Sitting 230 metres above sea level, it has fantastic views of the Serra da Arrábida, over the Atlantic ocean and over the lowlands and vineyards of the region. The Pousada includes cloisters from the old convent constructed in the castle. The Pousada de Palmela offers an elegant restaurant where you can enjoy a variety of local dishes paired with beautiful local wine. Wonderful location, this is a historic building and wonderful experience. The breakfast was spectacular, both in its setting and the extensive choices available. The hotel is infinitely quiet with very thick stone walls and beautiful pictures on the walls. There is a lot of history here. The only downside was when we arrived, I had specifically booked a family room that stated it came with a double bed and a smaller twin bed. In fact, it did not. The reception explained that the standard travel agent sites give false information, so if you are using booking.com, expedia or orbitz you probably won't get your choice of bed or type of bedroom, even if you think you are "upgrading" by taking a more expensive room.

Perched on the top of a hill with views over Pamela, Setubal and the Sado estuary. As the name suggests it is part of a castle. Rooms very comfortable and staff helpful and welcoming. Enjoyed the food in the restaurant but felt that the menu was a bit limited for a 6 night stay Easy access to Lisbon if required

The place is just extraordinary, the view on Palmela is stunning, the food is excellent, as is the service, expecially Magdalena at the bar and the dining room. I would recommend this hotel anytime ro everybody.

A beautiful, elegant 'castle' experience, away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. The Pousada Castelo Palmela is a unique and lovely hotel with excellent hospitality. The staff will make you feel welcome and well-cared for. The rooms are comfortable and very quiet. The breakfast is abundant and of high quality. Small but elegant touches abound: tomato jam for breakfast, chocolate on your pillow, a welcome local liqueur at check in. Don't come for the nightlife. Palmela is only 30 minutes from Lisbon but is actually centuries away. If you like to hear the birds chirp, walk the winery trail or hike in the natural park, this is a good stop for you. The pace is slow and the hospitality is of top quality. We enjoyed our stay very much. We thought the breakfast was excellent.…

My family of four stayed here (two children ages 7/11) for two nights after arriving at LIS and prior to headed to the Algarve. The drive from LIS airport was simply and easy. Arriving at night added a visual WOW factor, as we didn't realize how much the castle/hotel stands out sitting at the highest point of the town. Especially with it lit up in the evening. We really enjoyed exploring the grounds, cathedral and castle. We had dinner our first night at the hotel restaurant and were happy to find they had a children's menu. The second night we ate at the restaurant just down the hill (easy walk) and enjoyed that meal as well.

A return visit after 20 years Comfortable and spacious room, good international to channels for news catch up; good shower and reasonable view - once outside the views are 360’ and are especially good from the castle and tower Dinner was great - seafood - clams; filet and fresh tuna; limited wine selection - but ok Breakfast excellent light buffet with fresh produce Bar was a bit of a let down as it had no atmosphere But the staff were young friendly and engaging Parking - no problem outside We’ll be back sooner

We wanted a hotel on the way to the Algarve from Lisbon Airport to relax and decompress from our flight over. The hotel far exceeded our expectations. The hotel itself is in an old monastery adjacent to a castle that you can wander around and climb up towers for amazing views of the sea and Lisbon. The room was spacious, pristine and the beds were very comfortable. We were greeted by Hugo, the front desk person who quickly became our best friend in Portugal. He answered every question with patience and shared his knowledge of the area. Don't miss lunch at Bobo da Corte, a short walk into the castle. They really know their way around the kitchen. The buffet style breakfast at the hotel had everything anyone could ask for. Portuguese cakes and pastries, fruits, eggs, selection of regional cheeses, yogurts. The tables are set glassed in, around an open interior courtyard creating an open, airy feeling. This stay was a perfect introduction to Portuguese hospitality! We will be back.…

We had an amazing stay at the hotel, just perfect! The building is historic and well maintained, the rooms very nice and the views unbeatable. The entire staff were brilliant - friendly and helpful with excellent service at every turn. Beautiful hikes from the property. And the restaurant was very good. Cannot wait to return.

Naturally, the management was different 30 years ago and from what I can gather in the pics, some things were different such as walls of rows velvet curtains in the restaurant and the hallways had different decorations. However, the stay was excellent, the views breathtaking, and the experience was definitely worthwhile. I haven't been back in decades, but rest assured I will go back. Thanks for the memories.
