This was at least the 5th time that we have stayed here and unfortunately the most disappointing to date - I do hope that the management take note of the reviews that have been posted and take action to address the concerns. Things that didn't go well: 1. Arrived around 9.45pm on Sat 1st October - have to say receptionist not very interested in any sort of welcome or providing info. 2. Bed had no mattress cover on it! This is such a basic requirement for hygiene and comfort - when reported to reception, the reply was I will see if this is something we do - not even a sorry. 3. Plugs in both sinks didn't work 4. Shower screens in both bathrooms didn't work 5. Receptionists generally didn't seem interested in helping. 6. Ate in restaurant once, my wife asked for some extra vegetables - this seemed to cause an issue. What was good: 1. Maid service 2. Cake and cava arrived on my birthday 3. Good choice for breakfast. The resort was the busiest I have ever seen it and I wonder if the season has been long and hard for the staff? Please upgrade the accommodation and reemphasize the need for good service to your staff. I stayed in apartment 33 from 1-8 Oct if you want to reply back to me separately.

Plus: space, clean, good service overall Minus: no sea view, just one other restaurant nearby, staff not recognizing voucher from Expedia. If you decide to stay here, I highly recommend a rental car. Outdoor pools are not heated, like most hotels/resorts in Portugal. In beginning of October that means approx 20 degrees in the pool (“freezing”)

We had booked a weeks Holiday half board via travel agent to Monte Santo Resort. We love the algarve and this seems good value for a 5 star resort. After booking, read some reviews and were a little apprehensive. We have just returned after a week there so here are our honest thoughts. Is it 5 star, maybe when it was built but not now for sure. Sad to say that but it’s the truth, so here is why. Our suite, yes that was a good 4 star, great size with 2 double bedrooms and bathrooms. Good TV with selection of uk channels and not a bad kitchen. Bed are excellent, great living space but being picky welcome pack was a bottle of water only and a few Nespresso pods. We had great located in 59 just across from the pool. Only 1 lounger on the patio area. Whirlpool bath didn’t work but didn’t need it. Bits are looking a little tired. House keeping was good. Also you get a washing machine. Pool area, again 4 star. Loads of loungers, not that comfy but on positive is a really spacious area. Charge area for the large wood longer beds which no one seemed to use, but rubbish having to pay extra for these in a 5 star, should be standard. Pool water nice and clean but again bits looking tired. Decking wood and bridges need repair as do some of the tile areas. However, pool cafe closed to upgrade…strange as it looked fine and they had a person sat outside all day. Saw no work being done on this so strange to close in summer. Leisure Facilities….2 star at best. I know that everyone doesn’t was to be sporty all week but the gym is shockingly poor, dated equipment, like well dated, cracked weights, awful cable machine, broken indoor bike… its really poor. Wouldn’t take a big investment to upgrade that area to be at a level expected. Both hot tubs are out of order, really poor as I ready a review from a few weeks back saying the same. Multisport Court again 2 star at best. Very old, tarmac base, extremely worn, not great at all especially when you have 2 teens looking forward to using it. Pool table is only other thing and again that’s very date and worn. Grounds, 3 maybe 4 star. At night looks nice but again it’s just a lack of maintenance around that takes away from the overall 5 star experience. A lot of reviews say this and is a shame the owners aren’t realising this is an issue. Restaurants and bar, 4 star. First night we had buffet, that was really good loads of choice, staff excellent and was excited as we had read mixed reviews. But as the week went on we realised why they have negative reviews. Evening meals are either the menu or a theme night. Piri piri night was a tad poor and the food does become a bit boring, nothing offensive but nothing to say wow, that’s why I’m paying for 5 star. Breakfast was a buffet and had no issues there, that was really nice with lots of choices. Overall, we’ve had a nice week, but it certainly lacks any wow factor. It definitely isn’t 5 star and sadly this is due to it now being dated. If you go you will enjoy it if you’re not too picky, but a lot of the reviews are spot on. Had no issues with staff, all were really nice and friendly especially in bath and restaurant.

We had been to Monte Santo several times over the past few years. This time the experience was completely different. We were a located a room at the far end of the resort and waited 3.5 hours on arrival to get the room key. The reception staff are truly awful, unhelpful and rude. The exception was the gentleman who drove the buggy who could not have been more helpful. When I complained to the manager (Patricia) i was told that she had neve had a complaint about her staff. the standard of maintenance was dreadful. There were three wooden bridges, two at the pool and one on the path up thought the resort. The wooden bridges were in a terrible condition with loose boards and some serious trip hazards. The two bridges over the pool had several pieces of the handrails missing, marked helpfully with cones but never repaired. The path through the resort was completely overgrown and only in our last few days were the overhanging bushes cut back. The footpaths and pavements are full of weeds. We were told that to charge our pool towels it would cost €1.00 or "wash them ourselves" as one of the reception staff helpful added. Hardly the stuff of a 5-star resort. There was no kids club as "they were short of staff" We will certainly never the go back this overpriced, underperforming resort again. There are better options in Carvoeiro, particularly if you have children, who might even value yu as a guest.

The hotel is advertised as 5 star but simple things such as room service are unavailable. They wouldn’t even sell us bottled water from the concierge or reception desks past midnight because the bar had closed. This is acceptable for a four or three star property but not one which advertises as 5 star. On the night we arrived it was after the restaurant had closed meaning we had no food, and no where to get any. They provided no alternative. Again, this isn’t what you’d expect from a five star property. Considering the cost to stay here I’d say you get the same deal at cheaper alternatives in the local area.

This was our family's return to Monte Santo after a 6 year gap- previously we had rated it very highly. However, it is sadly clear to us that standards have dropped noticeably in several departments. The major issue was ants in the apartment, and how the hotel dealt with them and us. They started in the dishwasher(before we'd even had a meal or brought food into the apartment). We reported this, and the cleaners solution was to put the dishwasher on. The ants returned. The next day we found them on our food, we tried keeping the food in the microwave, the ants got in there. So we ended up keeping all food in the fridge. Far worse was discovering several hundred ants marching around our underwear drawer in our bedroom the next day. We reported this to reception via Whatsapp, with video. The cleaners were dispatched again(took an age for them to get there) The ants finally appeared in the ensuite a few days later, all over the glass containing my wife's retainer. At this point we discovered ant killer under the sink, the same one the cleaners were using, so to save an endless cycle of reporting/waiting/ineffective action, we just took care of it ourselves from then on. We have never experienced a problem like this before on our foreign or domestic vacations, but I understand it can happen(once, and then get sorted). What I feel was unacceptable was the hotels lacklustre response- no apology to myself, no real apology to my wife, no offer to move rooms, certainly no gift or token of regret. Beyond the ant issue, there is also a run down feel to certain aspects that certainly do not tie-in with a 5 star resort. The wooden bridges and decking around the pool are falling apart- we watched a caretaker repair three different planks, over 7 days, that had all been faulty(some dangerously) even before we arrived. Each one was a 10min fix, why did it take 7 days? Many of the parasols around the pool are also broken- either the locking mechanism, the arms, or the fabric torn. Finally, the waiting staff. It appears the resort is saving money by employing staff who cannot speak English, and have no service experience. They are only allowed to fetch and carry under the direction of the other staff- you cannot order off them (even if, as in my case, you are prepared to try a bit of very basic restaurant Portugese). The end result is a very unslick, chaotic and slow delivery. They all seem like nice, genuine people, and I wish them well, but 5 star service it isn't. You are not getting what you paid for. So glad we ate out every night but one(by the way, the food at the resort was quality, no complaints there). There were also exercise classes cancelled at last minute, "everyday" foam parties that I believe happened once in a week?(didn't bother our family, but the younger children seemed to look forward to them). Overall, I feel that this resort is on the slide, and the staff are fire-fighting in a cost-saving scenario(see previous reviews about the pool towels, very unusual). I now await a generic "thankyou for your feedback" reply from the hotel, which will confirm my suspicions that they are similarly disenchanted.

Ok so let me start with a major negative that really bothers me, but might not worry others. When I go on holiday I expect to be able to relax, never more so than when eating. Well you won’t be having a leisurely meal here, the waiters table etiquette is awful. They are permanently hovering within arms length on the table, if you are one of only a few groups of diners, you may attach several of these vultures. Leave anything too long, put down your cutlery, don’t finish your bread quick enough, they will take it. On 3 occasions I had to put my hand on a plate to stop it being cleared, if they did ask, they would ask as they grabbed it. I expect plates cleared after a course for the whole table not whisked away as soon as you pause. Also if I ask for water and ask a waiter to leave the bottle pouring to me, then I don’t want them forcefully pouring water for the whole table. Again on one occasion I had to take the bottle from the waiter and stick it under my arm so he didn’t come back again. At this point he had made 3 attempts that I foiled to pour water for people who didn’t want it….fine if it’s free but at 4.50 a bottle I’m not wasting it. Please someone teach the staff to be attentive not invasive, remain out of sight not gurning and staring at the diners. Otherwise food, pool, and the fabulous 2 storey houses are brilliant. Independent air con throughout and the site was always quiet. Cleaners were superb, amenities fine…..I had seen complaints about WiFi but we had no issues. Perfect for our family myself, wife, 15yr old daughter and her friend. 12 min walk to town, 16 mins back. Town is family friendly but all the beaches are very small. Another note, they advertise tennis, and you can play, but 2 of the 4 balls were punctured and the racquets were a bit tatty. Surely a resort like this could invest a few Euros in some new racquets and a few tubes of balls. So I would stay again but I’ll be taking a long pointy stick to keep the waiting vultures at bay.

This is the second time we have come to this resort and it never disappoints us as a family of 5 with young children. The town house is immaculate, the staff are lovely the pool’s are fabulous. I would highly recommend the town houses everything you need for a family. The resort itself has an excellent position especially if you have a car. Carveiro, Portimao and Lagoa all less than a 10 minute drive away. We were so happy to be back after 5 years that we have already booked for this coming October. Thank you Monte Santo Resort.

The resort was not 5 star. For a 5 star I was expecting better. One thing that was really disappointing was the pool towel policy. (I have not expericened such a policy ANY where else in the world) You have to pay a 25.00 Euro deposit per towel and if you want to change for fresh towel there is a charge of 1.00 Euro every time you change. I was told about the deposit when checking but not the one Euor charge. And another thing you have to do this when checking in where the pool towels are kept and also when you want fresh towels you have to go back to check in as there is no attendant around the pool area. The wifi was not good. The house keepers were good but they did not have enough fresh towels to replace, had to call everyday for more towels to be left. Did not eat at the restaurant as another guest said it was no good.

I normally don't do this but in the case of Monte Santo Resort I felt I had to as I do not believe this resort is suitable for young families. Firstly I travelled with my wife and 4 children the youngest being 1. We were housed in the furthest townhouse from the main complex and the roads and footpaths were entirely cobble-locked which made for a rough ride for the baby. On checking in we were told we had to pay €25 for each pool towel and that we would have to pay €1 at reception for each towel we wished to change...not exactly 5-star treatment. The hotel was understaffed however I did find the staff to be pleasant and helpful so I can't fault them. The so called kids club was to put it politely a joke. It could only accommodate 6 children and if you didn't book 24 hours in advance your kids could not attend. The activities were poor and facilities just as bad. There was a movie every afternoon....this was a vacant apartment in the hotel with a TV, needless to say my children didn't attend. The Hotel is a 15-20 minute walk from the main beach and longer coming back as it is extremely hilly and for this reason I would not advise this location for people with mobility issues. Overall I would not recommend this hotel to guests with young families and I will not be returning any time soon. On a positive note the staff were very helpful and the Townhouses were clean and well presented.
