We have just returned from a 12 night stay at the Epic Sana Hotel & Spa. It is a multi national hotel chain, which is high on style and design and could, to be honest, be anywhere in the world, and not the place if you are looking for local, traditional Portuguese charm. However, what you do get is first class, 5* service from the moment you arrive - without exception the staff go out of their way to make you stay as best as it can be - from the car valets, reception, bar, restaurant and house keeping. We opted for a sea view room and following recommendations on Trip Adviser, we asked for a room of the 4th floor - and were not disappointed. A large spacious room with a vast bathroom with tub and shower. The sheets and pillows felt like silk and lovely soft towels, both changed daily without asking. The room was kept spotlessly clean, the minibar restocked with bottled water FOC everyday, and a night time turned down service with chocolates. A plentiful supply of Nesprsso coffee pods was also appreciated. The hotel rooms are situated in two storey buildings around the spacious site, with immaculate and beautifully kept gardens, giving a feeling of spaciousness. It may seem cliché, but the staff across all areas worked so well as a team, and this is what made the difference. Everyone greeted us with a smile, and nothing was too much trouble. We stayed on a half board basis, and enjoyed the food of Abyed Restaurant every night so much, we never ventured to the other 3 restaurants on site. The food for breakfast and dinner is buffet style, beautifully presented and freshly prepared, and serve by staff because of the COVID restrictions. Everyone had their temperature checked in the morning, asked to use hand sanitizer when entering the restaurant and wear a mask when not sitting at the tables. The swimming pool areas were spotlessly cleaned and managed by the team of pool attendants, providing a never ending supply of towels and sprayed down sun loungers after each use. The pools were clean and not too cold, and there were plenty of sun loungers, although I understand the number had been reduced to allow for social distancing. Yes the pool attendants will remove towels left on sunbeds for any longer than half an hour but everybody was happy with that and it worked well. The beach is a public beach in front of the hotel, accessed through a gate from the hotel grounds and down a wooden walk way. There are sunbeds and parasols which can be hire for a daily charge from the public beach attendant. A special mention for Joanne on reception, and Alina in the restaurant 10/10 for their customer service - and all the car valets lads who parked our car, and brought it to the front entrance in the morning with fresh chilled bottles of water sitting in the bottle holders. It was this, and all the other small touches that made our stay at this hotel so memorable. We are so impressed we hoping to stay at one of the Epic Sana hotels in Lisbon next year.

Had an amazing week at this hotel. The service and staff are wonderful they can’t do enough for you (Sara at the Japanese restaurant and pool side restaurant is beyond amazing). Extremely happy with the cleanliness and COVID precautions this hotel are taking. Witnessed pool side loungers being sprayed with sanitiser at the beginning, upon people leaving and at the end of the day. All tables and chairs were also wiped down after vacation. Went to all the restaurants particularly loved Al Quimia and Uddo.

An Epic holiday! This hotel is 5* and as regular travellers we were not disappointed. We stayed for 6 nights at the end of August to the start of September and had an ocean view room on the 4th floor in the main block with a fabulous view across the resort and to the sea. The hotel was spotless, the staff were excellent and the covid protocols made us feel completely comfortable. The pools were great, with plenty of beds (albeit the hotel was not full) and a very conscientious team. The lovely beach is only a 5 minute walk (the stairs down are extremely solid and well maintained!) and although was very busy, given all beaches in Portugal are public, there is plenty of room to find a spot under the very colourful cliffs. Although half board was buffet for both meals, the food was excellent, varied, fresh and plentiful. This is a great hotel for a quiet and relaxing wind-down, my only suggestion would be for them to add a couple more activities to break up the sunbathing, maybe a table tennis table and some outdoor exercise classes - there's plenty of space!

Having stayed at over 50 5 star hotels worldwide I know value. Do NOT be fooled by the stellar reviews. ( as I did) This hotel is filled with beach pictures on its website. However, there are no chairs for hotel guests. In fact the beach is public & everyone can use it. It is also extremely small. It is so overcrowded with locals that during my time here I wasn’t able to use it once. It is also located 2 miles from the hotel & to get there you need to go down stairs made of wood. ( that clearly do not meet safety guidelines. Go at you’re own risk.) The pools are an utter joke. They are so small that can barely fit 20-30 guests in each. ( except this hotel has the capacity for 1000) Needless to say the chances of you finding a pool chair at peak hours are slim to none. The pool is so overcrowded with screaming kids I did not use it once. I ended up staying inside the room with furniture that had its better days and repulsive carpet. ( that wouldn’t be used in 1 star hotels in the US) Ironically, this hotel is priced at 500 USD per night. In Dubai or the Caribbean a hotel at that price range gets you a private beach with upscale state of the art pools & rooms… In Algarve it gets you a public beach anyone can use that is overcrowded with locals. ( You cannot use) Pools made for 30 people with hundreds of people there & rooms of a 1 star hotel quality in the US… With so many locations that cater to the luxury market Epic Sana & Algarve in general do no meet the criteria of a 1 star hotel in the Caribbean or Dubai. Let alone charge 500 per night & get the treatment a 1 star hotel. My travel advice is DO NOT come to Algarve…If you come here after reading my review than you deserve what is coming…

Dear TravelExpert010 We would like to thank you for choosing EPIC SANA Algarve Hotel for your stay. On behalf of the entire team please note that we are truly saddened to read that your experience with us was not enjoyable as you expected. Please note August is a period with a huge demand in Algarve, however ,if you allow us, we would like to clarify that the maximum capacity of our hotel is 400 people and the total area of our resort is 8 hectares, and is including 7 swimming pools. In fact, there is direct access to the beach, but in Portugal all beaches are public areas, although there are some areas on the beaches that are under concession. Being said that, we truly regret not having filled your expectations once our team can guarantee you that we always put an extra effort to provide to our valued guests a wonderful stay and a service with high standards. We would be pleased to welcome you back in the future and have the opportunity to provide you a pleasant experience. Kind regards, EPIC SANA ALGARVE

We have just returned from a 7-night break at Epic Sana, which was our first visit. Our time at the hotel was memorable and the stay exceeded our expectations. We had previously stayed at the Lake Resort in Vilamoura and the Conrad Algarve, so we had a good frame of reference for what to expect from hotels in the area. We had a garden view room on the 4th floor, which was very good (there probably is no benefit in booking a sea view room as the hotel is set back a little from the sea and is obscured by trees). The retractable panels at the bathroom make the room look very spacious. Covid measures are fairly well considered with temperature checks each morning before breakfast, staff serving you your food choices at breakfast and dinner buffets (as opposed to self-service), and similar measures. The staff are courteous and professional but not obtrusive, and the pool attendants are very willing to help and convey the impression that nothing is too much trouble. The decking around the pool is a very good surface and well maintained. We had a hired car with us and parking is free. The hotel is a slight challenge to find on first arrival as there is no obvious main road to it, but we got used to this and it wasn't a problem after our first few excursions off the A22 motorway. We ate in Lima (2 nights) and the buffet (2 nights) which were both very good but didn't get to Al Quimia. One big plus in terms of food is the fact that you can eat from a reasonably priced casual menu at the Open Deck (by the pool) and from the same menu at Bluum bar in the evening, so for example we had a great burger and fries at 10pm one night with our drinks. It is difficult to find negatives really; the fact that you can smoke by the pool was unexpected for a 5 star hotel as other comparable hotels have designated no smoking areas by the pool, or better still do not allow smoking around the pool. A second negative is the fact that our room was not serviced on a few days by 4pm (the time we came up from the pool). The evening turndown service also started around 6pm so on certain days where was only an hour or two between both services, which was unusual. This didn't put us out much however as we just asked the cleaner for extra towels and water, but it was just something that we noted. The Algarve in August can be windy and this took the edge off the high temperatures (a little too much on one day!). We barely saw a cloud during our entire stay however. Overall, the positives greatly outweighed the negatives. There is a well-stocked small supermarket across from the hotel entrance, and also a few restaurants (we didn't try these but heard the pizzeria was very good). Access to the beach was via a wooden stairway, which was lit at night and was lovely for a stroll at dusk. There is much to recommend Epic Sana and we fully intend to return, which is a good indicator of our satisfaction with our stay.
