Casa Mãe is a property with a lot of heritage, the gardens are bordered by the 16th century antique walls, it is located in the historic part of Lagos, 5 minutes from the main beaches. We are now launching our soft opening and at the moment, we have opened our largest building, Jogo da Bola with its 22 rooms, its ORTA restaurant with its wide terrace and the concept store. There, you can expect contemporary, minimalist but playful design with much of local context, large balconies in all the rooms, with hammocks and the traditional Portuguese reixas, those traditional wooden grid panels that create a special atmosphere with just enough protection and transparency. About our restaurant, it is very much based on the farm-to-table concept, everything is homemade/ home baked/ homegrown, from the bread to the veggies! It offers a mix of casual fine dining/ gourmet and seasonal menu with healthy, raw food and gourmet breakfast options cooked in an open kitchen, using the produce of our inland farm cultivated according to organic and permaculture principles. Restaurant, farm, terraced garden and also a large concept store! In the new building Jogo da Bola, we have 120sqm dedicated to Portuguese design that is also promoting the work of our 24 collaborations with Portuguese designers and artisans that are showcased in our Casa Mãe magazine launched last May in Lisbon. At Casa Mãe we aim to be a space open to the community, we are expanding our property and soon (January) we will have more than 7000sqm with three different spaces and atmospheres. Besides our Jogo da Bola building we will have more two buildings, the carefully renovated master house from the 19th century with 5 unique rooms, the 3 rustic outdoor Cabanas in the aromatic garden.

We recently stayed at the Heritage suite. A beautiful room that was well appointed . Staff were welcoming and helpful. Food was excellent although the hotel could expand their menu for those like us who had a longer stay . The hotel is situated in the old part of Lagos , And was one of the reasons we chose it . Close to restaurants and shopping . We were there at a quiet time of the year so we had The facilities and staff to ourselves . May be different when busy . Hotel has a beautiful garden and outdoor lounge area .

White and blue is the color scheme of this hotel stretching to be a trend setter. Reception was fine, but the room was trying too hard to be stylish. The bed was inches above the floor and for us over 50 types was very awkward. The tub was big enough for two, but not appealing as it gobbled up the room. There was no place to unpack and the minimal furniture was light weight without a comfortable place to sit. Overall the hotel was designed to be an outdoor place with minimal common space on cold or rainy days. A large lump in the stairwell appeared to be a wet rug covered with a tarp and didn't move during our several day stay. The food was generally the best part. Trendiness prevailed with unique and tasty dishes using home grown ingredients from the garden next door. We saw kale being picked and the sweet oranges came from the tree. The coffee was terrible (weak and light roast) so bring your own or plan on going out for breakfast.

My husband and I stayed in the Pergola Suite this past October. The hotel, property, and this suite are amazing. It's a charming, quiet oasis on the edge of town walkable to any place you want to go. The gardens are lovely. We only at breakfast at the restaurant. It's included, but unlike many hotels it's not a buffet. Food was great. I had a spa treatment that was lovely -- the combo massage, dry brush and mini facial. The hotel booked a lovely coastline boat tour for us that we enjoyed. We walked into town for dinner and to explore every night. The pool was incredible (water was chilly, but was a refreshing dip when we got hot), We sat on the terrace outside of our room, which was lovely. Highly recommend the hotel and the Pergola Suite.

Terrible; one of the most expensive places I've stayed with the worst service. I had a number of complaints - mainly that the pool, which I checked months, weeks, days and hours in advance would work was broken. There was no one at the Spa; I had to keep calling people for over an hour only to find the water was freezing cold. The room had cob webs. The bath toiletries stuck to my hair and skin. I arrived in the pouring rain; no one opened any doors for me or offered to take my (large) luggage; I had to ask for them to take it across the large garden on the other side of the property...No one provided any details on yoga or activities ever, the 'Queen' bed was two singles pushed together (very uncomfortable), the TV (which I had to request ordered to the room) was covered in greasy fingerprints. I was given wheat snacks when I told them I was gluten-free. No one knew how the heating worked; not all staff wore masks (during COVID requirements visiting my room etc.) and they refused to let me leave unless I paid full-price; treating me like some kind of criminal! The manager was 'unavailable' and when I emailed after I had to chase them multiple times for any reply; they didn't believe a word of what I said and basically implied I was lying. Lots of noise by the pool; construction, dogs etc. Beautiful house, good food, but absolutely need training to meet international standards for the top room prices. To this day they have never offered any compensation. I complained to the council that they should not ever have gotten a 5-star rating; 3-stars at most, but got no reply. Feel scammed; seems like they can make up their own rules!

~~~ Dark red stains! An exterminator! Demands for silence! ~~~ Plus, a surprisingly hostile owner who verbally attacked my own mother. Our experience was in line with others like Hannah, Miall, Amy, Peter, Julia, Adrien, and RL Rosen, demonstrating a pattern of inexplicable aggressiveness. Read on for the full story! ~~~ The Shorter Version ~~~ Checking for bed bugs we spotted disgusting stained mattresses. Dark red spots all over. Casa Mae staff said it looked like it could be bed bugs. Our friend in another room had a clean mattress. They moved us to a new room with another clean mattress. In the morning an exterminator showed up at the hotel. He said everything was fine and then left a five star review for the place on Google (lol). Then the owner told us the stains were all natural. We reached out to the mattress manufacturer and they were unable to provide any other examples of this. Owner got upset with us for checking the mattress and called my mother various names including crazy. When I asked a couple of other guests if their mattresses were also stained, she called the police. She’s now demanded we remove our reviews and threatened us. We will not be silenced by bullies. ~~~ The Longer Version ~~~ Yes, this hotel is lovely, at first glance. Stylish. The sort of spot you might consider for a honeymoon. We were already planning future stays when we decided to do the most sensible thing you can do while traveling: check for bed bugs. Probably fine, right? It’s a five star hotel, after all. Well… Both beds in our room were seemingly stained with blood; a telltale sign of bed bugs. Yikes. We didn’t see any bed bug nests (Phew!). But it’s disconcerting to sleep on stained beds (photo attached). We headed downstairs to the front desk. The staff member who came up appeared concerned and tried to be helpful. She said her work experience included time at a hostel and was, therefore, accustomed to identifying this issue. According to her, it did look like bed bugs could have been there. Since they fumigate once per month, allegedly, it seemed likely that the bugs were, hopefully, gone. She checked the mattresses and didn’t see any actual bugs or nests, and agreed to move us into a new room. The last thing she told us after moving, is that the manager would like to speak with us in the morning. We checked the new room, to be safe. The mattress was perfectly clean. The next morning, we’re not covered with welts, thank heavens. An exterminator is in the lobby. The staff at the front desk confirms our availability to speak with the owner of the hotel, Veronique Polaert, a French ex-banker. Take a moment to ponder what you would do in the position of this person. Perhaps apologize profusely? Offer to not charge us for the previous night? Send us a spa treatment to make up for the scare? Hold that thought. Instead, Veronique is outraged. She claims it’s not bed bugs and waves a weird letter in front of us (photo attached) from the manufacturer of the bed, Coco-Mat, saying that the mattress naturally looks like it’s stained. This, Coco-Mat says, can be due to proximity to moisture. Interesting. <side note: I reached out to various Coco-Mat departments a few different times. One team told me that this stain is “not common” and they could “not tell me why it had happened”. Another team merely confirmed the letter’s authenticity but was unable to provide any other instances or examples of this stain on their products.> Why isn’t every Casa Mae Coco-Mat bed like this? And why is the staff unfamiliar with this characteristic? They didn’t mention this supposed quality when evaluating the stained mattress. Why was an exterminator there in the morning, if this is a normal quality for their mattresses? Veronique insists guests like the mattresses and have for five years. Of course, our objection isn’t to the quality of the mattress. Rather, it’s the fact that they are seemingly stained with blood and appear to have a history of bed bugs according to someone on Casa Mae’s own staff. Moreover, Veronique was appalled that the staff had phoned her late in the evening. It was around 9:00 PM. Note, we never asked the staff to make the call. Clearly, the staff member who made the call wasn’t aware that dark red stains were customary in their mattresses and was alarmed by what she saw. Now our original room had two beds. When we asked to be placed in another room, the staff said the only room available had a single bed. There were, apparently, no other beds available for us. Not even a cot for an adult. Talk about unprepared. We requested an additional blanket and pillow in order to sleep on the floor. The reason: we were a mother and son traveling together and didn’t feel it was appropriate to sleep together. So one of us slept on the floor. Veronique was livid about this fact too. Not because she felt badly for the inconvenience. She didn’t like our decision to not share the bed. And then Veronique turned to me and called my mother crazy and insulted her further, to which I started trembling with emotion. Vile attacks against my own family. Truly disgusting. She said we could leave the hotel if we weren’t happy. After being yelled at, and called an arsenal of names, we thought that was a good idea and began packing. Even if there aren’t active bed bug infestations, evidence of such, plus being berated by a miserable hotelier is enough cause for me. In the lobby, I asked a couple other guests if their beds also had dark stains, which prompted Veronique to dial the police. In one of her responses she claimed I shouted at the guests; that is inaccurate. I did raise my voice when she attacked my mother and the other guests did hear that because I spoke loudly to this deeply aggressive woman. Let’s be clear: there had been no physical contact, no threats of any violence, and no arrests were made. The police did not even bother to speak with us. Phoning the police was a transparent tactic to intimidate guests who have already endured an awful bed bug scare. When I think back, I realize that calling the police is a pretty smart framing device to try to turn us victims into villains. Which is why I write this review – to lay out the facts, to provide the evidence, and to let you decide. In years of global travel, we’ve never encountered such absurd treatment in the world of hospitality. The owner of Casa Mae was so openly hostile, nasty and unprofessional to paying guests that we were incredibly surprised. And yes, we were still made to pay for the €338 per night room. ~~~ Epilogue ~~~ Someone else traveling with us posted a review about our experience, prompting Casa Mae to reach out demanding deletion or they would file a defamation claim. Defamation, of course, doesn’t apply to this case since we are providing factual statements. This has prompted me to wonder how many others have been effectively silenced by Casa Mae’s chilling decrees. It’s unfortunate they chose to attempt to strongarm us into censorship. We’re not easily intimidated, and want the entire world to know how Casa Mae treats guests. During that threat, they also provided us with a statement from an exterminator who said “there was no movement of bed bugs.” Cool. The statement also said “we would like to clarify that the marks of bedbugs are usually very small and black, not winecolored or brownish, like the ones of the mattress cover.” We asked a professional exterminator for his expert opinion on this matter, and he said the following: “The photos you sent me do appear to have blood stains on the mattresses perhaps they were washed out a little bit but that’s what it looks like which would probably indicate a chance of bedbugs… The humidity thing doesn’t make any sense to me..” It’s a bit concerning that their own exterminator is not particularly familiar with the variety of bed bug stains. Feel free to confirm this with a quick Google search; bed bug stains can look exactly like the ones depicted. That’s why the manager who helped us initially was concerned. What’s worse – a couple days after visiting, the exterminator, Rafael Parreira, of Controlo de Pragas - Sobcontrolo Lagos, posted his own review of Casa Mae (photo attached). Why is an exterminator writing a review of a hotel that he services? What sort of arrangement is going on here? It really calls into question the integrity of Casa Mae, and the authenticity of all of these reviews.
Splendid. After a recent 3 week tour of Portugal, I can say that this was my favorite hotel. Absolutely recommend. The attention to detail and design is brilliant. A la carte breakfast on the patio was lovely. Room immaculate & bed so comfortable. The staff was incredible. Particular thanks to Miguel, whose assistance was invaluable. The farm to table gardens are soul soothing, as are the views of the ancient wall, the sea in the distance, the red tiled roofs - all of it. There was a booking error that was entirely my fault & the hotel could not have been more gracious and accommodating. And Lagos was one of our favorite places.
I just left casa Mae and I am writing this review because of honestly how disappointed I was with our stay. They say this is a 5 star hotel, and unfortunately it is more like a 3 star hotel. The majority of the staff was very unfriendly. Only 2 girls who worked in the restaurant were friendly, and some of the front desk staff. We stayed for 3 nights and our hotel room was cleaned 1 time and I only because we had to beg them to clean it by 4pm the 2nd day. There were mosquitos in our room, the bed was extremely low to the floor, the garbage cans were tiny which led us to leaving garbage all over our room. Also the hotel room is more about looking cute than actually functioning as a hotel room. Would have been fine, had I not thought I was staying at a 5 star hotel.
Everything was lovely, the room, grounds, food, and especially the people. I did read both the glowing reviews and the critical reviews online, and was worried about what our experience would be like, but everything was perfect for us. I think some of the critical reviews came during a more difficult period during the pandemic, so I imagine the hotel was dealing with some pandemic related challenges like anyone else. Was established in 2016, so maybe a relatively new hotel that was still realizing its potential. I know things can always be better, but perhaps that potential has now been realized? The room: We stayed in Cabana Este...I don't want to say too much because I would want this room to be available when we go back :) Food: Some reviewers commented about food lacking flavor, salt. I agree that some foods did benefit from adding salt, according to my taste, but they always brought out some salt for us without asking for it, so that we can add to taste, which I much prefer than coming from the kitchen oversalted. So this was not a problem for us. Service: A lot of the critical reviews seem to be regarding service. We did not personally experience any issues. We definitely did not see or experience any rudeness. Everyone was extremely kind. I can see how if you are on a tight schedule, that the service could be seen as too relaxed. Perhaps cultural differences in expectations about the pace of service compared to our hometown or country could be a factor also.
We loved staying at this stylish and friendly hotel as a family party of three, including a wheelchair user. The main building and garden are fully accessible. Staff helpful and enthusiastic. The restaurant uses produce grown on site and otherwise from the region. We would thoroughly recommend it.
