My extended family and I stayed in two townhouses in August last. Properties were nice and clean with plenty of space. On check in we were advised that there was a what's app contact number for any issues that we needed resolved and also that the houses would only be cleaned every three days. This was acceptable but what was not acceptable was that no fresh towels or toiletries including toilet roll would not be delivered when requested. Only one request during the whole stay was dealt with despite several what's app messages. There is No point in having this service if requests are ignored. The houses were cleaned on day three and day six which did not make any sense as we were leaving the following morning. Staff in dining area were very helpful and the food, while not five star, was nice. All in all we enjoyed the holiday and hope that if we return some of the aforementioned issues. will have been resolved.

We've just returned from our half term break in Carvoeiro where we stayed at that the Monte Santo Hotel. We stayed in a 2 bed luxury suite which was extremely spacious, clean, and well equipped. The apartment also had 3 TVs with all UK, German, and Irish stations. Our room was serviced by housekeeping daily who did a good job. The facilities of the hotel are very good with a large outdoor pool, heated indoor pool, tennis courts, small playground, and indoor bar and restaurant which includes a TV showing sports and pool table. For a 5 star I think the hotel is missing an opportunity in creating a better atmosphere, there's no entertainment or music etc in the evenings, it's all very quiet. There are also minor inefficiencies that could easily be rectified. For example, there were often no pool towels or member of staff in the pool house until late morning, everytine we needed to talk to a member of staff we would have to walk to reception and then she would call another member of staff to help us, this was the same when we booked the tennis court. Whilst there are staff inefficiencies and short staffed in certain parts, those that are working were very friendly. The location of the hotel is good but probably not suitable for elderly people unless you rely on taxis or rent a car. It's a 25 minute walk to Carvoeiro town, mainly downhill but the return journey is tough so will need a taxi which is only 6 euros. My main complaint for this hotel are the additional charges, its a 5 star hotel which is expensive to stay, so I believe some basic things should be included. There was a Nespresso machine in our room with 3 pods which were replaced daily, we didn't realise that these were charged at 1.50 per pod, therefore we incurred an additional charge of 4.50 per day for our stay. There were also a large number of other items left in our fridge and on the kitchen unit which were all chargeable so we removed all items and put them in the cupboard. I feel basic items such as water, coffee, tea should be provided for free. Separately, in the hotel website pool pictures there are beautiful double beds which look lovely, when we arrived and viewed the pool all of these beds had no cushions on and looked ugly as it was just bare slats, I thought this was odd but a few days later I saw all the cushions around the corner near the pool house, I was then informed that you had to hire the cushions for 12 euros per day. Another guest told me he had been there for 2 weeks and not one person had rented the cushions, and then we also stayed for 2 weeks and didn't see anyone rent cushions. Therefore, these beds are just left empty. I'm not sure why a 5 star hotel would try and charge 12 euro for pool cushions, surely the negative feedback and complaints outweigh any small profit they might make on these? Overall a good hotel but some small improvements needed.

We were quite disappointed with our stay at Monte Santo. I have been going to Carvoeiro for years and used to stay at Pestana (Gramacho) so we chose Monte Santo as it’s up in that direction but a little closer to the town. The resort has all the makings of a five star but just doesn’t measure up in many areas. 1 - Our first impression when we arrived really set the tone. Firstly, when you arrive by car, there is a barrier which you have to press a bell to call staff to open. Almost every time we arrived back by car/ taxi it took about 5-10mins for someone to realise we were there and open the gate. I would suggest that a permanent security guard be positioned at the gate to actually let guests in and out more efficiently. Also upon arrival the check in area felt more like an upstairs landing in a house and we felt a bit lost, I would recommend a more clearly signposted and better laid-out reception area 2 - I understand with the pandemic the hospitality sector has suffered, but the staff need to be better trained in customer service. At check-in we did not feel very welcome. For comparison, when we checked in at our second hotel in Albufeira, the gentleman at reception was incredibly friendly, and gave us every single piece of information we needed without even having to be asked. Perhaps some of the staff are new but additional training in customer service would go a long way 3 - We had recurrent issues with the air conditioning not working in our apartment, whereby it would switch off randomly during the day/ night and I had to get up many times in the middle of the night to reset the electricity at the mains (which is what the staff member who came to ‘fix it’ did). The issue was never properly resolved over the five days we stayed there and when we complained about this at check out and subsequently via email to the manager, nothing was done; no apology, compensation or follow-up despite it really affecting our enjoyment of the trip 4 - The restaurant/ pool bar staff were pleasant but again, not properly trained. Very slow service, difficult to get someone’s attention and we were told the incorrect information about happy hour and charged full price for drinks we thought would be half price (bottled beers are not included, despite being told all beer was included, a minor point but irritating nonetheless) 5 - The apartments are quite spread out across the grounds and it is definitely more of a resort than a hotel, which to be fair is in the title, but I guess we didn’t expect this so just a heads up for anyone staying here that it’s not a compact resort 6 - The apartments were overall nice with very nice toiletries, but some shabby elements such as water damage at the bottom of the doors and didn’t give the ‘five star feel’ 7 - The walk to the town is a good 20 minutes (and we are quite fit) down hilly dusty roads without proper footpaths. The walk back up from the town is very steep and dark at night, would be much easier and safer to get an Uber. In future we would probably stay closer to the town. 8 - No atmosphere in the restaurant or pool bar area. We thought we would eat at the resort some of the nights but the food was very expensive and also the fact that the atmosphere was lacking we ended up eating down in the town every night 9 - Breakfast not included as standard (despite being a very expensive place to stay) and would have cost €15 a head if we wanted it. We thought this was outrageous! If you have booked here, make sure to check if you have breakfast included or not as there is nowhere nearby to get it. You would have to stock up on groceries and have breakfast in the room every day which we ended up doing. Admittedly this was our mistake but I (stupidly) presumed breakfast would be included considering the nightly rate, so just check your booking 10 - Would highly recommend anyone staying here rent a car as it is just that bit further away from everything and if we had a car it would have made things a lot more easier (assuming they sort out the gate issue!) On a positive note, I felt the grounds are absolutely beautiful with lovely flowers, well manicured grass and a very clean pool area. The pond with turtles and fish and the love lock bridge really enthralled us. The indoor pool and sauna steam room are very nice although indoor pool was usually full of kids playing. If some adjustments were made as suggested above I would consider staying here again.

We stayed here for two nights In September in a two bedroom townhouse. The accommodation was lovely. It had everything we need. A lovely open plan kitchen and lounge on the ground floor with doors out onto the terrace and the shared pool with the other houses in our section. Upstairs was 2 bedrooms and lovely bathrooms. The reason for 4 stars was all the hotel grounds needed a bit of maintenance ie painting the walls, pulling weeds out of paving and walkways and the grass looked like it hadn't been cut for weeks. For a five star property I would expect this all to be regular maintained and well looked after. One other thing was there was not a pool bar operating when we visited. This is not ideal when you had to walk through the restraunt to get a drink with wet clothes. Also we could not get pool towels until 11am which is very odd as people normally go to the pool straight from breakfast about 9-10am. All in all we enjoyed our stay but feel it could be so much better with little improvements.

We visited on 19th August for a much needed family break. We booked a 2 bedroom villa via booking.com. We have visited before but sadly this resort has been badly neglected over the last few years. When you arrive they insist on payment before you have seen your accomodation. Now I know why. The villa was nicely furnished but had lots of maintenance issues and wasnt very clean.Doors on cuboards wouldnt shut. We had dirty glasses and crockery and basics like skirting boards hadnt been cleaned. Lots of woodwork is damaged. The outside table was dirty. Its been neglected sadly I can only attach 10 photos. See below. The staff are disinterested in complaints and some were.quite rude. We were told that they were only cleaning rooms every 3 days due to covid but once I had sent photos of some of the problems they suddenly came every day. They are very short staffed. It took me complaining to booking.com and day 5 of my Holiday before I spoke to the Manager who was quite condescending. She could do with reading 5 star service by Michael Heppell. We had no wifi for 5 days. On holiday with teenagers this was almost the end of the world. They offered to move us on day 5 of a 7 day holiday which was just to late. They did thankfully fix the wifi again on day 5. Sadly I discovered if u book with booking.com and pay the resort you get caught between the two and both pass the buck.
