, despite its rather advanced years. We were relieved that we didn’t have to sacrifice any conveniences to enjoy the mesmerizing history of this ancient inn.

Being foodies, we were thrilled that the breakfast was the best we enjoyed in Portugal, both generous and delicious – and all made to order just for us! We even had a chance to grab a cocktail in the wee bar to cap off an exceptional stay. We wouldn’t hesitate to highly recommend this place to anyone considering visiting the charming town of Sintra!

We were lucky to stay at this oldest hotel on Iberian peninsula. Every room has a name of famous person instead of room number, old fashion key, very nice restaurants, where we were the only clients (due to pandemic), close to major attractions, very helpful staff, we were able to park our car for free during the day while visiting major attractions. We will definitely recommend this hotel!

This is the oldest hotel on the Iberian Peninsula but the careful updates to make this a stylish and very comfortable hotel have not detracted from its history. The staff goes above and beyond to make you comfortable. Due to Covid restrictions they ask you to make dinner reservations 48 hours in advance but plan ahead it is well worth it….some of the best beef Wellington I have had and the cod was delicious. Enjoy your stay in this wonderful little hotel.

The location of this hotel is wonderful- located right near the city center but not on top of it so you have some distance from the crowds. This and the views are the highlights of the property.

On the downside for us is that while noted as a historic hotel, the space, rooms and furniture are all worn and tired. This does not feel like a 5 star experience. We stayed in the Lord Byron suite and the living room was nice and spacious and a treat to have. Bed was comfortable and the bathroom was so tiny you were basically touching the bidet with your knees when using the toilet. I was very disappointed in the amenities but did love the location.

I stayed overnight for a quick mini-vacation in Sintra this past December 2021. Even though my stay was short, all of the staff I interacted with were kind, warm, super helpful, and friendly. A special note about the breakfast meal: I am gluten-free and vegetarian, and both the front desk staff and the dining room staff made sure to check in with me about what I could eat to make sure I got a good breakfast — I'm so incredibly grateful for the special care and extra attention! :)

I was lucky to stay in one of the rooms called "Tradição", with a balcony overlooking the forest — definitely worth the upgraded room price! It was magical to have the pretty French doors open to see and hear the nature outside. Room had all amenities (coffee machine, toiletries, safe), a large and cozy bed, and a very nice bathtub.

Staff were helpful at check in, and followed health protocols. Staff were also helpful when I returned at night (choosing a wine, room service), and the following day (offering tips for how to get to the sights I wanted to see, keeping my extra bag after check out so I could hike and pick it up later). And again, special thanks for the wonderful breakfast. :)

Side note: I am a new immigrant to Portugal, so I am learning to speak Portuguese — all were very nice and patient while I did my best to practice speaking, and spoke slowly so I could more easily follow along. Thank you for helping me learn! :)

I highly recommend Lawrence's Hotel, and I will always stay here while visiting Sintra. Location, staff, comfort are all top notch.

Had a simple lunch of toasted sandwiches and hand cut chips at the Lawrence Hotel cafe and it was brilliant. For a gorgeous historic 5 star hotel this cafe has a feel of being in a local family cafe. No tickets on themselves at all and the English speaking staff couldn’t have been more welcoming, friendly and relaxed. Not expensive either.

5 star building and room, most staff pleasant and helpful
On the website the bar is meant to close at 7pm, in the room leaflet at 9pm but in reality closes at 6pm.
Lady at reception very difficult to get through, when asked “do you deliver sandwiches to the room if needed’ she answers “I think so”, 10 minutes later someone brings a sandwich to the room not asked for .. (she’s Portuguese and so am I so no lost in translation excuse) shame .. rest was great!

This is a very mixed review. The hotel is beautiful overall and steeped in history. The public areas are very nice and there are lots of interesting corners to relax in. The breakfasts are excellent and the staff very pleasant. However, we booked a superior room which cost nearly 250 euros per night, and we did not enjoy a superior experience. The balcony terrace area was lovely, overlooking the forest, but despite there being plenty of room there were just two upright chairs out there. A table and sun loungers would have made it so much better and more comfortable. The room itself was small and dark, and the bathroom in dire need of renovation. There was a large crack in the basin and black marks in the bath, and everything just very tired. Because of this, it didn't feel very clean. The beds were uncomfortable with very bouncy mattresses, so we did not sleep well. We expected a lot more from such an expensive stay and the label 'superior room'. This was not a five-star experience.

Our daughter had her wedding party here and the whole hotel was reserved for this private function. This old and historical hotel is very cosy and I loved the old wooden floors polished so bright and the rustic furniture to match. Our suite was big and very comfortable and clean.
Throughout our 3 night stay, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The wedding party food (4 course menu) was very good. An excellent apero was served on the terrace before dining upstairs in the restaurant.
Thank you so much Team Lawrence‘s Hotel. Our stay was quite lovely!

During a Sintra tour, we were left for a time to get lunch. Our guide told us to go a block or two away from the central square to reduce tourist-extortion. We went into the oldest hotel in Portugal and had simple sandwiches. The highlight was Martha (maybe Marta) who chatted with us and offered helpful hints. She loves serving the 4 small tables coffee and light fare. Quaint little respite before hiking.

Precisely, what is the car parking situation if staying at this hotel. Where? How Far? How Much?
Answer from Arthur F

There are 2 free spaces outside hotel just before door entrance, otherwise they have a garage which was 20 euros. I would next time talk to hotel and ask about parking outside Sintra's one way system.
