Casa Mãe is a property with a lot of heritage, the gardens are bordered by the 16th century antique walls, it is located in the historic part of Lagos, 5 minutes from the main beaches. We are now launching our soft opening and at the moment, we have opened our largest building, Jogo da Bola with its 22 rooms, its ORTA restaurant with its wide terrace and the concept store. There, you can expect contemporary, minimalist but playful design with much of local context, large balconies in all the rooms, with hammocks and the traditional Portuguese reixas, those traditional wooden grid panels that create a special atmosphere with just enough protection and transparency. About our restaurant, it is very much based on the farm-to-table concept, everything is homemade/ home baked/ homegrown, from the bread to the veggies! It offers a mix of casual fine dining/ gourmet and seasonal menu with healthy, raw food and gourmet breakfast options cooked in an open kitchen, using the produce of our inland farm cultivated according to organic and permaculture principles. Restaurant, farm, terraced garden and also a large concept store! In the new building Jogo da Bola, we have 120sqm dedicated to Portuguese design that is also promoting the work of our 24 collaborations with Portuguese designers and artisans that are showcased in our Casa Mãe magazine launched last May in Lisbon. At Casa Mãe we aim to be a space open to the community, we are expanding our property and soon (January) we will have more than 7000sqm with three different spaces and atmospheres. Besides our Jogo da Bola building we will have more two buildings, the carefully renovated master house from the 19th century with 5 unique rooms, the 3 rustic outdoor Cabanas in the aromatic garden.

Everything was lovely, the room, grounds, food, and especially the people. I did read both the glowing reviews and the critical reviews online, and was worried about what our experience would be like, but everything was perfect for us. I think some of the critical reviews came during a more difficult period during the pandemic, so I imagine the hotel was dealing with some pandemic related challenges like anyone else. Was established in 2016, so maybe a relatively new hotel that was still realizing its potential. I know things can always be better, but perhaps that potential has now been realized? The room: We stayed in Cabana Este...I don't want to say too much because I would want this room to be available when we go back :) Food: Some reviewers commented about food lacking flavor, salt. I agree that some foods did benefit from adding salt, according to my taste, but they always brought out some salt for us without asking for it, so that we can add to taste, which I much prefer than coming from the kitchen oversalted. So this was not a problem for us. Service: A lot of the critical reviews seem to be regarding service. We did not personally experience any issues. We definitely did not see or experience any rudeness. Everyone was extremely kind. I can see how if you are on a tight schedule, that the service could be seen as too relaxed. Perhaps cultural differences in expectations about the pace of service compared to our hometown or country could be a factor also.

We loved staying at this stylish and friendly hotel as a family party of three, including a wheelchair user. The main building and garden are fully accessible. Staff helpful and enthusiastic. The restaurant uses produce grown on site and otherwise from the region. We would thoroughly recommend it.

I was really disappointed with my stay at Casa Mae. I paid around 60 euros each for a manicure and pedicure, but the therapist who did my treatment clearly did not know what she was doing. She cut the skin around my cuticles, so I ended up with lots of small cuts and she painted my nails very unprofessionally; they looked like a child had painted them. She even later acknowledged that they did not have the proper facilities to give such treatments (there was not pedicure chair and foot bath which mean that I had to lay back on a hard massage chair while she poured water from a kettle into a bucket and then onto my feet). The polish only lasted a day before it chipped, she didn’t apply a basecoat, and only applied a topcoat on my feet. They really should not be offering treatments that they cannot provide at a high quality, especially as they market themselves as a 5* hotel. The hotel also prides itself of growing its own vegetables and fruits but the tomatoes in my sandwich and the fruits served at breakfast were utterly tasteless, which was strange because the juice and smoothies had flavour, and all the other food I had while I was staying in Lagos had flavour. The hotel water was also mostly lukewarm, which is very disappointing for a hotel this expensive. They pride themselves on being sustainable, but I fear this is hotel is very much “style over substance”. Another downside of my stay was being ignore by some of the staff in the restaurant. The women were lovely. But there was one male waiter who would always attend to the white guests much more frequently and quickly than he ever did to me. I expected a hotel this expensive, that calls itself a 5* hotel, to treat all its guests equally and with respect but that was not my experience. Save yourself a trip and book somewhere else.

My sister and I stayed at Casa Mae for 3 nights and splurged on one of the Baluarte Suites. It was a thoroughly wonderful stay with just a few minor quibbles. I would highly recommend the hotel to anyone seeking accommodations in Lagos. What I Liked The Baluarte Suite is supremely comfortable and incredibly stylish. It is incredibly well designed and has a great deal of privacy. The location adjacent to the old city wall makes a great juxtaposition between the old and new. Breakfast at Orta each morning was always a delight. Food was very well prepared, and service was efficient and friendly. Although we were advised that during busy times there would be long waits, I never experienced any delays. Service was friendly and always professional. The hotel is located just a short walk away from any number of shopping and dining choices in the Old Town, while the beaches are anywhere from a 20-30 minute walk away. The Spa treatment, and their resident massage therapist, does a great job and take advantage of a treatment during your stay. What Could Use Improvement I loved the design of the room, but sometimes it seemed like "form over function". Converting the Baluarte Suite into two full bedroom meant losing living room space, and there was not a lot of functional, comfortable seating in the room. I would have like a more functional refrigerator in the room. There's a mini bar, but there is only enough space for the products the hotel has on offer. Recommendations Take advantage of the free parking outside the city walls (which is conveniently located close to Baluarte, Casa and some of the accomodations). If you take your car out for the day, make sure to return to the lot early, since it does have a tendency to fill up later in the afternoon. Try the smoothies on offer at Orta - there were all very tasty!

If only I could move in and stay here forever! We booked a Superior room in the Jogo Da Bola building and requested the top floor. Our veranda was open to the sky and overlooked the outside patio area below. I was torn between booking one of these rooms or a room in the estate house but I'm so happy with the room we chose. The Jago Da Bola building is where the checkin desk is, the restaurant and the gift shop. It was nice to just head downstairs for breakfast or enjoy a drink outside. The estate house is further away on the back of the property but the pool is back there too. The entire property is so beautiful with all the gardens. You truly feel like you are tucked away in your own quiet private Lagos paradise. Breakfast was included in our stay and you could literally order anything and everything off the menu. We left very early on our last day and Miguel offered to have breakfast ready for us to take on the road with us. Miguel was so kind and generous during our entire stay he made sure we felt welcomed and all of our needs were met. Literally every aspect of our room was luxurious: the deep soaking bath tub, the towels, bath products, bathrobes, bed, linens, pillows, everything! There was a speaker in our room that played a custom Casa Mae playlist and we loved listening to their music while sitting on our veranda. I would highly recommend anyone stay at Casa Mae if you want to be completely blissed out. This is one of my favorite places I have stayed at all my life.

The property and the rooms are really special and quite beautiful - plus the location is convenient to town. The food is generally very good - especially at breakfast. However, the service has much to be improved - i think the staff is quite well-meaning, but a combination of not enough people (at breakfast there was 1 waiter for about 15 tables!), poor time management (we were gone all day, returning at 4:30pm to find our room just being cleaned), silly policies (after reviewing our final invoice and agreeing to it, we were told we had to come back to the lobby to return our keys, despite the room being at the top of the hill and the lobby at the bottom - something clearly only to serve them, not us), and some facility challenges - our lights didn't work on the 2nd day, no hot water on the 3rd. I wish them luck to address these issues, but as management never seemed concerned with any of them, I am suspect that it will improve.

We were so excited to stay at Casa Mãe - but what we experienced was so far below expectations I'm surprised that they are allowed to call themselves a five-star hotel. The service in the restaurant was atrocious. On our first night, we dined at Orta and had a really unpleasant interaction with a member of staff. We ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir and the response was 'are you just ordering that because it's the only one you've heard of?'. In fact, my partner is WSET qualified, but irrespective of this - it was so rude and arrogant. Unfortunately, this was one of many examples of thoughtless, insensitive comments being made for no reason I can see except for spite. There's relaxed service and then there is Casa Mãe service - 3 days our of 7 during our stay, we didn't receive one or more items from our breakfast order - it seemed like everything was too much trouble, despite the restaurant being empty or close to it a lot of the time. In addition, the food was mostly bland, tasteless and completely unseasoned. The ethos they are going for is good food, prepared simply and allowed to speak for itself - but there is a difference between prepared simply and not prepared at all. Our spa experience was terrible. After we booked our treatments, I asked for some larger robes to be provided as the ones in our room were too small for both my partner and I. My request was ignored, so we asked again at the spa when we showed up for our appointments - again, our request was ignored - rather than just apologise if robes weren't available, they acted like children and just pretended it didn't happen - it was bizarre and awkward. To me, the underlying message being communicated by not providing robes that fit us properly was that we were not welcome in the spa due to our size. For context, I am a UK size 20, which is only a few sizes above the UK average, so I can only imagine how guests who are in larger bodies or who are not as body confident as I am might be made to feel. The experience and how it was handled made what should have been a really relaxing experience fraught with anxiety - and the treatments themselves were also extremely subpar - my partner endured a custom massage where the masseuse made zero effort at consultation and I had a body wrap which only covered half my body and was delivered in a freezing cold room. The bed linen also felt cheap and nasty and we had to request extra pillows because they were so flat. When I shared some detailed feedback on our stay with Casa Mãe privately, they refused to address my concerns in a respectful way and instead gaslighted me about my experience and refused to provide any meaningful compensation. Pictures of the hotel and gardens look beautiful - and in some ways are - the gardens are very pretty - but there is clearly also a lack of maintenance - we saw signs falling off the wall and neon lighting which did not work. Fundamentally, however, I would just avoid staying here unless you love overpaying for stuff and don't care about being treated like a human being whilst on holiday.

We were all disappointed when a planned trip to Asia didn’t happen so treated ourselves to this luxurious hotel in Lagos. Wow! We stayed in one of the Baluarte villas and were amazed when we walked in for the first time… floor to ceiling windows, our own private pool and terrace, 2 luxurious bedrooms, and a shower which could be outside (if you open the doors!) “Farm to table” food at breakfast is a nice idea and almost there in terms of quality. The staff were super friendly and helpful. We will be back for sure! PS coffee machines in the rooms are on the way soon apparently (referencing other comments below).

Over all very good. Downgraded a dot because the kitchen is open and the smell of cooking permeates the entire building. Probably not such an issue in the summer with the many windows open, but certainly in the colder months with them closed against the colder weather. Not everyone wants to smell frying bacon first thing in the morning! A questionable design choice in a property that otherwise has it all.

We were there in September. This trip had been canceled twice already and we were so excited to finally get here. Upon arrival while we waited for our room to get ready we had a fantastic lunch outside with wine and a small dish. The gentleman who served us was funny and friendly and we knew right away that this was the place to be. We stayed six nights and enjoyed each day. The rooms are so clean and the staff was very friendly. Whenever I had questions about anything in town they answered right away. The morning we were leaving they offered to get us coffee even though the restaurant was not open yet. The next time we come to Lagos we plan on staying here. Also - about the location. It's at the top of the walled part of town so you walk downhill into the town center - 5 minutes away. I liked the fact that it was not in the center of town so it was quiet. Very close to the hotel is an old cemetery which is interesting to explore, and behind the hotel along the old wall are fantastic views of Lagos. Be sure to walk around and explore.
