Located centrally in the Placa Rossio. That's about all I can say positively about this hotel! Someone with deep pockets should snatch this property up and do a total refurb. From the push button locks to the furniture from the 1950's???, Hotel Metropole needs some serious attention. Although I was traveling with my husband, I did not feel secure in... More

The hotel is located in an ideal place! It really isn't a bad place if you only need a place to sleep and shower. It is old, but ok, it is the staff that is the problem!!! The people at the front desk are rude. I waited with or luggage while my husband checked us in and heard the man... More

The hotel is in such shabby condition that it drained our spirits, so we shortened our stay. The carpeting was filthy and torn. The bedspread had multiple rips. Some dining room chair upholstery was ripped. The bed linens were so thin that one could almost read through them. The hallways were in serious need of paint. The bathroom tile and... More

We stayed here for a week in September, and enjoyed it so much that we booked an extra night at the end of our vacation - we had planned on staying close to the airport but the Metropole was so lovely that we just had to give it another go. The reception staff could not do enough for us, and... More

This is the second time I've visited Libson but the first time actually staying in the city. The first time was just a day trip and I remember seeing this hotel and thinking that when I came back I would stay at this hotel due to its great location. The hotel is located in Rossio Square which is right across... More

Location, location, location - This lovely art deco style hotel has to be the best location in the wonderful City of Lison - right in the middle of Rossio Square. Had a room on the 3rd floor with a balcony overlooking the Square. The rooms are spacious and very clean - good bathroom with all facilities - we found the... More

Stayed here on a one night stopover in Lisbon. Wasn't cheap but the location in the city centre determines that. However the entire place is very rundown with below average customer service & a breakfast standard to match. Wouldn't be returning considering there is so many other places in the same area of a higher standard

Lovely, very old hotel, in the centre of Lisbon. Very helpful staff. Good continental breakfast. Excellent value for money. Bedroom and bathroom very clean, though very old!! BUT money needs to be spent of refurbishment. Furniture worn out ( dining chars had very little seat left! ). Stair carpet so worn, it is almost dangerous. Having said all that, we... More

This was the worst hotel experience my husband and I have EVER had! The hotel was old, filthy, run down, smelly and not secure. The front door was unlocked at all times, even overnight, with no one on the entry level floor. The rooms had only push button locks, no dead bolt and a flimsy hook and eye closure. The reception... If you want to be in the midst of everything, this is a great location. The train station is a block away, the hop on/hop off buses are a square away, high end shopping is up the street, so many options and convenience from this location. We had read that the furnishings were a bit dated, but knew we would... More

Staying in Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores

Neighborhood Profile
Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
