#4 of 205 Specialty lodging in São Miguel
Furnas Lake Forest Living (we used to call Furnas Lake Villas) is considered one of the boldest tourist and architectural projects on the island of São Miguel. It became particularly known around the world for the Scandinavian input on the architecture of the buildings, but also on the interior design, while maintaining high modern standards and at the same respecting nature. Keeping a familiar and welcoming charisma and a modern and relaxing environment. Here, gardens and dense mountainous vegetation surround a peaceful area with 10 modern and fully equipped bungalows, swimming pool, reading areas, restaurant and bar, family and play room. Guest can hike and bike around the property and the lake (just 150 m from us), horse riding, canoeing, as well as all the other activities that the Islands offer, from whale watching to snorkelling and surfing. Furnas Lake Villas is just 35 min drive from the airport!

We were a group of 11 guests from Canada and had pre arranged our six night stay with the delightful owners Helena and Manuel who went above and beyond to make sure our visit was wonderful! Firstly...this is a gorgeous setting near the town of Furnas and a short walk from Furnas Lake which has a lovely trail to walk around the lake through gardens, a bamboo forest and historical sites. The grounds at Furnas Lake Forest Living are lush and verdant and the pool is refreshing on a hot day...they have organic gardens with herbs and greens and the property is bordered by a forest. It is quiet and serene ...soothing and calming. Exactly what we all needed! The one bedroom Japanese Villas (where most of the group stayed) are sparkling clean and modern with all conveniences and still cozy and comfortable. It is nice to have a kitchen to self cater as you please and a coffee machine in unit to make a morning cup. That said, the resort offers an excellent fresh breakfast daily at a modest extra cost and we really enjoyed these breakfasts featuring honey from their own apiary! I believe you can have the breakfast delivered to your villa but we chose to have ours as a group in their stunning bar/dining room where you can also gather in the evening for some wine or a cocktail. Since we were a larger group, Helena and Manuel arranged for a chef to prepare dinners for our group. This chef and his team made gourmet dinners for us using local ingredients and fresh caught fish. These meals were truly delicious with artful, creative presentation and fabulous flavours! Helena and Manuel have a terrific staff! Marlene was with us most of the week to take care of details and help with meals...always with a smile and she is very efficient. Andre, George and Joao were also great and we felt well taken care of all week long...thank you to everyone! Our whole group had a blissful stay and we highly recommend Furnas Lake Forest Living for a relaxing getaway from our busy lives. The attention to detail and the lovingly curated decor uses nature as an inspiration. My husband and I stayed in the Chestnut house which is tucked away at the edge of the property and is very private and comfortable...it has two bedrooms and two stories and would be great for friends or a family. You can stroll their property to see the horses, goats and chickens. It feels like a pastoral escape and is the perfect place to rest and restore. We would once again like to offer our gratitude to Helena, Manuel and their whole team for a magical stay!

We absolutely loved our stay here. We were made to feel incredibly welcome. The hotel helped us with a list of places of where to get our Covid tests, made local dinner reservations and provided us with a breakfast basket when leaving early one morning. The breakfasts were also delicious. It is a beautiful setting with wonderful staff.

Excellent place to stay at -must do - Furnas when staying on Sao Miguel. You have your own cabin, located around a garden and very close to the lake. It’s a small scale hotel with a personal touch and great staff. We recommend a hike to Furnas, have a look and take a bath in the Terra Nostra Parque, head towards the lake and take the Grena trail before you continue your trip around the lake back to the hotel.

We did a road trip around Sao Miguel in late November and stayed our last two nights on the island at Furnas Lake Forest Living.  The check-in process with Mariana was pleasant and thorough.  Our studio room faced the orchard and is overall pretty basic: clean, smart design, simple furnishings.  Towels are provided for guests to use at the hot springs.  The architecture of the villas and the surrounding buildings are lovely in this peaceful and serene environment. We returned early one evening and walked up the path to our studio where an unleashed dog ran at us out of nowhere then lunged and jumped at us.  We were pretty startled - when we approached our door we met its owner inside of our room.  While she was very pleasant and explained that a workman needed to access our room to install/repair a part in the wardrobe, I have never encountered in any country I have traveled where the staff or owner will enter your room without your permission.  This should serve as constructive criticism to alert guests by phone or email before entering their room.  We felt that this was a violation of our privacy and trust.  We had our passports and personal items in our room and it's not cool to assume you can enter our space without asking first.  It should be basic common sense in the hospitality industry and I hope the staff will learn from this experience.

Dear Elise, Thank you for your comments. The positive's always help us to keep our confidence on our work, and the negative's helps us to improve what's wrong and to offer always a better service. We are really sorry that you felt so disturbed with the entrance of our staff in your accommodation. We want to offer the best service and comfort to our guest, keeping all the details of the accommodation in good conditions. That's why if some service must be done, it is when guests are not in their accommodation. In hospitality industry the entrance in the accommodation by the staff is normal, other way how the usual daily cleanness, included in your stay, could be done? Unfortunately, you arrived before the conclusion of the service. We are really sorry! In addition, all our guests' belongings are the most "sacred" and protected by us. At this moment, and because of the Pandemia, the usual has changed: now, at Furnas Lake Forest Living the daily cleanness of the accommodation is done only if guest want this service, and the entrance by the staff in the accommodation for some other issue, is done only with prior guest permission. We hope you keep safe, Kind regards,

We spent two nights in a "villa" and we loved the location, very quiet next to Furnas lagoa with a nice trail. The villa is a bit dated especially the bathroom . No local information is provided (just a vague suggestion to visit the thermal pools). The way the bungalows are positioned means you can see inside the other ones which is an incongruence in a place that is for quiet seekers . The onsite restaurant is not open every day. We had dinner there once and it was ok but the vegetarian options are quite limited. We also had breakfast once, which was good, although the way they just bring you food without the option to choose (no buffet either) seems a bit unusual (and probably a waste of food). A good stay overall but nothing special.
