The location is superb if you are a tourist. All attractions are either nearby are reached via the convenient and economical transportation options. The Metropole is a quaint facility and step back in time. The furniture fabric and rugs are filthy and heavily worn down from decades of use without maintenance. The plumbing is archaic, no upgrades here. The public... More

You really can't get more down town than this. You walk out the front door into the vibrant city life of Lisbon. The hotel itself maybe in need of a few small touch ups to bring it back to former luxury of a few years ago but it is still essentially very comfortable. Standing on our gothic balcony and taking... This is a beautiful old hotel in a brilliant location in Lisbon. The bedroom and bathroom were spotlessly clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast were really good and provided a good selection of food. Looking forward to returning.

The hotel is not maintained at all. Old room, not every room has airc working. The worse is that on the 4th floor there are two rooms with toilet smell in the room. The hotel staff KNOW about this but continue putting people in the rooms! After a sleepless night we asked to move and were moved to another floor... More

Great location and the staff was very nice but the place itself needs to be renovated ASAP, the mattresses were circa 18th century, I felt the springs digging into my back as i desperately tried falling asleep without overthinking the situation. The fourth floor smells like a sewer facility but the staff was nice enough to change our room. I... More

This hotel hasn't been decorated in a long time, it has a grubby feel about it. Bought this hotel as they advertise aircon - which didn't blow out any cold air! Wifi was available but only in reception/restaurant area. Apparently renovated in 1993 seems more like 1963 though. Nice attentive & helpful staff.

The room was small with small little window, and during my last visit (in August... it was extremely hot) and sometimes unbearable to have a proper sleep. It was good for a short stay, and can't expect more with a price i paid for. However, I must admit, the location was good and centrally located with full access to buses,... More

Location can't be better. In the heart of Lisbon, easy access to the main amenities and transports. Walkable distance to the town hotspots but also to the touristic buses and tram 28. Certainly very helpful staff. Average breakfast. We have stayed in the past in old fashioned hotels but in this case the hotel is not only old fashionable, it... More

The location of the hotel is fantastic and the service is very good! It's close to everything and the square is really beautiful (although is a bit too noisy). This hotel must have been majestic in 1920s and it's appreciable that they wanted to preserve that typical atmosphere till today. But it's really too dusty and decadent now... some maintenance... The hotel is old and in need of a complete remodel/update. The guaranteed air conditioning happened to be out so they supposedly upgraded our room and supplied us with portable fans. The wifi didn't work so they supplied a booster of some sort which didn't work. The rooms door lock was a old fashioned hook and eye type. The paint... More

Staying in Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores

Neighborhood Profile
Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
